The real problem with the new band is it's lost the Mpls sound.. What would the Mpls sound be without the synth horns. Real horns give him the old skool feel, the synth horns are Prince. Everybody copied that sound from Phil Collins "Sussudio" to Van Halen "Jump" Ready for the World, Stevie Nicks and the list goes on. Now Prince is using real horns and sounding like his forefathers, James B, Sly and almost any 70's funk band.
He's also lost the Chic style funk guitar on his new stuff. To me it never gets old. Anyway that's my 2 cents.. I've found that it's not usually the best technically trained musicians that make the best bands. They usually don't have soul. Check out the E Street Band, Rolling Stones, and a host of others. Those guys don't read music but they got it down and they have their own sound. ______________________________________________

"Housequake" used real horns... "Billy Jack Bitch" used real horns... "Slow Love" used real horns... "Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" used real horns... "Alphabet St." used real horns... "Sexy MF" used real horns... The live version of "Rebirth Of The Flesh" used real horns... Are these songs the weak ones of the bunch or something??...

Co-sign. He's still good ol' Prince with or without the synth horns as far as I'm concerned. [This message was edited Sat Jul 17 11:24:47 2004 by PurpleKnight] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

He plays "DMSR" and "Let's Work" and they use the synth horns. You don't get much more MPLS sound than that. Besides if he kept it the same instruments he'd sound like The Time-just the same for the last 20 years. Prince isn't about that. "New Power slide...."

i think the band sounds great. do i think the horn arrangements get a little gratuitous sometimes? well, sure. but not so much that it ruins the shows for me. i think the current NPG is really focused and sharp - there's not a tony m. in the bunch.

One day some people want Prince to pigeonhole himself forever, the next day they want him to do a complete 180. And twice on Sundays the rest want him to be all things to all people. It's good he doesn't pay attention to such burdensome minutia. He couldn't win if he tried. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I agree. What you said is obvious to most people I think. Some people can't seem to grasp it. [This message was edited Sat Jul 17 13:01:44 2004 by ConsciousContact]

No, those songs are not weak, they are bad as Hell. They sounded better than anything else out there at the time but they are not Prince's best.....the "old Prince".....the synth Minneapolis sound. Prince used real horns way back. Offhand, I know he used them on Sign 'O' The Times, but maybe even further back than that. This Minnesota resident would take real horns over synth, any day. I've never associated synth horns with the Minneapolis sound. Luv & Peace, Alex Clubbin' in Mpls/A Night w. Prince [This message was edited Sun Jul 18 1:16:17 2004 by sloopydrew4u]

Prince goes through phases. He said he disliked real horns in 81, but in 84-87 he had a massive horn phase (Family, Parade, SOTT etc).
He's having another phase (2002-200?) .

forgot about the parade era...hell, the live horns go back to at least the pr era. Exactly! P started subbing keys with horns on the PR tour I believe. Sheila's influence was rubbing off and Eddie M and Eric began overtaking the Baby I'm a Star Encores. Before we knew it, ATWIAD had real horns added, Romance 1600, and then The Family, and so on. .

The first time I remember hearing horns was on the "I Would Die 4 U" 12 Inch. That was the beginning of the end of the "Minneapolis Sound" he made so famous. Andy is a four letter word.
