pinkcashmere23 said: Sorry I can’t find the original post but I think you’re referring to ‘Empty Room’? If so, I agree the intensity of this song is palpable, especially in the Zurich 2011 show (my favorite version). I knew he had written this for Susannah but didn’t know until this interview that it was during Bobby Z’s wedding. I always wondered who he was thinking of when he performed it at the Zurich 2011 show, it was so visceral and devastatingly sad. You never know with Prince.

Yes,I was referring to 'Empty Room." The performance in Zurich was something special and it did seem he was relating to it personally that night. I haven't seen it in a while but I remember vividly that shattering scream at the end and it giving me chills.

I love the 2009 Montreux performance, because he has his guitar literally "crying" to the song. The notes that he gets on that guitar are just other-worldly. I love the way it starts too with the marching snare drum and then Renato's piano starts and you hear the roar of the crowd as they realize what song he's about to play, and then Prince gradually builds his guitar into a frenzy of emotion, and he is mouthing the sound of the guitar. Prince also cut his hand on something and has to lick it twice while playing, but he doesn't miss a beat. The crowd is going nuts. It's just amazing!!

*

Then he goes right into the song Elixir, and he has a little smirk on his face when he sings, "when my guard is ever low, there's a place I can go..." He was definitely communicating to someone that night...maybe even the original subject of the song wink

*

I watch this performance a lot - it's sooooo freakin' good! So glad I grabbed it while it was on YT!!

I did. I got the impression there was not a lot of romance except for the Paris and Nice time, and he was there making a movie anyway so that seemed simply coincidental to me. We know he was pillow talking and seeing Devon during this time and maybe Vanity and Jill also. “I have to get engaged” is what he said to Devon when he ended their relationship. But he then called Devon from France and asks her to come see him so he isn’t committed to Susannah at this time either. Sounded to me like Susannah was a bit of a squatter who wouldn’t leave even though Prince left her several times to visit one of his other women. Their sex life was nothing special according to her.

She never said that their sex life wasn't special just normal sexuality

Yes, her discussion of their sexual relations was in reference to Toure asking her about it, because Prince's songs were often very sexual in nature. She was, as diplomatically as possible, trying to explain that his hyper-sexual persona on stage and/or in his music was something different than his sexuality as a man, not a performer.

@muchtoofast:

We need to be real here for a minute. Thinking that Devon D was anything more than a sexual diversion/side piece for Prince, like so many others, would be quite naive, I think. Regardless of Prince supposedly telling her he "had to get engaged" (and I think Jill Jones was the one who actually made that statement), the fact remains that:

-Prince flew Suannah to NY

-he arranged for her to be presented with a 6 carat ring

-he flew her to Paris to spend a week with him alone

-he flew her to Nice for most of his time there

-he put her front and center in the Girls & Boys video

-he planned and lived in the Galpin house with her

-oh, and he wrote some of his best love songs for/about her

*

I don't recall Prince doing any of the above for/with Devon, Vanity, Jill...??? Prince refused to even introduce Devon to the members of The Revolution. She was a sex toy for him for a period of time. If she was anything more he would have been doing all of the above for her and not Susannah.

*

As has been stated numerous times, Prince was NEVER completely monogamous. So, if you take that piece off of the table, and you base his feelings off of the songs he wrote - because this is how he communicated those feelings - then, sorry - I gotta give it up to Susannah in terms of who was most important to him and affected him on a deeper level.

I think prince was seeing jill in NY because she had an apartment there at the time. Susannah mentioned he will go to NY a lot

Agreed! It's an amazing performance! I think that it was his former manager Kiran that posted about him cutting his hand and licking it iirc. I think he was associating the song with someone too and he was presumably in a relationship at the time so he didn't seem to be relating it to a then recent breakup. I love another performance of the song with 3rd Eye Girl where he played the piano and opened the song by saying "You said you'd never leave.Where did you go baby? Where'd you go?" I think it was one of the shows in London in 2014. He appeared to be wiping his eyes after similar to Montreux 2013. That song clearly had an effect on him.

Yes, Jill definitely seemed to be a side girl for quite awhile. Although, I thought Susannah said he would "always be flying off somewhere" - not necessarily just to NY. I think Jill got the roughest deal out of any of them - delayed album, shipped off to NY from PR tour through Parade, and then reduced role in GB. She stuck it out the longest though.

They are out there but I'm not seeing them as often as a few years ago. The version he played with them for the Live Out Loud tour in 2013 was nice too. I believe Prince was on keys usually while Donna played the solos.

