Young Fans - Why Prince?

OK for those of you young enough to NOT remember Purple Rain and Sign of The Times when they where originally released, what draws you to Prince? Which album or performance did it?

Two: My mom liked him and when I was little she used 2 play him in the car all the time.
Three: First song I heard of his was KISS, used 2 sing it all the time.
Four: The album that did it for me was 1999.
Five: But now my favorite album is Controversy.
Six: I can't explain it all. I'm just gonna have 2 start a whole nother thread! evillol
Seven: My friend Rosa likes him 2 but not for all of the forementioned reasons. smile

I happen 2 have a few friends who R into him as well. They play his music at our school dances and everybody digs it. It just comes from growing up with a mother who was hip 2 that era U know?

Good topic. I was thinking about starting a similar thread. I am absolutely amazed to read about so many youngsters that are into Prince. To hear that P has fans in their early teens has me like eek . I mean, as we have heard over and over, the man has had a commericial hit record in over ten years. I too want to know what draws them to P when most their age are into Justin, Britney, Beyonce, Hilary, Christina, Nelly, etc..

I'm 23 and not sure if I am young enough to respond to this or not. I didn't get into Prince until 1996 with the release of Chaos And Disorder. My first exposure came from the Batman movie. I used to be a huge Batman fan and watched the movie quite a bit so I'm sure that some Prince must have seeped into my subconscious. And I always loved the Batdance video. But I didn't become a fan until years later. I guess the thing that made me curious was reading that he did almost everything on his own (writing, producing, recording). I was kind of curious to hear how one guy could do it all and do it so well.

Ugh....Justin and Christina and Brittney!!! I HATE poppy poppers! razz No offense 2 the people who dig them. But poppy poppers and rappy rappers aint my bag. 80's music has sucked me in for good! I stick with the originals! P's music is just really fun and exciting. It keeps our school dances alive

I got into him after watching Purple Rain on TV at a friends house. Like rialb, I'm a big Batman fan, and must've watched the movie 1000 times. It was released when I was 4 years old, and even before I had a clue who this guy was, I loved Partyman and Trust.

The next album I bought after Purple Rain was Come, which was one hell of an intro to the weird and wonderful music made by the lil dude, but thankfully it didn't scare me off. biggrin

I kept listening and collecting albums because he's a lot better than the crap that's being spoonfed to people my age. On the other hand, I used to be huge into Backstreet Boys, and in a roundabout kind of way, was introduced to Prince's music because of them. If Kevin hadn't gotten all starry-eyed and fammy whenever P.'s name was mentioned, (and I'm not proud of this) I may never have bothered to watch Purple Rain that first time.

That and I think he's purdy. sexy

I got into him after seeing a segment about him on VH1 I love the 80's. I was impressed by his resume of women as well as by some clips from purple rain they played. I'm a guitarist and had always been interested in his music but his image had turned me off up until then. I then bought the best of album followed by Purple Rain, SOTT and Parade and they rank up there with my favorite all-time albums like Pet Sounds, Kind of Blue, etc.

I had always heard When Doves Cry, Kiss, Cream and Raspberry Beret on the radio since a youngster and liked theml. One time, out of curiosity, I bought Purple Rain. I didn't particularly like it, other than WDC. Still, I was interested, and went out and bought a second-hand, coverless copy of "Come" on cassette -- the only Prince album I could find. This was back in 2001, when I didn't know what an orgasm was. I loved it -- the title track was slick, I was rocking out to Loose, I loved the smooth chill of Letitgo and the disturbing Papa and so on. Then I bought Parade, never really listened to it, and promptly forgot about him.

Then a couple of years later I met a friend in high school who was just getting into him and had bought The Very Best of Prince. He played "1999" for me and I never looked back.

I'd heard "Purple Rain" and I was drawn to it when I was about 10. This was in the late 90's but it still got some play on a station I used to listen to. About that time, I saw "Purple Rain" and loved it. Then I got into some of the NPG stuff, "Everlasting Now" and more religious based songs. "The Cross" was a great hit for me. Then I heard the studio version of "Joy in Repition" followed by the One Night Alone version. It was then I truely respected Prince's guitar abilities. After his cover of "Red House" and seeing him at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he's one the greatest guitarist of all time, IMO. He plays with so much charism and soul, and sings that way to back it up. Only Page and Plant could combine such vocal and instrumental talent, but Prince is one man. He's just unbelievable. Whenever I overheard someone talking about great guitarist, or great black artist, I always pull out Prince. They usually laugh or scoff, but the I wip out some burned CD I made and blair out "Bambi" or "Calhoun Square" They never new Prince could rock. Then I hit "Joy in Repition" and the arguement is over. Prince just rules.

I was 4 when I first saw Batman (I'm 19), and it's always been my fav movie. So every time I'd play the movie, I'd always love the parts with Prince's songs playing (especially when Partyman would come on in the museum scene).

I always thought Prince was basically just this horny little man who made some great pop songs, but eventually I just started becoming really intrigued by his mystique, and the fact that he didn't do things the way all other artists do.

So I started looking up interviews with him, and he just struck me as this absolutely intriguing, mysterious, rebellious, and well-spoken figure.

Once I started buying his albums, I was hooked.

So why Prince? He's mysterious, he's beautiful, his spirisexuality fascinates me, I've never seen anyone in music so seamlessly talented, and most of all I've never loved this many songs on such a personal level.

When I listen to Prince, I feel like it's not just music, but a surreal magical experience.

Wow...You young fans are really impressive, but I guess we all like P for some reason or another. Although I'm older now, I remember I fell in love with his music when I was 13 and checked out the video for "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?". I thought to myself, what gall (sp?), what spontaneity, what conviction, and oh yeah, the cool ass music and guitar playing.

I just never thought that young persons that are old enough to be my younger nephew and nieces are really into P now. I wish my nephs and nieces were as open minded as you young P fans.

Yes, you all are very impressive indeed. biggrin
