Well, once again, we get a hits medley. Same ol', same ol', right? WRONG. For me, anyway. I looked at the performance through a different filter - maybe other people did, too. Check it out: Let's leave the usual suspects at the door for one moment. Tonight it wasn't about the usual complaints and controversies. It wasn't about "fams" vs. "fans". It wasn't about club vs. org. It wasn't about religious interpretations and bodyguards and cease and desist orders. It wasn't about releasing more music or this, that, or the other. Tonight, for a few minutes, at least under my roof, I was transported back to the first time I saw Prince & the Revolution play the Grammys and the AMAs, waaay back in the day, when nothing mattered for those few blissful moments except for a man whose talent and charisma and sheer sense of presence are unparalleled. Someone turned his star sign on extra hot tonight, and I'm still blinded by it. Tonight was about showing the world why Prince is an icon - a timeless classic genius - an entertainer who does things nobody else can come near - and tonight, I am beyond proud of the man, and proud to be a longtime fan. The people in the world who don't log on to clubs and orgs every day have been reminded of someone they better never have forgotten. In those few short moments and with those tired old songs, the man delivered on so many levels - as an entertainer, as a musician, as an icon. His chemistry with Beyonce was delicious, and really - for the first time in a live television broadcast performance - he came off like a true elder statesman of popular music. And "Purple Rain" with full orchestra accompaniment? Dang. Listen - we can bicker over vaults and chocolate invasions and cease and desist orders and all that tomorrow - I might agree with some of ya, and then again, maybe I won't. For tonight, I just gotta say - if just for a few minutes - The Kid Came Back. Go figure, but for me it was AMAs/Grammys 1985 again. It was MTV debuting the live "I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star" video again. It was the live video of "America" for the first time, all over again. It was seeing the words PRINCE SPEAKS on the cover of Rolling Stone all over again. There was no weirdness, no bitterness, no "agenda", none of the usual Prince nonsense of the past ten or so years. It was exciting and enthusiastic and JOYOUS and FUN. It was the feeling of remembering why I've bothered all these years. And to me, that feeling is all that will ever matter. Bravo. Holy smokes this is good stuff... My hat is off my friend... T

End of the performance, he danced around Beyonce...then said something to Justin Timberlake (that's why they turned the camera on him)...I thought he said something about we're keepin' it clean, Justin (speculation). Hopefully someone recorded it and can figure it out.

yeah he might have said that..
BUT I caught " Dont you hate us because we are fabulous" then made that face and dropped the guitar ..or something like that I dont have it in front of me. BUT Prince did make Beyonce laugh a couple times.. I think she enjoyed the energy of a real band and show! NOT a DAT Tape Performance. When they were singing Purple Rain.. beyonce hit a amazing note and Prince turn around and said " aa you got this one" and she smiled real quick then they went back to singing the next verse together fun time.. I really enjoyed it.. the more you see it you notice allot of fun parts even though they were only on for 5 minutes.

Like it or don't, Prince completely desecrated the memories, of such a fine era as Purple Rain. Beyonce is such a talentless hag, she had no reason being near the same stage as him. Together they made Prince look more stupid than he ever could by rehashing these PRECIOUS songs from that era. I am losing more and more respect for him as an artist everyday, and tonight he lowered his own standards by putting on such an pathetic display. He embarrased himself, his band and his fams, by this.
It may make you mad, or sad, but it is the truth. Peace and I'm out.

I think Prince improved as a guitar player lately but his guitar playing lacks some surprises most of the time. I didnt see WS performance yet, but I heard that Jack is very unique. Prince was very unique in the 80s. His playing on When doves cry was fresh. I hope he brings back that energy someday. But I am happy that he at least played the guitar! ONA tour had some of his best playing in yeears I'm sorry guys but some of you like raw guitar which is fine. But it does not make a better guitar player because you play loud and raw. I prefer classy and sophisticated guitarists like Montgomery. What Prince showed again his musicianship as well. And for those who were at the Bataclan last year all this bullshit about Prince not kicking butt on guitar makes me laugh out loud. Personnally I fell asleep after 45 minutes when I saw the white stripes live. At the beginning you think wow these two guys are great. After the third tune you think mmmh do they play different styles cuz it's getting boring.

Woke up this morning (UK) to the morning tv showing clips of Prince and Beyonce perfoming - now that's something that doesn't happen everyday!
I haven't seen the performance, but just from a promotional point of view it was perfect to hook up with Beyonce especially since she won 5 awards (I believe Prince has only won 4? Go figure, they sure like their female 'soul' singers out there in the US of A, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, if you don't get 5 awards these days you're not doing very well!) And people were moaning before... and playing Purple Rain songs made sense too since it the 20th anniversary. On another note, I haven't seen the White Stripes performance, and when they first appeared on the scene I couldn't stand them, but they did a fantastic performance of Seven Nation Army on the last MTV awards, it's amazing what sounds you can produce from a poor drummer and a crappy guitar - Prince should do something like this, just him, an electric guitar and a drummer, something really raw.

The third pic is my favorite. HE looks so young in that pic.
Did'nt the end of Beyonce's second performance sound like "Solo"? Then they went to a shot of Prince applauding. "You can judge a man's character by the way he treats those who cannot do anything for him" Anonymous

Prince's performance was entertaining. BUT it's a far cry from the edge. He played it safe and probably its the smart thing to do for a national audience.
I must say I enjoyed watching the White Stripes performance alot more. It definitely had the edge.

