Songs that sound like Prince

Songs by other artists that sound like they should've been written by Prince.

I'll start off with some obvious ones:

Waterfall - TLC (is it just me, or does this sound a lot like "Money Don't Matter 2nite")
Slave 4 U - Britney (I said obvious)
Nicotine and Gravy - Beck (plus the rest of the Midnite Vultures album)
Untitled - D'Angelo (obvious, again. And, yes, I know he's an artist in his own right. So's Beck).
"We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"

Wow just downloaded Skin trade the other day. Great song. I also loved Beck's last Prince album, I mean... The one that I really liked this year was Maxwell's "Lifetime" The whole album was pretty good, but that song is a great Prince song. How bout the new George Michael? A bit princish.

Oh one more-

HELLA GOOD by No Doubt. That is the funkiest jam I've heard in quite some time. That distorted synth bass is right off the Time's first album. Check it out. Funky!

TLC reference is very true, I have always thought that. Basement Jaxx- several songs from their "Rooty" album sound like they have sampled Prince but they haven't. THe Mother Funkers (French group from Montpellier) sound a lot like Prince too. Must sleep, very late!

Virtually all of the last Basement Jaxx cd sounded like below parr versions of Prince B sides/ Camille tracks. I was amazed that BVH raved about it!. I hope they paid P big $.

There was just a Savage Garden "10 of the Best" on VH1 and they played TMBGITW and raved about Prince, saying that SOTT is one of the greatest albums ever.

OTOH, I think Savage Garden suck big time! (even tho I'm originally from Oz).

Why do so many artists inspired by Prince sound so crap? (Maybe that should be a new thread title)

"Gimme" (or Give Me) by Jill Scott. The part/background vocal that says :Give it to me baby." It really sounds like Prince.

actually when I first heard that Natural Selection song, I thought it was Prince! That really really really sounds like a P song, man. Actually, more like Camille.

Keisha

Caught Out There by Kelis (not the music, which is obviously the Neptunes, but the lyrics made me think of Prince)

Waterfalls by TLC (I still speculate a lot about this one, like Prince slipped it to them on the sly...)

Chicken Grease by D'Angelo (or 50% of all songs by D'Angelo for that matter)

Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love
This is not music, this is a trip
No, it's not a drug, it's something more hip
Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
Purple music does the same to my brain

"I Swear"- Cherokee. Everything from the vocals, to the guitar solo sounds like Prince. She even does the splits in the video.

"Gone"- NSYNC. Damn, this sounds like a ripoff of HCUDCMA.

"U Got it Bad"- Usher. The guitar solo is Princely, he even uses a Prince line.

"Everybody Got Their Something"- Nikka Costa. The bassline sounds like a Prince bassline. It's got that whole handclapsanfingersnaps thing goin' on.

I bought "What Is A Soul" by Father, Father back in 1990 purely down to the resemblance. It's got that whole vibe going on and is a pretty cool track. If you ever see it, get it - I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.
