eek Why Prince? Have you heard the shit that's on the radio today? Seriously, the first Prince video I saw was some video with him and some chick. I think it was Nona Gaye. I still haven't been able to find that song. The main lyric has Prince saying, "Pop, Pop, Pop goes the pistol....Bang, Bang, Bang goes the gun." Someone told me it was "LoveSign" but which one and what album? I just thought he was different from the norm and that always draws me into, not just celebrities, but people as well. What's normal is totally over-rated IMO. Most of the new music lacks substance and imagination....plus, the majority of it is just fuckin stupid. The thing that keeps me a fan is that Prince has the ability to say the dirtiest thing and you won't realize it. Like, when he says, "A pocket full of Trojans", how many people caught onto that the first time they heard the song? Plus, Prince is sexy as all hell and I'd love to get into his dirty mind for a couple hours. "You say you want my hips in the air, oh no, Prince I don't care"....whoa, where did that come from? Who said that?

Like I said beofre the radio today is filled with poppy poppers and rappy rappers. I'm sick and tired of it. That's why I want them 2 bring back that 80's station they once had... pout I BLAME MY MOMMY for my interest in Chaka Khan, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince, it was all I ever heard as a child growing up and it is all I ever will hear because my mom is literally stuck in the eighties. And whatever she says, NO she did NOT bring back Hoop Earrings. lol

I will never stop wondering what got me into him as much as I am....
Maybe it's the fact that we're both the same height and I can share that with him...
Or maybe it's the fact that he inspired me 2 take up three musical instruments, I'll never know. But...I'll never stop loving him. biggrin So watch out mommy, U may not be the only one stuck in the 80's..... omfg

I got into him after watching Purple Rain on TV at a friends house. Like rialb, I'm a big Batman fan, and must've watched the movie 1000 times. It was released when I was 4 years old, and even before I had a clue who this guy was, I loved Partyman and Trust.

The next album I bought after Purple Rain was Come, which was one hell of an intro to the weird and wonderful music made by the lil dude, but thankfully it didn't scare me off. biggrin

I kept listening and collecting albums because he's a lot better than the crap that's being spoonfed to people my age. On the other hand, I used to be huge into Backstreet Boys, and in a roundabout kind of way, was introduced to Prince's music because of them. If Kevin hadn't gotten all starry-eyed and fammy whenever P.'s name was mentioned, (and I'm not proud of this) I may never have bothered to watch Purple Rain that first time.

It's interesting how Batman introduced people to Prince...that was a huge move to Prince to do that soundtrack. I guess the timing was perfect. Batman was huge, and Prince just put some B-side (except for Scandolous -LOL) material on the soundtrack and it sold 4 million copies.

That and I think he's purdy. sexy

It's great that kids and young adults are getting into Prince.

I don't know why it surprises me, I liked a lot of stuff from the 60s and 70s and 80s when I was a teenager (in the 90s)

I guess it's a testament to Prince's music that it has longevity.

And U know what else? I wouldn't ever wanna meet him either. Thinking about this for a long time...I don't think he would wanna ever meet me either. I have a serious case of ADHD, and I don't think he would wanna put up with me being all hyper around him. If he thinks he's seen crazy....then he obviously hasn't met me. I'd just be bouncing off the walls. Now, if he acted like that with me, then I wouldn't mind. It's always nice 2 see that somebody can act just as 'retarded' as you. But should I ever meet him, I want him 2 see me for me, not me just acting mature.... wink razz nana

i am 21 now, but i was introduced to Prince at a very early age. i grew up listening to 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day because that is what my sister had. I have my older sister to thank for turning me on to some amazing music.

some of my earliest memories include me, the opening scene in Purple Rain, and a broom for my guitar. i would play that broom for hours!!!

for me, Prince just embodies what music is suppossed to be. he is truly amazing and it just blows my mind that someone can be so gifted.

plain and simple...Prince is just badass!!!

A teenage family friend was a prince obsessive and had everything.. EVERYTHING, I thought this was amazingly cool and let her talk to me about him for a good 3 hours, then I promptly forgot everything she said.

Earlier this year I saw the Musicology special on MTV, I ran out and bought Parade because of 'Sometimes it Snows in April' loved that song but didn't think much of the rest. Then my girlfriend's dad picked up the Purple Rain VHS somewhere and I stole it and I haven't looked back.

I guess it helps that he's a real musician..

I got my first taste of Prince's music when I was about 9 (in '95) when my mom picked up some random casette tapes at a garage sale - one of them being The Hits 1. I swear I listened to that thing from front to back every day for about 2 months. Then, as most kids do, I got sick of it (gasp!) and kinda forgot about him. And for a while I, too, got sucked into the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and Britney scene but when they all started breaking up and putting out crap music (that wasn't up to par with their earlier hits) I kinda got fed up.

It wasn't until my freshman year in high school that I "rediscovered" Prince. I was cleaning our my closet when I came across that same tape, popped it in, and was floored. "How could I have forgotten this guy!" I asked myself as I proceeded to go out and purchase the CD (since the tape was so worn out!) When I got to the store, I discovered The Hits - The B-Sides which opened me up to even more of his music. After having some choice favorites on The B-Sides, I went out and bought the corresponding albums, starting off with Diamonds & Pearls, then Purple Rain, 1999, I found out my brother actually had the Batman soundtrack (score!), SOTT, Controversy, and alot of the 90's stuff (Crystal Ball, Emancipation, Gold, etc.) I've downloaded - but I'm still hoping to one day have a complete Prince album collection! (no matter how much I have to spend on eBay or how many times I have to hunt through CDs at garage sales and used record stores! He's worth it!)

