I can think of no musicians except Zappa at Prince's level. And even then, Zappa's songs don't convey the same emotional impact that Prince's songs can.

neet little website. Drag your mouse over the records. Neet effect.

He may have a little "For You" vibe going on in the video you see on his site called "Dust" as far as showing him playing every instrument. But still. They guy just strums a few power chords and taps a strait 2 and 4 and has a little harmony going on in the chorus. Prince's debut album was still miles ahead in musicianship.

Watch the video montage, that was pretty deep.

Oooh...a new one, discount bin here he comes. There are SEASONED musicians who have been in the game longer the Prince that aren't even on Prince's level. I love these clowns...they are hilarious. Every good looking mixed-black guy the strums a guitar thinks he is on Prince's level. I heard this kids album....totally unimpressed.

He was on the radio doing an interview several months back(NYC) and when asked if he has a lot of women he said "yes".

When asked again, if he gets as many woman as Prince he said "yes".

That is when I knew this guy was full of it.

I love the guy, I think he's put out the best album I've heard this year, save for the Beastie Boys and Madvillain. But to an extent, steelyd is right about new cats with a measure of talent who think they're P's musical heir apparents. I thought Hunt would have been smarter than to say some dumb stuff like that.

If he could leave giants like Tom Petty and vets like Jeff Lynne agape on the stage at the RRHOF show, then if Prince shared the stage with Van he could really hurt the boy.

Still, Van has some talent. Let's see if he can settle down a little bit.

Some just wish they were on the same level as Prince. Some that come to mind are....

Usher

I don't think Usher even comes close to being on Prince's level. He just wishes he was. He dances well, but that's about all. He sings ok, but not great. He doesn't play any instruments that I'm aware of and he has no personal style. He just copies MJ and Prince.

I don't know about the quote, but I give Van Hunt credit for being a decent songwriter. This may be his first solo album, but he's got a few years in the game. I remembered seeing his name on an album I had listened to recently, and I did some research. He co-wrote "Deliciously Down", "Mean Sleep" and "Sweet Pain" on Cree Summer's brilliant 1999 Street Faerie project.

Tell you what, he should just let the public decide. I think he's going to be very disappointed.
Who is he again?

One of the MAIN reason why the ORG SUCKS. All you purple kool-aid drinking weirdos with SELECTIVE HEARING.

All of you can go to MTV'S website and click on MTV2 and do a search for Van Hunt. You can see the interview with Van.

AND WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID WAS, and i quote "Prince is my BIGGEST influence. It's very flattering to be compared to him, and i consider it an HONOR. He's a HERO OF MINE, and to think after all the years of practice, that i MIGHT be APPROACHING his level of musicianship, etc, etc, etc."

So now all of you GO BACK and listen to the album WITHOUT prejudicial ears and realize that this is one of the most promising debut albums to come along in a VERY long time.

Now that's more like it. The afforementioned quote sounded way too cocky. I wish him well.

I am always amazed when talented (and one would assume, fairly bright) people open themselves up to this kind of criticism. Whatever happened to humility being cool?

Still, the Van Hunt record is very good. I think most Prince fans would like it.

no no no!
research b4 you post!
VH didn't "just come out!" eek
-He's been producing and writing forever. Just b/c his first album came out this year, don't assume he's new. hmph!
-Check the liner notes for Rahsaan Patterson's stuff. VH produced all of it.
-Check Cree Summer's liner notes.
-Look at VH's liner notes. Wendy's on it. Randy Jackson's on it. They go way back like ginger snaps.
-the man plays all instuments, writes all his music, produces all his stuff and some other folks' stuff.
reading reading is fundamental.

-but I guess it's not your fault that you can't do a search in the Music: Other Artists (not Prince) forum. VH is all over that forum. This discussion has been had. And if you really want to be educated, read his interview with Foley.
-this post is especially for: Moonwalkbjrain, FiveFootNine and violett. (I'm namin' names...)
"Pedro offers you his protection."

see..that's what thought. after reading alot of his interviews, i'd never think van hunt would say something like that unless he was misquoted

people need to quit defending prince like he's their first born son anyway....
