Lovesexy -Alternate Trax????? Hi,
First of all I have 2 admit that I only very recently bought a copy of Per Nilsen's book "DMSR". Now, I read the comment of one of his former bandmembers that the final version of the song 'Lovesexy' was quite different from the original. This bandmember said something 2 the effect of: "When I came back 2 the studio and he had remixed the song I thought it sounded awful, he had totally overproduced it". So, was the original more sparse? Like some of the songs on Parade or Sign????? I've also hear talk of an early version of "Positivity".... But what I was wondering, has anyone ever heard these alternate takes? I've got a lot of outtakes and boots but I've never come across anything from Lovesexy.....

there's an early version of positivity which includes the rap from "cindy c". I dont have any other remixes of "lovesexy" on audio, but I have a tv-documentary from summer 88 showing the song being remixed. You can get an idea how the song must have sounded like, and it grooves. its closer to the live-version. I have to admit I find the final cut very powerful though. In the original version of Positivity, the "Cindy C rap" from The Black Album track was included in the ending of the song. In stead of Cindy C the lyrics simply said "...this thing called Positiviy". Apart from that the song is the same as on the actual Lovesexy album. I got it by tape trading back in 88, but I'm sure it's out on several cd bootlegs. [This message was edited Thu Mar 21 1:48:12 PST 2002 by jalokin]

Eric Leeds said in that same book sumthing about The Family album with bass, which got mixed off. Uhm, maybe time for remasters?

I have a test pressing of the 'Lovesexy' album, and as far as I can tell, there are only two differences from the released album. The song "Positivity" includes the same rap that Cat performed on "Cindy C"(it appears right after Prince says "Don't kiss the beast"),and "I Wish U Heaven" is a little longer, with a slight instrumental segment that was deleted from the final version.Other than that,it is the same as the regular album.
Btw,I think it was Eric Leeds who made those comments in the DMSR book. From reading his comments,it's obvious that,at an earlier stage, the 'Lovesexy' album was probably more raw, more "stripped down" than the final version.

I think I've got a Remix of I NO. I know I've defiantly got 1 Lovesexy remix from 'THE WORK part 2' set. It isn't as good as the original and as it fades in I'm not sure if it's complete. The uncut positively is fantastic, I wish it also had the 'don't kiss the beast' bit as well.

If you have The Work Part 2 you definitely have a Remix of I No. The fourth disc also has I Wish U Heaven (alternate earlier version), Positivity (with the 'Cindy C' rap), and an unreleased Alphabet St Remix.ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. Yeah,I heard that Prince was shocked when he found out that Cat didn't really come up with it herself. If I'm not mistaken,Sheila E. didn't write the rap that she performs on "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night",either.

There was an earlier version of Lovesexy (not in circulation) that was a totally different recording from the released version.
Here's what Eric Leeds said about it: "The original version was lighter, bouncier. The second song had a harder edge to it, much more aggressiveness, which I think he felt was more appropriate for the lyrics. Musically, it was a whole different song. The lyrics meant a lot to him. He was able to 'sell' the lyrics better. The message didn't get across because of the lightness of the first song. Personally, I feel the remake was a better piece of music"
