Could someone please respond?

Intelligent responders needed ONLY. Mr. Squiggles, "shhhh" lol

Which guitarist at the induction ceremony said that he was still trying to learn the opening riff to When Doves Cry?

I really want to know. I am debating great guitarists with my husband and I was trying to remember this quote as proof of Prince's expertise on the guitar.

thanks

Prince claimed he only learned the song, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, a week or two
before his performance. That'll trump your hubby!
Sorry, off topic...boxed
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I've been searching for it and have not found it yet. I found this though of Billy Gibbons (OK, thats the duds name!) taking about his Hall of Fame experiance and he says this about Prince:

"I'll tell you what was the highlight for us during the entire evening, was watching Prince cut loose and just tear the sides off that guitar. That was the most incredible playing. Everybody was talking about the tremendous talent that had not necessarily been overlooked, but it was so infrequently commented on. It was a moment to really call Prince an ace guitar player. He's known as a wonderful entertainer. He's known as a great talent in songwriting and production. This was just out-and-out raw, great playing. And it made for a wonderful night. I had the opportunity to speak with a number of people who had made the Hall of Fame events in the past and hands down they said, 'Gee whiz, the collection of tonight's entertainers has just been great, one of the best events that we can remember.' I got to hang out with him. Later in the evening, after the smoke had cleared from that one stage, I was at a late-night, after-hours joint, and he walks in, so we sat there and we talked about the thing we like the most, guitars."

Cool. I'm pretty sure it was him with the When Doves Cry comment too.

Prince is the man on the g now no doubt. But that solo in When doves cry was done by Wendy.
If you watch the Purple rain tour. P's guitar playing was just average back then.

You sound just like my guitar playing brother.

"I'm Yours," "Let's Go Crazy," and "777-9311" don't sound average to me.

Prince has always been a badass on guitar. Best guitarist ever in my opinion, hence my signature.

The opening riff of When Doves Cry was done by Wendy??

That doesn't sound correct, but I am not sure. Someone who knows please shed some light on this.

hmph! This is no dis to prince, just being factual. If you look at the Purple Rain Album or CD
It says P wrote the songs, but the production, playing etc was done by the whole band.

Ex the key solo at the breakdown part of WDC that was all Doc Fink! No way thats Prince.
The same with the guitar solo it was Wendy no prince, you watch the concert video of PR
and listen to his guitar playing, thats will speak for itself.

Also alot of the early stuff that people think P did was actually dont by Jesse Johnson and Dez D! Case in point the LIL RC solo. All Dez!
All you have to do is read the album covers and watch the concerts to verify this.

Sorry hate to spoil your fun. Just for the record, P is better than both of those guys now.

I'm done, im sure you think your god is all powerful...lol so believe whatever you want.

Anyone got a written reference in a book that confirms it was Wendy who did that solo then,
I've read a few books on him and never seen it mentioned that she did it , was this mentioned in Uptown or any of their fine books then?
Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :

Per Nilsen's book, Dance Music Sex Romance confirms this was a solo recording by Prince. They did extensive research and interviewed the engineers who were there during these sessions - Peggy Mac in particular. Wendy was not present at Sunset Sound, when Prince tracked and mixed When Doves Cry by himself in February of 1984.

And as far as live, Wendy could barely handle the solo during When Doves Cry. I have yet to hear a live take where she even comes close to nailing the studio version's solo.

Ypu aren't being factual.

Here's some facts:

1. It's true that it says on the 'Purple Rain' album cover, 'Produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince and The Revolution'.

2. It's also true, if you open up the album and read the liner notes that it specifically places an asterisk next to this statement and then adds: "'The Beautiful Ones', 'When Doves Cry' and 'Darling Nikki' produced, arranged, composed, and performed by Prince.

3. It also states in the liner notes that the track was recorded at Sunset Sound by David leonard and peggy Mac, and, as Jestyr correctly points out, Peggy Mac is on record as stating that Prince recorded the song alone.

4. Matt Fink is on record as stating that the first time he heard 'When Doves Cry' was when Prince played the recording to him and Bobby Z in the car.

5. Lisa is on record as stating that the keyboard solo was recorded by Prince but she believes it was influenced by the work that Wendy and Lisa had been undertaking for Prince.

Prince recorded 'When Doves Cry'.
