No one "invents" a style of music. They always layer onto those who came b4.

Just like Litle Richard did...just like Mozart did.....etc.

With that said--there's no other showman like Prince.

Better songwriters? Lennon/McCartney and Hendrix, HANDS DOWN.

I haven't come across anyone more talented than Prince as of yet.....but then again, to me no one can compare to Prince in any way, shape, or form!!!!

Zappa - admittedly was extremely talented - but not as versatile as prince. Prince can do all styles - ballads , funk , jazz , etc. etc.

Now I think Van Morrison - comes close though he's not as dynamic a presence on stage -

Kate Bush - can dance - write beautiful lyrics - sing in such a unique style from her soul - and inspire -

I would say Kate Bush is on par with prince though - can't really think of any artist I would say who is more talented . . .

i don't think there are alot of people up there in the same ranks as prince, but i do think jimi hendrix, glenn miller orch. were amazing....and alot of brazilian music is awesome. that countries music is very unique and talented, i don't think people realize in the USA how many american artists are inspired by brazilian music. alot of friends hate music from brazil, they say it's strange sounding, and hard to get used to....but i differ.

This is a joke,right!!!Cause there is no point to this discussion. Now if Prince was doing artwork who would he be?The point is moot.Are we or are we not on a Prince fansite??? It is bad enough we have comparisions to other artist but who is more talented? Come on we all know the answer to this.Someone already answered this so let's leave it at that and if you don't know then reread all the posts.

If i thought there were anyone else, i'd be on THEIR website. i dont have time for multiple artists. prince offers lots of variety so i really dont listen to much else lately, although i like other artists. but i like princes stuff better. it's hard to outdo him.

will also vote 4 God.. and he made Prince soo funky

Seriously, I can understand the comments on here that suggest that this is a moot question - how do you measure talent?

Maybe a more accurate question would have been, as accomplishments and abilities go, who are Prince's contemporaries and who, if anyone, is "on the next level"?

The beatles were 4 guys, prince is one, one vs four, that should tell you something, it takes 4 to compete with him.
Miles Davis was the bomb, bootsey collins, roger troutman all were great, when the beatles split, what did they do as individuals, when bootsey left George Clinton what did he do as an individual, produce for delite! Roger had 2 good albums, that is it. and the albums had 6 tracks on them. Sly stone was so High all the time, he couldn't perform in concerts, Larry Graham had one good album, and the one that Got him a Number 1 hit was a balad. Frank Zappa was talented but no Prince. YOu all list talented in a instrument, but we are not talking about an instrument, we are talking about instruments, s, s, s, s, s, s, s, s. Song writing, producing,performing etc. Barbara Streisand, Get real, Great Voice but no Prince, MJ great guy, but no prince. I don't care who you try and come up with, none can compete with Prince. Terance Trent Darby is talanted, but come on, 3 albums and 2 hits, (no Prince) Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, You ever hear them sing? Prince is not the best
in every catergory, but as a complete Package. Well he is the complete Package. I really do think thank some of you are Jealous, that some one can be so good at just about everything and he does it his way. This Community is called Prince.Org for a reason. Not Tina Marie .org, or Frank Zappa .org etc.

Who is more talented than Prince? It depends on how you want to measure talent. There are many musicians who can play all the instruments on their lps if they so choose. Bootsy Collins is one. As for as influencial that is up for debate cause Prince is kind of a combination of many styles Beatles, P-Funk, JB's, Sly, Hendrix, Little Richard etc. It remains to be seen cause Prince is still kickin'! D'Angelo may be the next in line to his throne or maybe some legend like Santana will produce another giant record...Spanish influenced r&b.

I still can't believe how so many of you remain so ignorant and disrespectful towards the greats of music history. if you wanna take the chance, read what I wrote earlier this thread, I'm tired of repeating myself. but what you guys are doing is hillarious: "this is a prince site, so we argue there's nobody better than prince". It's sad to see that some of you - probably due to your unlimited dedication to Prince's music - limit yourself to only that music. meaning you dont leave room for others, to study others, to find out about others. Prince became who he is because he did just that, because he studied and listened and learned. he wasnt born Prince. If he reads what some of you wrote I am sure he would crack laughing at so much blindness... he would be embarrassed to see his fans are openly declaring himself more of a genius than duke ellington or miles. THATs some silly shit. come on guys, there's so much talent out there that you (and I) dont even know about. in the streets, in the churches, even on record. I have named many of them before. just because you allowed prince to enlighten your limited musical knowledge and you have decided to close the door after he entered doesnt mean the talent is not there.
go and do your homework. then we can talk.
P.S. I am a huge fan of his. But it would be so, so sad if I decided to miss out on others talent by concentrating the world of music on one person.

he is good at cranking out melodies, but there are so many songwriters who are that much stronger. many have been mentioned - off hand i thot of a few others... lauryn hill, hank williams, leonard cohen, tori amos... hey, even garth brooks, i'd say... the dixie chicks, carlene carter...

that sounds a little different from what you have said last. believe me, I am not questioning Prince's genius. I never will. I am questioning people who are so focused on one man and his gifts that they are blind for the others. most of all I am questioning people on the org who are trying to shut up people an posting a critical analysis.

btw ricco, I love your airbrush-work. in your profile you say you spent your whole life painting prince. I would love to see you do somebody else, theres so many impressive faces out there in music...

The point is: there are some artists that put their art in front of business, money and limos. Others dont. Cant you see a difference between Duke Ellington and Britney? It´s all about being a creative force, dedication to the music, etc.
About MJ, I honestly think he is a slave from his producers, unlike Prince. MJ has a good voice, he sings well, and wrote some cool songs in the past. But right now, I dont think he takes his music as seriously as Prince. It seems he is more worried about dancing well (some concerts were lip-synched) and making money than actually sitting down and writing music. It´s my point of view
