Dude, when? The Sheila E benefit Jamm,,,,when "have they been " performing songs all this time? as The Family or FDeluxe. How many tours have they done? How many concerts.....can you count them on more than 1 hand?

Please give me a number since I dont have a clue.

Paul has been performing them for most of his solo career.

on record:

DVD:

Your quote was "...and to come back 20+ years later and want to capitalize financially on the songs that P wrote is not legal w/out P's permission."

Obviously Paul had been performing those songs without any issue for some time now, so that is a moot point. If it was illegal he would have been busted for recording them and putting them on product for sale.

And I have no idea HOW many times he has performed them. But I would assume any time he has played outside of someone else's band.

Dude, I know Paul has probably performed them throughout his career live from time to time..,but you originally made the statement that, "THEY have been and ARE performing old family songs"..,,,I assumed THEY meant The Family....now your saying St Paul has been performing them. Changing your story I see. Thats cool. Bottomline is I do know the HISTORY behind The Family, Ive heard the Prince demo cuts & even still have the cassette copy of their album I bought back in 1985. So dont tell me I dont have a clue.

lol...also they have done the Fam Jamm as you said and also as a group last year in Minneapolis. You mentioned the words LEGALLY and that was what I was responding to. CLEARLY that is not an issue. So I wasn't changing my story, I just made my post a bit broader than I should have. They WILL be performing the old songs, they have been asking which songs people want to hear on their facebook site. It's hard to perform as a band when the artists in question were either performing solo or with other bands (including Princes). I've heard all that stuff too, but that has nothing to do with your assertion that they "want to capitalize financially on the songs that P wrote is not legal w/out P's permission." That is the item of which you appeared to have no clue.

yeahthat

For the record, we ALL could "capaitlaize financially on the songs P wrote . . ." if we felt like that. For those actually reading these threads, anyone can perform any song in a live setting as long as you pay the performance royalty.

Selling a physical recording is another story. I think you need permission, or at the last the writer can block it later if he wants....can't remember now. I sort of remember that for phyiscal recordings the copyright holder can block it, which is strange that Prince is bitching about people playing doing covers of his songs on CDs since I'm pretty sure he could block it if he wanted.

In fact, that was kind of implied as ot why there was no release of the Family Jamm.

So for what has been stated here:

  • Prince's people suing them for naming their album after their original name so they changed the title.
  • Prince doesn't have copyright over "The Family", it's in the copyright of Warner Bros.
  • I hope Prince still doesn't have a grudge with St. Paul and nem but it's looking like it. But damn, that was like 1986, wow.
  • The Family/FDeluxe have done concerts together for a while but it wasn't until recently that they started working on albums.
  • Again the Prince fans against the Prince critics once again. lol

Am I missing anything? drink
