You're right, no one is asking the question because most of us know where we stand on this one, but I think it's the question Tyka felt she wanted to address.
I think that in her excitement about what she was going to share, we felt her energy and made the assumption that the surprise would be something from the vault, unreleased DVDs, or his autobiography, etc...I think everyone would have loved any of these and it's natural to be disappointed.
However, to her, he's not just Prince the international superstar, he's her big brother teaching her how to tie her shoes and visiting her and encouraging her everyday when she was in rehab. I believe that, in her heart, she wanted to make him proud.
She chose to honor him by asking a question in song and IMHO I think he'd be delighted with the question that she chose. Afterall, Prince was all about the afterworld...
I'm just happy to see a tribute that IMO came from a place of love and respect.

I agree. Tyka is a singer, after all (she recorded a few albums of her own), and it seems only fitting that she would want to record a song to honor her late brother. I think what is upsetting people the most is that she did this on Prince's Birthday, and it gives the impression to people that she did this just to plug her song. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and I understand Tyka's pain and wanting to do this as a gift to her late brother. I guess it's just a no-win situation. If this song helped her find closure with her brother, then it's all good. I don't think Tyka had any ill-intent with putting this song out. I do agree with other's that she could have done this at another time. I think people's expectations were high and then were crushed. Makes me think of that Kool and the Gang song "Mislead". People felt they were mislead.

Looks like we reached the same conclusion, clover. I agree, she could have done this at another time, but I think she really wanted to make this a birthday gift for him.
She could have done the same thing and not shared it with us, but instead she chose to include us. I think that's nice and I don't think all she's thinking about is money...as laura said earlier in this thread, she's not going to get rich off this project.
When she refers to not knowing where she'd be without his help, (given her history), it's just heart-wrenching for me. I think this was, among other things, her way of celebrating their shared hope in the afterlife.

I like the song. I love the pictures of Prince that she voluntarily shared with us; and I also like the fact that she paid tribute to close family members who are no longer with her. |

I agree and I personally appreciate that aspect of the song as a needed reminder that I should not dwell in sadness because of Prince's passing; but have a sense of gladness for him because he is right where he longed to be. |

It is not bad, by far. OK, the sound is what it is, it's 2017. The song is still something.
I really like the ambiguity in "Brother", very Princey and that's what makes it a good song. It could be about Prince, but it works out of context. Lyrically, it ain't no Dylan, eh... But it's an extraordinary story. The girl tries to live in the shadows of the man (like every person that came close to him), but the guy is her brother, year after year he grows bigger and farther away, then the dope and the dicks you don't feel like sucking (pardon my french). She went down low, man.
I can see how you would interpret this as a solo "2300 Jackson Street" or some way to capitalize on the blood, and make an ad for PP visits. So some guys did the music for this, it's show-business, you can't expect Prince-levels, or you're a deluded fruitcake anonymous. The girl has some money to spend, it was her brother's gift, willingly or not. After what she went through, I think it's OK. I'm still mad at her for publicizing "The One Song", though. Let this embarassment of a tune rest in peace... Prince was a very kind spirit, but the One Song is something you say to a person to start a conversation. On record, it's ridiculous and the total opposite of the Lovesexy Spirit. "The One Song" finds Prince in a very sad and depressed place, maybe worse than "Solo", because at least "Solo" admits the bleakness he was in.
I think given Tyka's story (going down on toxic drugs can only mean the whole family situation caused her some pretty serious wounds), I think it's a beautiful way to celebrate Prince. I sure wish that in the future, June 7th gets more celebrated than April 21st.
Nice, honest, respectful assessment, in my opinion. June 7 vs April 21st: I know Prince's wishes no longer matter, but what about the fact that in a couple of interviews (Mel B and I can't recall the interviewer in the other) Prince stated that he doesn't really celebrate the day he came into the world but the day he will leave would be cause for celebration. Your thoughts? |

We're fatally biaised because spreading P's work comes with monetary problems. It's gonna take money not to see Paisley taking rust, and everyone here can understand that. It's not like there were some mystical forces at work to preserve Audubon Road forever, and even if there were, better be safe than sorry.
This video is great, fantastic shots, perfect use of photos (at last!), parcimony with the family pictures, I could do without Tyka dancing, but hey, if she found her teen years again, go Sister. That's not the end of the road, fo' sure. It never is.
Even the last shots are honest. I see folks lost, more than anything. They didn't expect Prince passing, they didn't expect any of this. It's like they won the lottery for no reason, and everyone is mad at them. Let them be, they'll grasp it with time. At least Tyka already knows how important Prince can be on an emotional level.
To cure the ear of the people, man! I'll count the days.

I think we all need to give her a chance! Her songs may not always catch on first listen but they do grow on you. I enjoyed her Brand New Me album quite a bit, I found it uplifting.
People compare her to Prince but that's a very tough comparison, such people with his talents are incredibly rare thats why they attract so much attention, it's best to see her as a separate person in her own right, she has her own individual musical style. Grief is a personal thing and people deal with it in different ways, it's good that she can at least let it out and express herself and use this as an outlet to reach out to fans and share with us the pictures etc. This is especially true when you consider the pressure she's been under dealing with the issues of the estate.

If Prince was my brother, I probably would have done this same thing, but I would have chosen a different day to do it. I also think that it would be wonderful if she took the money/proceeds from this song and give to a charity that Prince loved. Or better yet, give the money to help people who are struggling with chronic pain. It only seems like the natural thing to do.
