I'm a film student and to me Prince is sometimes lit in a way that is almost scary in parts of Purple Rain.

OMGosh!!! I used to wonder if I was the only one who noticed that! The Kids' parent's house in the movie looks like the Amityville house

yes! c thats among the many reasons y u shouldn't focus 2 much on this movie...once u start focusin on it u start not 2 like...almost happened 2 me last weekend as i was watchin it 4 the millionth time...and all i could say 2 myself was damn..the acting sux...and some scenes don't makes sence...thank god prince is fine and the musics good! lol

Is prince actually doing the ventriloquist stuff with the monkey?

The Lighting is kind of sexy. It's the acting and the fact that Prince looks like a bitch that is scary.

It was like watching little Richard's younger brother try to make it big.

Once a friend of mine was watching Purple Rain when his mom walked in during the Apollonia sex scene. She said "What the hell are you watching!?" thinking it was some obscure cheap-ass 80's porn movie

only when Prince gives those stares which is like through the whole movie

There Prince looks and acts like a little bitch, but he also wrote and directed the entire fiasco. It was like watching a really bad Eddie Murphy movie; only , at least Eddie is TRYING to be funny.

The scene where P sees himself hanging from a rope is very dark in theme. P was a "dark" dude during that period. Anyone that had seen P in concert b4 the movie knows that. Listen 2 certain parts of the 1999 album, and you'll hear some strange sounds. And Prince's "screams" on that album is kinda unsettling. "Something In The Water", prime example. The scene where P sneaks up behind Apples, trying 2 scare her. The backwards moaning playing in the background. Yeah, P tried 2 project a mysterious vibe in that movie. Some same scary.

Well now that you mention it, the scene where Apples strips and "purifies" herself somehow reminds me of Friday the 13th. I always think about what Jason Vorhees would do if he was in this scene.

The film back then didnt have the tonal range of what's available today. It's more contrasty than what we're used to seeing nowdays. They also probabbly chose more dramatic lighting for various scenes to go with the intensity of the music among other things. I think it was just a coincidence that PR has similar lighting, not a concious effort to liken it to horror flicks.

I think the lower film quality works great with movies like Nightmare on Elm Street and other popular horror flicks. You couldn't see much details in the dark areas, which gave it a creepier feeling overall. Most of the horror movies out now are too slick, you can see too much, nothing really feels like it's hiding in the darkness.