She said it was more normal than you’d believe. So it wasn’t special. Touré specifically asked about their sex life so me mentioning it is not from somewhere out in left field. We want to know because sexuality was his lifeblood.

I have Devon’s book and she said he told her he had to get engaged. It wasn’t Jill who said that. And I’m not saying Susannah wasn’t important to him but I will say that he said himself that any ballad he writes is not based on anything carnal, or flesh based. I think he pulled ideas from every relationship and wrote a song that could be aimed at any woman which made it universal and therefore a successful seller. He was a musician but he was also a businessman.

He flew her to France, then flew her out and called a “side piece” because Susannah meant so much to him?? That is nonsensical, sorry. And why believe everything Susannah says about the shopping? Could be she pressured him to buy the ring, we don’t know for sure. Prince seems to me to be a man who got yanked around a bit by women who couldn’t take a hint and leave. He didn’t want to hurt them, or end up in a tabloid, or he just didn’t have the skills to handle relationships that should be ended.

Susannah was beautiful, and cheap labor. We heard a bit of resentment from her about all the albums she worked on but were never released.

Prince got "yanked" around by women?? Prince was probably one of the biggest "players" of women, especially during the 80's. Prince did exactly what he wanted to do whenever he wanted to do it.

*

Did you listen to the interview at all? Susannah stated mutliple times - the relationship was done HIS WAY only - no discussions. She stated arguments were one-sided, because there was no listening to her feelings about the relationship. Prince's Manager, Alan Leeds, told Susannah that Prince wanted her in NY with him. Susannah went because he requested her to be there.

*

I seriously doubt, at 21 yrs old, that Susannah was pressuring Prince in any way about marriage. Again, Prince did what he wanted to do at any given time.

*

Prince and his alleged flings were always in the tabloids during that time. He even referenced those tabloids in the Sheila E video for Sister Fate. That was actually good press and exposure for him back then.

*

The fact that Prince, feeling so upset about his argument or separation from Susannah, felt compelled to have the band record his song about it on Bobby Z's wedding day- well, I think that about sums it all up right there.

Hmm interesting. I haven't read Devin's book so I wasn't aware of that. I think in some songs the lyrics were pretty nuetral but in some he would mention certain details that would make it somewhat obvious to the person it was written for such as "Big Tall Wall" referencing an apartment building that Susannah had moved into. I was just listening to it earlier and he also talked about her "brown curly hair" Of course that's not exactly a love song and he does mention toward the end that he has another girlfriend but he obviously wanted her to realize that it was about her by mentioning those details.

You forgot when she went to France with him and he made her turn around to go home. (UTCM) Funny how these things work, when 1 or 2 people try to change the narrative.

According to Alex Hahn's book:

Prince was looking for locations to film another movie, and he went to Paris. He decided to shoot Under the Cherry Moon, there. Prince wanted the movie in black and white, he and WB came to an agreement and filmed it in color but transferred it to black & white. He hired Jerome Benton, he wanted Susannah to play the lead but the studio didn't like that and hired Kristin Scott Thomas.

.

Prince and his entourage flew to Paris and were in a fine mood. Susannah M was with him and apparently wearing an engagement ring. Prince gave Susannah a ring and she misinterpreted it as a marriage proposal. When they got to the hotel in France, Prince instructed Alan Leeds to escort Susannah back to the States, to MN, he didn't want her going to LA to cry on Wendy and Lisa's shoulder. With Susannah gone, France became P's playground with women and he would also have SheilaE and Jill Jones visit him.

Prince got a hard-on for Devon when he saw her first Playboy spread during the PR tour in December 1984. His people contacted her, and he started flying her out to some of the shows to screw around with him after the concerts. She was a complete stranger to him. It was a sex thing. I'm sure she was one of several PB centerfolds that he screwed during that time. This is not a shocker. Very common in the "rock star" world, and Prince was soaking up every bit of it. Many men can separate sex from love, and I'm sure Prince was able to as well.

Meantime, he was also writing songs like Nothing Compares 2 U and Condition Of The Heart when Susannah broke it off during that period of time.

Oh right, of course.....because Alex Hahn was personally there with Prince as all of this was happening, right?? I guess Mr. Hahn was staying in their hotel room in Paris that week too, right? So, we should believe Alex Hahn (didn't he have a law suit against Prince?) over Susannah's statements about Prince asking her to marry him while they were staying in Paris together? Oh, okay.

