I gotta agree with Neversin on this one. While I do think that "Call My Name" is a good choice for an R&B single, mainly due to its commercial potential, it isn't anything special. Prince has basically done this song over and over again in the last ten years. There is absolutely nothing original or inspiring about it. It sounds like about a dozen other Prince ballads.

Now, "On The Couch" is far more interesting, due to its bluesy feel. Its not single material, but it is a much better song, and it doesn't sound like every other Prince R&B seduction song.

I agree. biggrin

call my name is cool,

but i wouldn't place it

with adore or do me baby

those 2 songs alone

blow most other prince

slow jams away

someone started a thread

some time ago about how

they miss the way prince

used 2 put so much freak

and funk into his slow jams

such as insatiable and scandalous

i totally feel that

2. Prince made such a big deal about not lip-synching (particularly at the 6/25 Chicago show). I wonder if he's just willing to "suck it up" for the sake of the benefits derived from finally having a video at all. Seeing a Prince video just made me think about whether or not Prince struggles with this issue or plays both sids of the fence.

Can you clarify this? confuse confused

Yeah...sorry.

At the 6/25 show (and I know this is part of his act...I saw it on the recent tv special, too), Prince interrupts his acoustic version of "Cream" when the audience doesn't sing their parts to his liking. "Y'all lip synching!" he said to us. "There's some lip synching going on in here tonight." And he kind of did the "tsk tsk" finger wave.

Couple this with the whole philosophy behind the "Musicology" tour ("real music by real musicians," Prince says in interviews and on stage), and it's quite clear that Prince is speaking out againsts the Britneys of the world and that which, in general, currently drives modern pop music.

What I was trying to say is that Prince is, like, ALLERGIC to lip syncing. So I found it ironic that he's back to making videos, where lip synching is involved. Clearly, I was thinking, the promotional benefits must outweigh the "evil act" for P.

Hope that makes more sense.

wow!
thanks for the link.

Now.
Being a married man, that was the bomb! I loved it. I can see the comment made by "torn between the director's vision and Prince's vision". But I dug it alot. Deffinately stands out, in my opinion from other "R&B" right now. If the video is conveying the "Love the one you're with" message, I got it, and give it major kudos and I now love the song way more and want to do a personal video for my wife with that song in the background for our anniversary which is coming up any day now.

Thanks,

I think one of the problems is that due to P being married and a JW, he is not going to star in video where he is the central character and has a love interest. I mean, what else could they have done other than another performance video, like Musicology?

He could have some actors play out the roles while he sings/plays with the band.

That's not much different than how the video is now, which is him singing and playing with the band and clips of couple. I think it would be more interesting if there was a story line and he was the central character, but I don't see that happening... sad

I makes more sense, sort of smile I mean, what do you want him to do - record a live version for the video? Making a video is a tool for exposure & distribution - I don't correlate the act of making a video w/ his stance on lip syncing at all. It's a necessary thing for financial reasons...

I think we're both saying the same thing, Calhoun. I guess I'm just pointing out the irony in it...like I wonder if he sits at the video shoot going, "Man. I hate this" and just does it because there's more good served by having a video than bad.

That's all... cool

I completely agree with that statement. I think the sound, the instruments, the vocals, and the lyrics all sound as though this song could have been released 20 years ago. I love the song, reguardless of what anyone else says!

Yeah, I don't understand where these generic "R&B" complaints are coming from. It sounds very live, very much like a band playing rather than some mediocre singer scatting along to a drum machine. To me it's like the sultriest small club song he's ever done. The NY aftershow performance of it pretty much had the entire club swooning. It was the moment I knew I was going to like the album.

I totally agree with those mentioning "classic Prince". This is another incredible Prince ballad that I put with Adore and Insatiable. I've had 2 friends of mine tell me this week that they heard Call My Name and they liked it. All of you Prince fans that like to dog this Musicology project need to be reminded that this album was an album to not only bring back "real music" but also to get the old fans that got off the purple train and so far it's working. I started doubting this song as the 2nd single but I've been seeing that this was the perfect song chioce for release. Prince, once again, is doing the damn thing.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

major thanks for the video link
I am glad I saw the video because I now like the song even more (like someone else said).
I am also realizing, that Prince has really fallen hard for his wife. I know that sounds dumb but in the back of my head, I was just rating this relationship along with all the others.
Maybe this one is THE ONE. hmmm
Very pretty song. and I love the message of monogamy.
My favorite part is the group of men girl-watching and one guy sees a happy couple and looks at them longingly.
I hope the brothers are payin' attention!
