There are so so many great songs by Prince, but the one
that I think is his greatest and the one that means the most to me is If I Was Your Girlfriend "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

Ok here's why...Wasted Kisses is a nicely multi-layered production, lots of sound effects that compliment what amounts to Prince in a RARE bitter mood, mourning the death of something...perhaps his relationship with Mayte (not sure) in an almost sarcastic fashion. He's so good when he's pissed. Fear is the mind-killer.

Many, many, many reasons... Firstly the music. Its funky but its cold funky. It didn't sound like anything back then in 1987 and it still doesn't sound like anything else now. I liked how the lyrics divided people. It's intentionally sexually ambiguous. Yes, its a love song from one person to another person whom has "girlfriends" they are closer to, but you can read it so many ways. It could even be a gay woman talking to another gay woman - which brings me to... The "Camille" voice. I don't know why but I love all the songs with the speeded-up distorted voice. It seems to make the soundscape more cartoonish and less literal. Its like a Hanna-Barbera version of funk. I can't explain it. The fact it was a single. Which other superstar at the time could have released an album-cut like this, as a single? Nobody. Prince was so out there. The stranger he sounded, the more I loved him. Its the most bastardised Prince song - not covered, but bastardised. First there was the response song, "Girlfriend" by Pebbles but other artists have taken this track as their lead inspiration... "Come With You" by Millionaire... "Bonnie & Clyde" by Beyonce and Jay Z. I think it says more for a song that it inspires others as a starting point to create, rather than just cover it ad-verbatim. It's Trip-Hop before the term was even coined. It's a beautiful song. On top of all that, I have the personal stuff that this song means to me.

Irresistable Bitch speaks to the feminist in me. I love the dissonant far-off bell sounds and the underground river mix of sounds and voices bubbling under Prince's spoken lines. I love the mix of beauty and meanness and the soft, lovely "ho, ho, ho, ho" by Wendy and Lisa. All in all, the song captures a complicated mood delicately expressed -- a submissive, hurting, loving, flying, funny, and proud adoration. It's brave, it's free, it's fabulous.
Thieves in the Temple because I like lonely songs. Purple Rain is like God. Too big to grasp. Too magnificent to hold onto. But the loveliest: IF I WAS UR GIRLFRIEND
