Yes, I believe it was and it's VERY rare and VERY valuable among collectors.

There were only Japanese and German pressings of the CD, so in the US it was even relatively expensive at the time of release. I paid $20 as a Japanese import back in the day.

Here's hoping that the reunion of The Family goes well and convinces the powers that be at Warner Music to re-release The Family's self-titled debut album from 1985 (and since they recently reiussed The Time's "Pandamonium" and Sheila E.'s "Romance 1600", "Sheila E." & "Sex Symbol", there is reason to hope).

Unless you're that nerdy fan/self appointed spokesperson for the 'band' (let's face it, Prince WAS the band, they just lent some vocals to one of his side-projects), then why give a crap about this? The one true ingredient that made The Family album worthy isn't involved with this desperate attempt reclaim some former half-lived glory.

It'd be like a Time album without any Prince involvement. Apart from 3 or 4 fanatics, who'd give a flying fuck??

Without Prince's involvement, it simply ain't a Family album. Simple maths: No Prince-penned songs + No Prince music\direction = No Point!

tsk tsk. Negativity for no reason.

Rude comments is why some of former Prince associates left the org or refused to come here, and while some of them preferred Housequake when it was still around because those comments was not tolerated. Did ya momma told you if you dont have nothing nice to say not say anything at all? Susannah looks damn good for being 45 much better looking than some of the 25 ppl or ppl who are around my age under 30. Paul is fine too and he is fitted and sexy. They have chemistry and admired each other. Some of Yall better be on your best behavior when Wendy/Lisa comes on the org doing their first interview here or you will answer to me.

But anyhoo I cant wait until the Family released their album. Looong overdo. I am looking forward to their tour and I hope they get something work out. I also hope some of their more well-known fans participate that would help W/L and the Family gain further exposure.

Another well thought out doosy of an argument...
So from this post we learn that it will be a good album because Susannah and Paul are good looking... Apart from it being the most shallow/empty/vacant post of the week, it also seems to lack more than a little logic...
Yes, they were chosen to front the first album primarily because of looks. But, the reason that album was so good was because of the music, the production, the vibe, the direction etc... ALL provided by Prince - the one truely important ingrediant that will be missing from this next album.
But... OOOOH, we'll have a couple of pretty looking (for there LATE 40's) front people.... Ummmmm, real good reason to dribble over an albums potential - bound to make it a classic

HEY LET'S GET BACK ON TOPIC AND JUST BE GLAD AN AWESOME GROUP OF TALENTED ASS PEOPLE ARE MAKING AN ALBUM INDEPENDENT OF PRINCE AND WE GET ANOTHER FAMILY CD.

Because the others sure haven't followed up with anything that exciting.

Can you back up the 'AWESOME GROUP OF TALENTED ASS PEOPLE' claim. What have any of them done musically, outside of Prince(controlled and dominated)World, that proves any said 'talent'? I mean Yes obviously Eric Leeds is Way talented, although who knows of his true involvement in the project. But Susannah and Paul (apart from being 'good looking for their age') and Jerome??...
Is this really the makings of an undiscovered power trio of musical geniuses about to dominate and awe the world with their musical prowess? (without the help of Prince in the period of his creative prime?) .
Ahhhmm....
Yea, maybe wink

Am I missing something? What's the big deal about The Family? They never had a hit, and they released 1 album.

The Family's one album was not a consumer hit in any way, but it stands as one of Prince's best side projects ever. The release of the project broke new ground for Prince. It was the first time that he worked with Clare Fischer, a man that would set the bar for the beautiful orchestration on Paisley Park albums. The LP had arguably, some of Prince's finest writing and arranging in the pop genre. Lush instrumentation, melody on top of melody and a refined take on the Minneapolis Sound made this eponymous record an instant classic for Prince many fans.

Eric Leeds, Susannah and St. Paul had fairly minor roles in the overall production of The Family, but they brought it to life with their unique touches.

The new record is really turning out to be an extension of that late-eighties gem. At least that's what it sounds like to me so far. Time will tell.

