Sixth Philly report Caught the Philly show last night at The Academy of Music. My first Prinec show... I was extremely impressed even though it was a Hits tour. Great venue... opera house with 4 tiers and all the seats were red velvet. I got there very early and once inside there were keeping people in the lobby. No one was allowed to look through the doors, but I snuck up to the second floor when no one was looking and caught about 45 minutes of Prince soundchecking. He mainly played Uptown to check sound.. Here's a few highlights:
Show didn't start until about 9:45. Geneva's tight white pants ripped on her thigh, and her top came uptide once so she danced offstage to get someone to tie it back. Nothing "popped out." People got on stage this time during "Gett Off". Some guy was escorted off after he tried to sing the song using Prince's mic... Prince was really classy though, waiting for security to do the dirty work and take him away from the mic. I don't think he cared much. The rant before "When WIll We Be Paid" was about Napster and Corporations, etc.... Najee had a lot of problems with his sax mics so he frequently had to use Prince's mic.. but not without making a horrendous noise while turning his sax mic off while walking towards the center mic. Basic array of hits and medleys. Prince seemed really happy with the audiences volume when he listened to us sing. Show was over at 11:35 with no real encores. He thanked the crowd for coming about 4 songs before he left so maybe those were our encores. Highlights for me were "Uptown", "Nothing Compares.." and "The Beautiful Ones". He never missed a note or cracked his voice. One of the best live shows I've ever seen. | |