After that, I kinda did what PurpleKnight said - a lot of backtracking and research, reading interviews, discographies, old articles - anything I could get my hands on to find out more about this mystery man! Since he wasn't so prevalent in the late 90s into 2000, its was difficult for me to get a feel for his personalisty...all I had was old stuff and I was getting kinda anxious! But now that Prince is back in the mainstream it's been nice to have him making appearences and doing concerts that I have the opportunity to experience! Now I can see his true personality and no longer have to guess! For a while there, I was kinda getting worried that this time would never come and I would be left in the dark forever, but it has - and I'm living it up to the fullest! Seeing him perform live on this tour TWICE were truly 2 life-changing expierences and really proved to me that Prince is a musical genius who's music can stand the test of time. It's been a great journey so far and I've just recently discovered the bootlegs - so a whole other door has now been opened on top of all the legal music I'm still exploring!

Also, I could go on for days about how georgeous the boy is - I prey every day that I can someday find a guy as good looking, talented, spiritual, and sensual as PRINCE! I think I've finally come to terms with the whole age difference thing and him being married and all...but I can dream, right?

Okay, I could go on forever. Bottom line - the man's a musical genius and his music never goes out of style - he's classic and has put out so much and expiermented and fused together so many different musical generes it's hard to NOT like/respect him. I gave him a chance - and have been/am on an amazing journey that has taught me so much about so many aspects of life. And that's just it - his music is more than just MUSIC - it means something; it has substance! Again, sorry for the length but I don't post often so this makes up for it! smile

...and I totally credit Prince for my sexuality and cockiness! GEMINIS ROCK!
Run fast, jam to Prince, but stay in your lane. Peace.

I think I was about 11 or 12 when Purple Rain came out.

All I thought about was sex. I mean all the time, and I hated the stuff that was on the radio, and I was very sick of MJ.

Then along comes Prince being as dirty and as nasty as he wanted to be, but with musical skill to boot, and a spiritual depth that I thought the other artists lacked. (Of course) at that time Prince was much more tolerant to religous views of other than he is now.

I still remember seeing the Computer Blue/Darlin Nikkie performance--you know the one that suggests fellatio, then sings about masturbation, only to end with him humping the stage and Appolonia running out of the club looking like a two dollar hooker? That scene changed my life. That music changed my life.

I live those years in the outskirts of Birmingham Alabama, and a Half Asian boy in an all white neighborhood (where it was de facto that blacks wheren't allowed) can be very confused sometimes about who he is supposed to be, and who he is supposed to like. Prince came around and said, be any damned person you want to be, and love any damned person you want to love-- He helped me break the color barrier in ways you young cats could never understand.

Although I think he's knocked his head one too many times now in his "Rave Un2 THe Jehova Fantastic" days, I will always be thankful for what he gave me. And it makes me happy that he's still inspiring kids.

He will truly be missed.

I'm 17 now and saw Purple Rain for the first time when I was 13. From that point on, I have been a truly devoted fan. I don't really know why I intially took such a liking to him, but I think the one factor that really did it was how great looking he is.

When I found out that he was a real musician who wrote and produced all of his music I was even more enchanted, because ever since I have listened to music, I have put the true musicans (not the lip-synchers and singers) on something of a pedestal. I thought is was amazing that he could do everything himself and play so many instruments. Yup, I think that's what did it. His obvious talent.....and his rockin' ass.

Like many others, Batman is the album that sealed my fate as being a huge fan of Prince.

I'm 25, so when Batman first came out I was 10. I had heard and seen a few Prince videos on tv like When Doves Cry (with wide eyes) and Raspberry Beret, starting my longtime crush on Wendy-up until Batman I had no real story on him, other than I liked the music and the videos (especially Raspberry Beret) were just fascinating eye candy then.

The thing that changed it all though was Electric Chair. The guitar work is what brought me to Prince and keeps me interested. The musicianship, the craftsmanship, the passion for what he does and staying true to his own voice-no matter what any of us think. It also helped inspire me to pick up a guitar and keep interested, adding Prince's music to my collection and helping me to have wider tastes.

I still remember being a kid blasting Batman on headphones feeling like I knew something other people didn't (my age or not) and that they might get the secret but it's something that was mine. I hadn't heard anything that changed my perspective on what music could and should be-and I still haven't.

I'm still hooked (spending my years on after buying the past albums and trying to keep up with what he puts out) and I name check him as someone when I think of someone true to themselves, willing to take chances, and moved to create when it comes to music.

I feel old now when it comes to the mass music scene. Songwriters are only there to craft the new generic pop hit-no one seems to have their own voice beyond being the latest clone and name-checking an influence that makes said influence cringe when hearing of it. There's always going to be artists that breakthrough the top ten that have something to say-nine inch nails for example-but I wonder how many can really bring that same feeling that I remember from back then. cool

Wow- a question just 4 me. This is Melissa (18 years of age) representing 1985 and the class of 2004. Why not Prince? He's a genius, he's gifted, he's fine, he's sexy, and he's real. Sincerely, I respect him as an artist and a human being, and me being a creative person and lover of music, I really admirer him. I appreciate the old and new Prince, and how he is acknowledging the young fans and lovers of his music. I just "Adore" him!!! heart love2 mushy love cloud9 touched headbang music