True. Now take the word Prince (and all reference to his involvement and writing, arranging, production, spirit and creativity) out of the above post - and what are you left with? A couple of good looking hired singers and a 'band' to be photographed for an album cover...
The Family album was essentially Prince testing the waters and trying ideas out that would eventually evolve into his Parade album. It was a Prince album every step of the way.
The next Family 2.0 album will have the same faces on the cover (25 years older), with music made by a couple of people who were lucky enough to once have an album given to them by Prince, who are now making music in their garage trying their best to recapture the hype & magic from a moment in their life 25 years ago...
I wish them luck, but i wont for a second hold my breath and believe they can recapture the magic that they experienced thanks to a 26 year old musical genius in his creative prime phase - even Prince would be hard-pressed to produce anything like that now, even for himself...
Just keepin' it real people...

Clearly you have not listened to any of the new material. I was skeptical too, but I am won over by what I hear.
I will say though that your understanding of Paul and Susannah's careers is rather lacking. Both have gone on to very successful careers as writers and Paul as a player for many many varied projects, including his own. Eric clearly contributed his input as well as Clare Fisher giving it a unique sound. So as much as you want to believe it was all Prince, you are clearly dead wrong.

Don't hold your breath. Not worth it. Those of us who dig good music and don't have a Prince filter on day and night will enjoy the gift we're gonna get when this album drops.

I thought I was "keepin' it real" in my post. I haven't over-stated the involvement of the bit-players on the Family project. I do like what they brought to the table back then, and I get a good vibe from what I heard thus far on their new endeavor.

lol. You'll get used to it quick. There is a contingent of people who can't let anything just be what it is. And then you can get sucked into arguing to some extent. I do try not to, but when people just completely miss a point or leave out huge hunks of the story, I can't help myself. Opinions are one thing, misinformation is another.

Then how come you leave out Eric and Clare's involvement in the album that you claim Prince did all by himself? Or Bobby Z's track?? For the sake of honesty that is. I'm just sayin'....

It's pretty easy to tell that the songs they have so far are really great and DO capture much of that vibe from the first cd while being contemporary. I was REALLY skeptical at first, but I was proven very wrong.
Unless of course they use none of the songs that they have recorded and broadcast for fans for the final cd...and I suppose that is possible lol

Exactly. And people forget that Susannah and Paul are both songwriters, Paul is an accomplished musician in his own right, as is Bean and Eric. His family sweats music. His 83 year old mother can still play anyone around here under the table. He produced and played all over Oleta Adams new CD that was just released. And with folks like Doyle Bramhall II, Wendy and Lisa on the album, I think this CD is going to rival the first. Will it trump it? Who knows, that's all in a personal definition of taste. But I don't see how anyone will NOT be able to sit still during "Drummers and Healers" when they hear it in a few months.

That nobody slag off american idol is 'apparently' a songwriter too - wake up and realise it takes more than a 'songwriter' (im sure all of on the org can claim 'songwriter' credit) to make a legendary album...
Seriously, lets not all be Bozo the halfwitted clown here - before we claim brilliance on this (non-prince) project: lets wait till its released before we all have a dumbed-down, "better than Prince involved Family album" response.

You know it aint in the slightest bit likely....

Here's my challenge/bet! I believe the unreleased 82/83 Prince cover/remake 'Do Yourself A Favour' will be better overall (its a fricken classic!) than the whole tryhard Family 2.0

Step.

I think you're beyond rude with your statement. I've seen Susannah in the live studio streams they have opened up to fans, plus a two hour live video Q&A. She's far from haggarded. She's still gorgeous. And Paul has lost a lot of weight and gotten in shape. He actually did the P90X thing and swears by it. He's ripped nowadays.

This ain't haggered.

then why bother posting here? Just to crack on the new project and anyone who thinks it is good? You still never addressed your point about others involvement in the first one (and suspect you won't cause you were wrong). WE get it! You don't like the Family as a concept unless Prince is involved.
