Shortberry Strawcake: how'd he get that guitar sound?

Guitarists out there - help me out... what did Prince do to get that mouthed guitar sound. I don't THINK it was a vocoder (the thing Roger used with his keys, Frampton on his guitar, etc.)

The vocoder is the ONLY thing I can think of that made that sound, but, it sounds like his voice is going through a wah pedal, separate FROM the guitar... but, I got no clue.

Any clues? It's one of my favorite 80's funk instrumentals. (yeah. really, how many WERE there?)

It sounds to me like a talkbox, which is the piece of gear Frampton and Roger used. Prince uses it in a really trippy way on Shortberry Strawcake, where it's subtle at times, and extreme at others.
A vocoder usually doesn't have as strong of a vowel sound as a talk box, and the fact that Larry Graham used to use it makes me think that's what Prince used.

If you never heard it, bro, you DEFINITELY need to check it out... off of Sheila E's first record. One of the best jams on there, along with "Oliver's House"... great funk - along the lines of "A Love Bizarre".

Sorry - I should have cited where the song was from.

GO GET IT. NOW!!!

Oh - shit - you're right. I don't know why I didn't think of that - the solo is definitely reverse... just didn't think of it.

Yes. It is backwards. I've always been intrigued by the song and I tried listening to it backwards to decipher what the lyrics are, but it's not an easy task (most likely purposely). The most I could get was "Last night I had a dream.." and some other stuff. I don't really remember much other than that. I think he says something about God, too.
