Name 5 Albums From This Year Which Are Better Than Musicology...

With all the recent threads about Musicology; whether it's boring or brilliant, rehashed or refreshing, I thought it would be an interesting exercise for everyone to list 5 releases this year that they find superior.

For you hopelessly sarcastic, please avoid overdramatic statements like "Every release was better!", or, "There are thousands!"... Just gimmie 5!

Thanks for playing! biggrin

I enjoyed "Good News For People Who Like Bad News" from Modest Mouse a good deal more than Musicology, but other than that I don't think I've really listened to any other 2004 releases.

Not that I don't like Musicology, but it's just a good album, not a great one.

Musicology is a good CD, but I'd rather the "Free Prince", if you will. Not stating that he had more talent back then or that he's not free now, but I'd rather the older music even if it's borderline explicit. However, no one is as great a musician as Prince in my opinion, I just like the way he always used spirituality and sexuality and made it one. I don't know if we'll ever see that side of Prince again, but I welcome the new material, just as well. I just like these more than Musicology, but not more than "LoveSexy" or "Prince", that's for sure. music

Usher - Confessions
Lenny Kravitz - Baptism
Beastie Boys - To The 5 Boroughs
Sweetback - Stage 2
Amel Larrieux - Bravebird

I don't like any albums this year better than "Musicology" simply because I hate today's music. There's only one album besides "Musicology" that I like and that is Lenny Kravitz's new album.

The only new music I can even deal with is house music and it has been underground for years and all of it sounds alike.

I've been sick of new music since the mid 90s. All of R&B is either slow or hip hop. Nothing ever gets faster than midtempo. Rock music sounds like folk music, nowadays. I'm still waiting for hip hop to go out of style so we can get back to jamming again.

We Are We Runnin' is just one of the OK songs on the album. There are much better. Here's a few I prefer:

Lady (very cool!)
Baptised (soulful)
Minister of Rock and Roll (cool screaming!)
Destiny
Sister Mama Lover (AWESOME guitar riff and bassline)

I went & checked out some samples on ITunes. Here's what I bought:

from Baptism:
Minister of Rock & Roll
Sistamamalover
Storm
Calling All Angels

from Lenny:
Pay to Play

I have yet to listen to them in their entirety but overall I'm still disappointed in Lenny's output for the past 2 albums. Maybe he's in his "Prince 90's" phase - some of the weakest shit of his career sad But I'm glad there seem to be a few tunes worth hearing on Baptism smile

I agree that 2004 was a bad year for music. The one I still listen to from last year is Black Eyed Peas - Elephunk.

please to all the geniuses out there, get a guitar or piano and get performing. if this is what we are reduced to then we are on a road to what the corporates want, bland fucking shite. A waste of generated electricity, molded plastic in the shape of mixing desks and computer technology overall. This is the worst album i have heard in 2004. Just because the style is similar to prince doesnt give it merit. A college student could have done better than this ( apart from 'california').

I have bought Musicology, but I also like Lennys Baptism more. I am thinking of Maroon 5 but am not sure yet. Alicia Keyes or Angie Stone are other options. Slow year, I'd say.

To the guy who asked about Lennys music:

Baptism favourites:
Minister of Rock 'n roll
Lady ---it's great!
Sistamamalover
Baptized ---it's amazing, really good
Flash ---so funny lyrics.
Storm (featuring Jay-Z) ---I thought J-Z might ruin it, but it's really good.

Lenny favourites:
Battlefield of love ---it's got this "wall of sound" feeling...
If I could fall in love ---Amazing.
Believe in me ---ahhh....
A million miles away ---I think this sounds like his old stuff, I always forget it's on this album.
You were in my heart ---cool, evil, stylish, sexy.
Bank robber man ---reminds me of Mr. Cab Driver, way cool.

Hope I helped!

I agree, I don't know what people are talking about. I think it's all in where you look for good music...for example, I haven't tuned into FM radio in over 10 years.

As Hobbes said earlier (your avatar makes me hard, yo) Modest Mouse's "Good News for People Who Like Bad News" is (in my opinion) a far "better" album than Musicology. I honestly would be at a loss to describe the amount of pleasure this album has given me, is giving me. The Good Times Are Killing Me. Indeed.

Oh, and I like Musicology an awful lot, by the way, and don't understand all the recent dogging. It's not supposed to be a GRAND STATEMENT, it was just an album to remind people he could make good, catchy songs.

Also, Franz Ferdinand's self-titled CD runs circles around Musicology in terms of its ability to make me shake my ass. Got-DAMN them boys is hott.
No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.