Sorry to say but this performance did nothing for me. And, it certainly did nothing for the Purple Rain days/memory. I felt that Beyonce was featured way too much (why did she get to open the show with Prince AND her own performance later on???), and the overall energy was lacking, IMHO. I did like hearing Purple Rain backed by an orchestra (is that the first time?) like it was meant to be though, but the whole thing had a Vegas feel all over it. Very schmaltzy, but I suppose it did it's job, and that was to remind people that Prince is still alive.
And, to anyone who thinks I'm just a huge, spoiled Prince fan judging this, a friend of mine, who likes Prince but is one of those Purple Rain-memories type fans, called me and felt the exact same way about the performance...basically, Beyonce get yo' ass (as fine as it is!) off the stage right now!!!

I wont see the performance until Thursday nights E4 airing in the UK but all I can say is... "at last!"
Seems that one of the pictures of Beyonce & Prince is being used by most websites when talking about the Grammys. Not a bad move to perform with the 5 time winner eh? For me the performance has served it's purpose. People know he's still about and can still cut it. All being well P is set up for a great 2004 [b]if[\b] he can just keep up this momentum. Now that may be asking too much (given past performance) but I am a born optimist and plan to stay that way..!

But the TV-Channel ZDF put the right photo in front of the article about the Grammy Night. http://www.heute.t-online...40,00.html

I cant believe i missed half the set...i went outside for a smoke just before the show started thinking i'm gonna sit right thru the whole show until Prince is on...I came inside turned on the TV & there he was just finishing off Purple Rain & just before that HO Beyonce showed up...I was that pissed off I really missed the groove of the whole performance...needless to say I hope i get a chance to see the show again if they replay it on MTV (i hope) he tore the place up...but please dont insult the man by suggesting that he needs the commercial pull of a current artist like Beyonce...the man is a legend...give him the stage & leave the window dressing for the Christmas store displays...dont get me wrong Beyonce is damn fine...but get her off the stage when the master is preaching... Well I would have preferred to see Prince perform alone. Beyonce is ok, but it seemed like she was taking over a lot of the performance or it could be Prince let her.
Anyway: I thought it ironic how many people who performed or attended had worked with or recorded something by Prince. Carmen, Nora Jones, George Clinton, Madonna and the list goes one. I watched the red carpet previews and thought, wow he's worked with a lot of people in the industry. BTW: Did anyone see Najee on the Early Morning Today Show the weekend? He has an album out and did give Prince a mention saying he's been touring with him on/off of the past two years. **************************************************

I have to admit, I was a total sceptic going into this performance. I've always thought Beyonce had a great voice, but I've never cared for the ultra-plastic pop of Destiny's Child. I wasn't thrilled by the idea of her performing with Prince. I'm happy to say, she won me over.
This wasn't, by any means, one of Prince's greater performances. It WAS, one of his smartest, however. First off, he seems determined to do the whole "comeback" thing this year, so the smart thing was to focus on the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain by doing a medley of hits from that album. Sure, we Prince fans are all sick of the medleys, but this wasn't a regular concert, and it was done for those people who have long since forgotten how incredible he is. By teaming up with Beyonce, he gave himself cred with many young kids who've never heard of him before, as well as giving Beyonce the chance to team up with a living legend (Beyonce seems determined to move towards a little bit more serious music, and teaming with Prince would certainly give her the chance to be seen with a tad bit more respect). This was also a smart move in the aftermath of the whole Justin/Janet debacle. The media was no doubt looking at this to see if Prince would attempt to out-dirty Janet (keep in mind, the world at large really is unaware of Prince's JW conversion and all that. They still think of him as the guy who sang songs like "Darling Nikki" and "Head"). By turning in such a classy performance, they were guaranteed to get favourable comparisons to the Super-Bowl. All in all, it was a decent performance, but it was an incredibly smart move commercially. I can't remember the last time I applauded a business move P made, but I've gotta give him props for this. Oh, and P was CLEAN!!! That suit was too sweet! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. i dug the Funk expo (where was Buckethead-he was on the pre-show w/Bootsy) i dug 'Hey Ya' not a fan of Christina...but even she sounded good. but, ShitGawdDamnGetOffYerAss&Jam...the white stripes done run away with best performance. raw real a stripped-down-electric-ride they hit with a medley too, but hammered down a raw-loose-real performance, as only these 2 D-Troit cats can do. how they can make a voice/guitar/drum sound more forward thinking than the most complex stage show with 20-30 various peeps on stage is f'n amazing!!! jacks solo is where P needs to go if he is ever gonna get the props he deserves as a guitarist. i truly love P's guitar- but i am rarely taken aback/SURPRISED by his guitar as of late. on the otherhand, Jack White kills it anew everytime i see him rip into his instrument. i am lucky enough to live in detroit, and have seen him perform since his early days, and he still blows me away with how he reinvents what the guitar can do. he never leaves you feeling that his licks have been rehearsed 1001 times. he truly takes a journey with each performance and especially each solo. i love his idea in this interview about new artists only being able to record with 4 tracks. think how that would truly seperate the real artists from the Brittneys. how cool would this be? what a newly exciting music industry it could be. not just a few artists---but a whole new raw-real top 40 it could be. HELL FUCK YEAH!!! LIKE I SAID BEFORE...JACK WHITE IS A GUITAR GOD!!!