*

And we also know that while Susannah was back in MN Prince was calling her multiple times per day. Again, no one's denying that Prince wanted to have his cake and eat it too- as he did in every relationship. However, it's clear that he did not want to lose Susannah. Did Jill or Sheila plan and build the Galpin house with him? Nah, don't think so. Jill was the most used and abused out of all of them.

*

I also find the supposed "engagement" of Sheila and Prince during the SOTT tour quite curious now that we know Prince was flying Susannah out to many of the shows in Europe during that tour.

I think he pulled ideas from every relationship and wrote a song that could be aimed at any woman which made it universal and therefore a successful seller. He was a musician but he was also a businessman.

Right Pink. I think it's absolutely ludicrous to say that Prince did not write songs with specific people in mind, especially women he loved. His music had NOTHING to do with being a businessman. He lived and breathed his music, literally - and he was inspired by people and events around him. That is what artists do - they take inspiration from those around them. Were some of his songs about general topics? Of course. However, many songs were connected to specific people, places, etc. Big Tall Wall was 100% about Susannah moving into the round stone apt building in MN "I'm gonna build a big tall wall, stone circle so you can't get out..."

@muchtoofast:

So, when Prince was asked by a fan during his online chat in 1997 who the subject of Forever In My Life was, and he said, "susannah. she knows"....I guess he was lying then?? When he was asked by a fan during NPGMC pre-show at his Ohio concert who inspired Adore, and he responded, "Susannah"....I guess he was also lying then too??

*

It's just completely ludicrous to say that Prince never wrote songs for or about specific people. Just completely absurd.

Ex-Playboy Playmate Devin Devasquez Regarding Prince on Howard Stern

Howard Stern had ex-Playboy Playmate Devin Devasquez on his show this morning. During the discussion it came up that she had dated Prince in 1984-85, meeting him for the first time at one of the Chicago shows on the Purple Rain tour, The relationship lasted for about six months, but broke off because they saw each other very little due to their hectic schedules at the time. However, she did mention that Prince had written a song for her..."Bedtime Story," which was later released by Sheila E. on her Romance 1600 album in 1985. She even sang a little bit of it for Howard!

*

This was a thread from 2002 after DD discussed it with Howard Stern. So, I guess I'm confused. If Devin was so incredibly important to Prince why was she not the one living at the Galpin house with him? Why did she not get a ring? Makes no sense to me, really. The excuse that they "broke it off" because of hectic schedules is a joke, as Prince could have flown her anywhere at anytime.

Gosh I didn’t say that. I think he may have had a deep love for someone but you’d need a pick axe to get to his heart. I haven’t seen the Ohio interview. Also notice how easy the word “wife” would have fit into FIML, but was never said.

The same could be said about you....were you personally there?

What week? Prince put her on the next plane home and made Alan Leeds go with her. lol Evidently it wasn't Susannah that was with him for that 'engagement' week.

With Susannah gone, France became P's playground with women and he would also have SheilaE and Jill Jones visit him.

http://prince.org/msg/7/441586?&pg=23

He didn’t want to hurt them, or end up in a tabloid, or he just didn’t have the skills to handle relationships that should be ended. Susannah was beautiful, and cheap labor. We heard a bit of resentment from her about all the albums she worked on but were never released. [Edited 1/5/19 18:47pm]

I really really hope he loved these women, all of them. He was so vulnerable and complicated and he worked his ass off to please us, so I hope there was someone somewhere who gave him peace.

From what I understand, it was when they arrived in Nice that she left to go back to MN - not Paris. However, she had to have come back at some point, because the Girls & Boys video was filmed in Nice, and she is showcased in that video.

*

Yeah, I'm going to tend to take the word of the person that actually knew and had a personal relationship with Prince, and who was actually physically there with Prince over a guy who didn't know him at all. I think that's a safe bet.

Were you there? What makes you think that he was so upset about his argument or seperation from Susannah? And that wasn't very respectful of Prince to pull them all in on Bobby's wedding day, now was it?

Love, love, love Empty Room. So agree with those who noted the feeling with which P sings this song. The feeling, the vocal inflections, the guitar, the interplay of voice and guitar, the pauses, the quiet and loud...absolutely adore.

Also want to second the recommendation for reading what Devin DeVasquez has to say in her book.

Here's another good place to hear what Devin has to say:

Uh...you've got the relationship with him and Devon all wrong.......
