But do we need a greatest hits with post 1996 stuff? Do we all not make our own playlists on our devices anyway, even by simply hitting "shuffle"? Post-1996 would be 'very best', since his hits were far and few between by that point and beyond.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

No need to give away the crown jewels straight away. Just a sprinkle of 'unreleased' hits to cement the legacy. lol

There were no "HITS" after 1996. His last TOP 40 hit was in 1995 EYE HATE U which charted at #12, after that he never had another single break the TOP 40.

a greatest hits package makes sense. to spark interest and new fans but remember, since the hits/bsides he's had like 20 more years worth of music to add to that package. i'm for it.

yeahthat

I'm all for this. It makes sense from a marketing viewpoint to expand the base. A lot of people got exposed to P's music for the first time when the videos flooded youtube and other sites. Those people will probably not buy the individual albums, but would spring for a hits compilation. From there their interest might grow and they'll be ready to buy more, thus strengthening the expanded base. That said, I hope they also put out something for the already solid fams.

Love that Susan Rogers will be involved! woot! From what I gather, even during the time she and P were working together she was already giving thought to his place in history. IMO that point of view is crucial in deciding what to do with the vault material.

In the US. Besides, they can avoid calling it "Hits" and call it something like "Crown Jewels".

The version which exists is the re-recording he did with different lyrics, the original, 'mythical' version, was deleted.

Well sure if we're defining hits as billboard chart toppers. I'd prefer to not call it that. But put something out that gives people a sample of the best of Prince thar might entice them to buy more of his music. I would gear this towards the more casual fan. Again I'm thinking of something they could quickly get out there. I don't want them to rush with the unreleased music. Take the time to do it right. Something else they could get out quickly is live stuff. Put the P&M shows out there and I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

--/ The are already two greatest hits packages neither of which have the 12inch versions of anything on them.

There is a disc (11 tracks) of 12 inch versions as part of "Prince - Ultimate" http://www.princevault.co...:_Ultimate

-- I had T12 inches for years before the Ultimate came along.

I know that, but I believe the re-recorded version is also worth that status. As far as I know, until a few weeks ago nobody had claimed to have heard it before.

-/1000 Hugs and Kisses made into RnB chart last year. Making him 3rd behind Aretha and James Brown for having the most top ten RnB hits. Anyone who thinks the bulk of his catalogue had a chance in hell of making it in the pop charts is smoking crack and he was never going to make it on any without a recording contract with a major label.

There is already three Greatest Hits packages already out there...fuck the masses. It's time to start celebrating the depth of his artistry. To re-package the hits is shortsighted. There is so much great unheard music that would create NEW hits and a real new base of music lovers.

Why? The Hits / The B-Sides, The Very Best Of Prince & Ultimate Prince are all readily available.

No, they'll remaster the tracks and/or offer 2 or 3 rareities so they can sell it to those of us that already have everything.

If they add music from 94 onward then I'm fine with a new greatest hits , also nice if they throw in a few unreleased tracks

I bet there will be very little, if any, of that. Beautiful Girl will probably be there but I wouldn't expect many if any of the non-WB tracks at this point. Hope I'm wrong.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic but i think this could have more than 2 discs of music and maybe a dvd. They need to make it worthwhile to pull in the casuals that lapped up the hits albums already out. Adding just a couple of extra singles/unreleased tracks won't do that imo. As for the name; it'll probably be called something like "the essential prince collection"

I'm sensing the good old commercial "Greatest Hits, including 3 new unreleased tracks" to make all the fans buy it all over again.

I'm glad Susan is on board, but if they are rushing out some unreleased tracks, I worry for the legacy planning in regards to the anthology of work.

As far as I know there isn't a greatest hits album that includes his entire career. So that would be new and would be welcome.
