she seemed to get a couple big breaks, the last dragon and action jackson, after that she fell of the map.

And don't forget Jackie Collins Lady Boss (1992) its a trashy classic.

I've always liked V within the context of P's world.

She was pretty and I liked the way they looked together, but I never found her to be particularly talented although I tried.

I wanted to like her. I wanted to miss her when she left P's world.

I just couldn't find enough to make me care much about her journey.

me either but like all the ladies of that era, people are just stuck on them. You never hear people reminiscing over andre, dez, fink or z like that.

^^I've always like Memories of Murder. Next to The Last Dragon I think it was her best role, and something different for her.

I don't think the remark about her dad ended her career. I think it was drugs, and not being particularly talented that ended it for her. I always felt that she would have been a good host for an MTV/BET type show.

She stands out among the other ladies and associated artists because of her charisma. She made you want to watch her, listen to her and look at her. Unfortunately there was nothing to really keep you there, she was definitely a novelty act. She would have done better with better songwriters and stylists. The diy approach did her no favors.

Jill is is my fave protege next to Vanity, but she didn't really have the charisma to go far. Neither did Apollonia (boring as all get out), or the rest of the bunch. For most of these women it stopped at their looks.

Yuuuuuup it was melodramatic, but Vanity was great, she could have been a bond girl or a great villain......would have been perfect in something like American Horror Story: Hotel, had she continued acting.

The one thing I always appreciated about V was that she never seemed deluded. What I mean is, she showed up and seemed to be trying to do her best at singing, the dance steps, acting...but she even said in her interview with Donny Simpson that she knew she was no singer or actress but that she was trying. Also, she never said anything mean about her experience in P's world. She said she was friends with Appolonia (all those gals came to her funeral all these years later too which says alot).

She seemed to know that she was pretty and not much more in terms of talent. She knew people were expecting her just to be pretty, but she wanted to be more than that. But she also knew that she wasn't good at being more than pretty. She seemed so sad to be marginalized like that.

I respected that she acknowledged her deficits. I don't think she felt that people, including P, had faith in her ability. That's why she left P's world, where it was "safe", but she was just a pretty girl in a box.

She wanted to be more and even though life tried to keep her from her goals, she kept trying to reach them...until she changed focus to her religious beliefs.

I didn't follow her career much past the Last Dragon and Action Jackson era until I heard she had died. I felt sad and Googled to see what she'd been up to. The drug use surprised me, but it looked like after she got off drugs she did end up having many years of a satisfying life.

I was glad to hear that.

I never saw 'Never Too Young To Die' in its entirety.....just a few clips. In one scene,Vanity gets tied up by the bad guys and when they get in her face, she spits on them biggrin in the other scene that I recall,Vanity is taking a shower outside, using a water hose while John Stamos watches and loses his mind, lol

I agree. While I dug Nasty Girl the Vanity 6 album wasn't anything to write about.

You can only give kudos to the music somewhat thanks to the Purple one.

Her acting was just okay.

As far as her singing career goes...I think she just needed stronger material. Her first album,Wild Animal, was a mess....sterile production, lousy songs and alot of squealing throughout smile The second album,Skin On Skin showed some improvement, but what Vanity really needed was some heavyweight producers like Jam and Lewwere both is.Look what they were able to do with Janet Jackson (who's not really much of a singer, either).

Man.......them 2 trax on the Action Jackson Sdtk were STRAIGHT FIRE!!!! And they were both produced by Jesse Johnson!!!! so imagine if Vanity had a Project produced by BOTH Jam & Lewis AND Jesse Johnson???? OOOOOOOOOOH WHEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

eek

+1 :: i liked 52pick-up and last dragon and then she felloff the map until around 2006 or whenever her husband got arrested for double kidnap and murder. eek she was the most charismatic of all of prince proteges and she was better as an actress than a singer. i'm glad she found peace for the last decades of her life because her childhood was very rough.

She did an interview on Video Soul 1984 or 1985. She was talking about her gorilla skin coat and she mentioned something to the effect you can't get much blacker than that. This was some time before her comments on Joan Rivers. I don't know if some of you remember but The Joan Rivers Show was cancelled due to low ratings so I doubt if a lot of people heard about the comment and most of Joan's audience didn't even know who Vanity was. lol Vanity was a star in black America. She was not a mainstream star. So, no, I don't think her comments about her father affected her career at all. It was all about the drugs, the partying and her not being able to handle it or not wanting to handle it as well as many of her other peers.

Enough people heard here remarks about her father that I think it did hurt her with her main audience, Black folks at that time. She was no longer with Prince and she was really on her own. I had to fall back on my fandom at the time. I don't think the remark caused her career to collapse but I don't think it help it much either.

She was blessed to do a movie with Billie Dee Williams, I don't remember the name but I saw it on Bouince TV a few weeks ago.
