It seems like every brother that comes along now and plays Funk or Rock gets compared to Prince.

It's happenned with D'Angelo and Lenny in the past. Now it's happening with artists such as Van Hunt, Amp Fiddler, Tricky, Andre 3000, etc. Basically they're brothers trying to challenge th status quo of Soul, Rock, and Hip-Hop. I don't undrstand that, yo. Why can't people just see the artists for who THEY are, not for how much Prince influence they have in them? It seems like they're only gonna be as good as Prince, but not better. I can speak for myself on this because I'm a brother who plays Funk/Rock/Pop/Whatever. But I don't wanna have critics compare me to Prince. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Prince to death and he'll always be my #1 musical lord and savior. But once I get out there, I wanna be my own artist, not walk in the shadow of someone else or be pigeonholed by other people into that standard.

Am I making sense? confused

I think its because these artists have said that Prince was a huge inspiration to them.

Did you say that these brotha's will only be as good as Prince, not better???

You wrote that sentence??

There have been GREAT musicians in the past, more will come, that have not been
BETTER than Prince...better at a single instrument, debateable, but better as a
Total Musician, well, i'll put my money on Prince everytime.

Secondly, if these Van Hunts, DeAngelos...etc, in 20 yrs were to ultimately be as good
as Prince, well then I'll have missed something, won't I?

Prince, as a musician, entertainer, songwriter, is the mountaintop...
THAT's why the comparisons occur.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Why this happens is because (as it is now becoming apparent to the masses) Prince is a pioneer of popular music much as was James Brown, The BEatles, etc. He joined funk/ sould/ rock/whatever like no other before him had.

many if not most of the artists

u named have bitten more than

a piece of prince's purple rock

if u dig me?

if a musician wants 2 be

their own artist,

they should be more original

influence is great

but straight biting another's style

isn't cool
