Did anyone else BESIDES Prince program the Linn? On all of those side projects (The Time, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6) and Paisley Park (Sheila E., The Family) acts?

Ooh, I didn't know that. That's the illest pattern.

Do you have a source for this, because I've never been able to get to the bottom of who exactly programmed 777-9311? One version of the story I've occasionally heard is that the programming in that song is actually a preset pattern which was first programmed by Tower Of Power drummer Dave Garibaldi but I have no idea whether there's any element of truth at all to this. I'm pretty eager to find out, since as Cinny says that pattern is amazing, and I'd quite like to know who credit should be accorded to for it. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

David Z did the drum programming on "Kiss", not Maz. |

The "777-93-11 was a stock sound" comment seems to come from Jesse Johnson, see Princevault for info: [Edited 1/28/16 4:51am]

Yeah, "stock sound" wouldn't mean stock (demo) pattern. Just that the Linn had default sounds and he couldn't import his own sounds (like a sampler).

I would assume Sheila did at least some programming on her albums, though maybe not her debut album. Just like the white winged dove...

To add: Was "Alphabet St." a Linn pattern? Fairlight? Anyhoo, as stated in the liner notes to 'Lovesexy', Sheila E was the drummer. For me, it's one of the best programmed beats ever. Anyone know for sure who made it? i always thought it was Prince. not so sure now, though.
Prost! "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

Jesse claimed the beat from The Belle Of St. Mark was by him, or at least based on a programming he'd done on his own. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

For the record and once and for all: Mazarati was a Brownmark side project, not a Prince side project. Prince had virtually nothing to do with it and as said above it was produced by David Z anyway. And I think nearly everything on the album is live drums anyway. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

I don't think it was a linn but it was evidently a drum machine. The liner notes on Lovesexy are nonsense since the album was mostly a solo effort by Prince and they credit the band as playing on every track. Believe Princevault, not the booklet. Might be. With both Too Sexy and the video she posted as a reply to Purple And Gold in 2010, Sheila demonstrated that Prince has taught her well to program the Linn. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Yeah, the liner note credits always throw me off. I still don't believe what Princevault notes about 777-9311 but I'm also glad it wasn't omitted.

I don't know about you all, but I miss the Linn sounds in music today... even in Prince's latest releases. When did it go out of style????

Prince's involvement in Mazarati: - wrote "Kiss" on acoustic guitar. David Z and Mazarati then built it up to 90% of what Prince's final version sounds like, he took it back and finished it with David Z. - wrote and produced "Jerk Out", and Mazarati did a demo of this too, but it didn't make the cut for their album and then The Time took the song a few years later - rewrote the "Strawberry Lover" and "I Guess It's All Over" lyrics from the original songs which were called "Fear The Shadow" and "We Did It Our Way" respectively. |

I didn't remember him being involved in the look, it was the first Paisley Park release that wasn't a Prince side project, and the label's only release in 1986, so yeah he obviously kept a closer eye on it than on later PP releases.
