As long as it's Morris Day & The Time aka "Part-Time", and NOT The Original 7ven (including Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis & Jesse Johnson), aka "Full-Time". Get it???

The difference is The Time is well known with the older R&B audience, with several R&B hits and 2 or 3 songs that crossed over to the pop Top 40. The Family is basically a 1 hit wonder in R&B. Few know who they are, so it doesn't matter if The Family have a new name. The gospel group called The Family is probably more well known than the other one. Morris & Jesse had some solo success and the Flyte Tyme crew produced many hits.

For some reason Prince seems to consider "Morris Day & The Time" an accptable name, at least for live shows, maybe simply because he wasn't able to take legal action in time to prevent them from touring under that name when they began to, and he just shrugged before the fait accompli. But he considers "The Time" his property.

My guess is that, for both The Time and The Family, Prince wishes to ensure his ownership of the Family masters, and hopes to claim the Time masters from WB when the 35 years law allows him to (since he wasn't able to get them back alongside his own albums), and that's why he claims the names. Allowing the bands to use their respective names may give them a right to claim the masters for themselves, but the fact that both bands backed off using the names is somewhat a tacit recognition of Prince's ownership of the concept. I would assume P's lawyers advised him in those matters.

Interestingly, Prince also deposed a copyight notice for the names Mazarati and Good Question in the mid-2000's, even though he had little to do with Mazarati and nothing to do with GQ. I believe this is also a way to ensure he'll keep ownership of those 2 albums' masters.

I saw two shows by the original line up on May 29-30 and my backstage pass says "The Original Time Band" There was active discussions backstage about what they were going to call themselves on the album and I thought some of their other suggestions were better that what they ended up using. Again the touring line up never stopped playing as I saw shows before and after the ones by the original line up that year.

I didn't remember that TO7 had reformed and toured before the album's release. Neither did I know that both bands coexisted. Having both The Time/The O7 and Morris Day & The Time touring at the same time is funny.

Live shows billed as The Time, okay, but I don't think new albums (if The Time records them) would be allowed to be called The Time.

I guess they've been called Mazarati from day 1. Not sure about their history: I think I've read Mark "discovered" them, not formed them from scratch, but in that case they must have been some sort of cover band playing in clubs, since they didn't seem to have a catalogue of their own songs and Mark ended-up writing their songs.
