Yeah the stories on the internet were that Rick James ''discovered'' Vanity first, but she and Prince met and that was it for both of them for sometime..they got really into one another and didn't look back.

Rick wanted Vanity to be lead singer of the Mary Jane Girls (his all girl, multi racial band) which he confided in Prince about..told him on tour when Prince opened for Rick that he was going to put a girl group 2gether..one white girl, one black, one spanish, etc...long story short, Prince took Vanity, took the idea and it became Vanity 6.

This is according to all i have read, and apparently Rick always had a thing against Prince because of it.

Vanity met Prince in 1980 i don't think Wendy was in the band then..i know Lisa and Jill were and Jill and Vanity were aways good......Jill, Apples, Brenda and Susan (along with Prince i keep reading) went to her memorial as well when she passed away.

I think it is in Hahn's book and refers to both Vanity and Apollonia. Actually I think Vanity is a better singer than she is given credit for. Sure her voice has limitations and she was the first to admit Barbra Streisand had nothing to be worried about but it is how she used what she had that is interesting. And let's face it Madonna knows she is not a great singer also, it came down to her persona and iconic image to make her a success.

Wendy being a real musician I am sure looked down on these girls. But Wendy and Lisa were also not commercial enough to get big on their own so there's that. Prince had both the chops and the showmanship to get huge.

I think there may have been hard feelings that Prince spent alot of time with Vanity and not with the others on that Triple Threat Tour. I have no clue what really happened but there might be some side eye and not just with Vanity but with members from other eras if you have been watching. I guess some jealousy etc can be expected. Everyone's success more or less is related to Prince's success so they all want to be the closest to him. It's understandable.

I think she was holding out thinking eventually he would commit. I just watched one of her preaching videos from a few years back. She mentioned Prince and she said everyone always asked her if she left Prince and then she says, "I gave up Prince for the Prince of Peace" and at that moment you hear her voice crack a little while she wipes a tear from under glasses. This video is with the one posted of her on with Bill O'Reilly up above. The video is about an hour long and the camera is above her. She was truly a sweet and funny lady, still beautiful too.

Oh and she does mention that when she first had her come to Jesus moment, that she was still kinda slipping back and forth to the "worldly" and still had a couple of fornication moments. She said that her pastors (Harpers) admitted to her a while after, that they were afraid to have her in their church for fear that she would ruin their community (through fornicating I am assuming). So her conversion did not make her squeaky clean at first. I wonder who she had "fornicating" incidents with?

The Triple Threat Tour was the same as 1999 tour with a different name, right? If so, I read somewhere that Prince and Vanity ticked the rest of the band off when the two of them took over of one of the tour buses all to themselves and threw everybody else to the other tour bus.

i just watched it...i noticed she mentions Prince a lot in these christian videos...i have seen others where she mentions him..in one of them she mentioned him as ''the short cat'' LOL and i laughed. when i heard it..not everyone knew who she was referring to and she said thats what we in the inner circle call him now ''short cat'' she was like ''think about it cuz you know who i'm talkin bout!'' It was cute.

Funny she was married to a Football player..not a nice guy..he was abusive towards her..but still well known athlete and he was her husband but she NEVER mentions him, or their life..or lvoing him the way she does Prince in all her testimony even as late as 2015.

I heard this one a couple of weeks ago. It's interesting that she laughs off the question intially and then says that there are friends that she talks to but that's a private matter. Then she lists the others by name.

This interview is from April of last year. Her health took the downturn in September (according to her FB) and she knew that the complication was fatal. I wonder if she called Prince and others and said her "goodbyes".

Hi Topaz

You can sure look at it that way if you want. It really all boils down to a difference in belief systems. In your belief system, there is no higher spiritual connection or purpose in romantic relationships and all boils down to chance, initiative, and fate. The confluence of both random and planned attempts rather than a higher purpose. I would just point out that Prince himself was very religious and believed in some kind of supernatural power. He gave significance to numbers (esp 7), and even told Vanity that they had been each other in another life. There's no scientific way to explain that sense of knowing, it is part of the mystery of life. While I personally don't believe there is necessarily one person who was meant to be with another in life, I certainly have no reason to not believe it either, even if for many people it does not appear to be true. For me Prince and Vanity appeared to have a special relationship based on their own sense of recognition of it. Whether it was ordained to be that way in the heavens I cannot say because it is beyond my knowledge. I cannot deny however that their lives paralleled or mirrored each other in ways beyond that of any other woman and Prince.

At any rate, I think we all understand your POV and thank you for sharing. But I doubt you will change anyone's beliefs, especially since in your world, there is not alot of meaning or emotional comfort to be had. And it might contradict the personal experience of some. The rational argument is kind of dead in the water, ie it makes discussions like this pointless.

I allow that earlier in life Prince may have felt that all women, including Vanity, were replaceable and expendable, much like his character in PR he had got along without others before and didn't need them. But if you look at the lyrics to his very recent song Revelation, he appears to now believe that there is a relationship that was meant to be, and hearkened back to ancient Egypt. It's only speculation because all lyrics are ambiguous but he seems to be saying time meant nothing because in a past life they were together.

Hello Beachy, My comment was a natural response to a contrasting opinion. This is not to take away from anyone who thinks their relationship remained special throughout his life, because those opinions are just as valid. I felt my response comment (above) was respectful and I didn't make any references to statements, song lyrics, or speculation to convince anyone into agreeing with me nor did I bring anyone's personal spiritual beliefs into it. And you are right, it is beyond our knowledge to know the answers which is why I tried to base my thoughts on things I felt were clear (to me, not in reference to everyone else) rather than events that were uncertain (again, just to me). I heard this one a couple of weeks ago. It's interesting that she laughs off the question intially and then says that there are friends that she talks to but that's a private matter. Then she lists the others by name.

This interview is from April of last year. Her health took the downturn in September (according to her FB) and she knew that the complication was fatal. I wonder if she called Prince and others and said her "goodbyes".

I am convinced they were in contact before she died, especially because he wasn't married and there just seems to be enough info out there that says they were in contact..and yes i believe they did speak before she died..maybe thats why he was so emotional at his concert the day after she died..thye must have exchanged their ''i love you'' and ''i'm sorry'' to one another..little did either know he'd be joinging her shortly...ugggggggh! My heart.
