I guess it serves me right for actually clicking on this thread.

I read a later interview with Prince where he stated that he just said that at the time to get people to ignore his race and pay attention to his music and to add an air of mystery. (You know, getting them to drink his coffee by serving them some cream with it.) Additionally on the Tavis Smiley show, he hinted/implied that his maternal grandfather might have been something other than black, but that's it. S Filthy cute and baby U know it

I don't think PRINCE lied about his heritage...his mom is a light skinned Black woman, who pretty well could be Italian or come from a mixed heritage of Italian and Black...his dad couldve very well come from a mixed heritage!
Why are ppl so ignorant to think all black ppl are african, but when your 'white', then you got the right to say...oh I'm italian, russian, polish, german or irish!!! Black ppl are the most mixed race in america, and there is well over 80% of the population who are of mixed heritage...but don't know their own heritage, so the ignorance is...'we' just call ourselves black or the so called 'african american' label, which doesn't exactly define 'us' as a ppl, because were not directly from africa, and neither are our parents or grandparents. My mom is a black woman, but she knows her heritage and its not only african, but french and native american...and my dad is latino (mixed heritage also) So learn your heritage ppl!!! And you can look at PRINCE and tell he's not 100% AFRO-AMERICAN! Ppl aren't that light in africa, and they ain't got narrow features like that either...and their rarely that size! Prince is definitely a black man of mixed heritage and we all know it! Thats almost as stupid of making 'Halle Berry and Jasmine Guy' Ignore their mixed heritage to say their BLACK ONLY! and thats just as ignorant!

Northern Africans (light-complexions)....Ethiopians (narrow features)..... Pygmies (small stature). Just so you know Africa is diverse. Africans come many different ways. And yes, I agree, people should learn about their heritage, but ALL of their heritages, not just the non-African ones. (Sorry for the rant, but this is a pet peeve of mine ). Also, "black" and "African" are two different things, and are not to be used interchangibly. Eastern Indians often call themselves black. You can be black and not 100% African-or even African at all. And African-American.... a whole 'nother thing entirely. You shouldn't get so worked up about it. It's not that important. S Filthy cute and baby U know it

Additionally on the Tavis Smiley show, he hinted/implied that his maternal grandfather might have been something other than black, but that's it. S Thanks for mentioning that. I knew P was lying when he was saying that mess over 20 years ago and it left a nasty taste in my mouth about P....so much so that he fell off my radar for over 15 years. Most Black people have some white blood down the line, but if it is so far removed, then what is the purpose of bringing it up..especially if you have absolutely no connection with that part of your lineage. P's mom favored my grandmother, complexion and everything, but she was Black. Her mother was even lighter. They were still Black. My great-grandmother told my grandmother that her father was a very fair man that looked white. My sister is P's complexion with red-hair. So just because someone is light doesn't mean that they are 'mixed.' I would love to see pics of P's Italian family members since, according to him, his grandmother was Italian. Anyone got pics of those Italian cousins, uncles, aunts... All the pics of his family that I have seen are of straight up Black folks. Prince lied about it alright.
The pressure to have anglo-american traits was feverishly pervasive during the 70’s and 80’s. We have to remember that racial segregation was a fact of life for much of the country until just a few years prior to this. Ebony and JET magazine where constantly showing images of black women with white features, relaxed hair, and in social situations that where much more white than black at the time. We where constantly being bombarded by Venessa Williams look-alikes on T.V. and even today, Beonce’ Knowles is given more attention than the equally beautiful Kelly Roland. Why? Prince once pointed that out in Under the Cherry Moon: Chocolate? Or Butterscotch?? The underlying message being that the lighter your skin, the more attractive you’re going to appear to the “whites”. Prince was guilty of this at one time, though I think he started to see the message it was conveying. Try and imagine all of the Prince videos before the Gold Experience. How many black women had prominent roles in Prince videos? Movies? By prominent , I mean, depicted and sexual provocative and intriguing. Nadda that I can think of. To add injury to insult, consider UTCM, where the love interest was not only white, she was VERY white, and you had two black men fighting over her. And the scene where Prince is approached by an older woman looking for him to wine and dine her? Yup, an old, implied, ugly black woman. He screams frightened of her. These messages are subconsciously picked up by people. Thus during the Purple Rain error, Prince was desperately trying to cross over to a white audience and gain international stardom. The formula worked beautifully too. Think of Little Red Corvette—Obviously a white man’s status symbol at the time, with a tune that rivaled Rick Springfield or Bob Seiger on the radio in it’s pop sensibilities, and exceeded them in craftsmanship. Now that Prince doesn’t care about cross over and such, and the musical environment is much more accepting of alternative cultures and points-of-view, Prince no longer needs to please any given audience. And he doesn’t aim to. But back in the 80’s the pressure was extreme.

Their heritage spans many continents and racial backgrounds, and they've mixed with all the races. But aside from that, Prince's parents where both black--not mixed. This has come up before. The simple truth is that Prince lied. I don't understand why people are so upset about it. Prince always lies to the media. Duh! I mean, come on, name change to , his first born son's health, racial identity, the list goes on and on--Prince has had a history of lying to the press. If you want honestly, listen to his music and forget about all those silly interviews.

And he doesn’t aim to. But back in the 80’s the pressure was extreme. I can always count on you to break it down. Kenya Moore, former Miss USA, model and actress, was on the radio a few years ago and during the interview she mentioned that Prince had called her up and said something about her being attractive(can't recall why it was brought up). She said that she was shocked because she didn't fit the type of women(non-Black) that you usually see him with, which was said with hesitation. You could tell that she was trying to be cautious in how she worded her sentence. Here is a picture of Kenya: I totally understood why she was shocked. Kenya is dark and doesn't fit that racially ambiguous look or just straight white, which he has a history of. I have never seen UTCM before and I doubt I ever will.

I don't know or care what Prince is regarding his race or sexual orientation.
As for the people that bitch about the relative lack of black women in his videos and movies, why do you care? Is he supposedly "betraying the race" or some bullshit like that by not featuring black women? No. That "stick to your own kind" mentality smacks of racism. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

The pressure to have anglo-american traits was feverishly pervasive during the 70’s and 80’s. But back in the 80’s the pressure was extreme. Black is Beautiful was the slogan of the early 70's. The natural hair was in. If you went to a Black college almost every one had an afro and so many of the men wore the dishiki shirts, etc. So maybe in the latter half of the 70's things changed with the spirit of '76. As for the 80's... Irony... the Black barbie doll has striaghter hair than a White Barbie...
