Next you're going to defend him for not letting Sheila release the Family Jamm on video or CD? That was a real generous, charitable move.

-----
For all you know he may have donated money to her charity. Considering he has worked with her a few times since then I would think she was okay with his non-direct particpation in project.

Actulaly, I know he did contribute money to her charity. That's not the point.

The point is she was not allowed to broadcast or sell recordings of the songs he owns publishing for, which could have earned even more money for th charity.

This is pointless though. Clearly you will defend anything he does.

I'm beginning to think the problem a lot of these folks have is that Prince's music does not fall under Public Domain and they think it should be for some strange reason. shrug

Lets put this into perspective. As far as I'm concerned the only band P put together that has proven anything is The Time.
The Family is not some Legendary Band people.
They had 1 album which was actually a Prince album, he completed it first and then had Paul sing over it.
How many tours do they do? Any more albums?
How much success since then?
They are not in Prince's league by any stretch of the imagination.
P put them together and created their name.
If he don't want them using it, cool. They can go by Family2.0
or whatever.

not in Princes league? By what measure - past or present work? Skill? Songwriting ability? That's just a dumb statement. Paul can play multiple instruments as well, and could be as well or better than Prince - do YOU know? What I'm hearing from the new song - at least they know WHAT made that stuff work and can bring the flavor along with solid writing chops (you do realize Susannah has written and worked with other high profile artists artists?).
IMO Prince has lost any idea of what made him the original he was, rather than a guy that has got a whole lot of skills and a great back catalogue of music. Not that there's anything WRONG with that wink

Your kidding right? Prince is an all Pro/SUperbowl/Hall of Fame athlete
the others are minor league.
IN 7 MEASURES.

No not really. But the "prince should let friends and former associates do whatever they want with his music" theme is typical of the folks who are bitter fan holdover's from the 80's. lol

Uhhhh... not quite.

Who said "do whatever they want with his music?" I was referring to a charity event by one if his longest standing friends, with proceeds going to a charity he already supports.

Moreover, the people playing said music were the ones who played it originally and were playing it true to his vision. Not bastardizing it or changing it.

So your lame attempt at a comeback actually makes no sense. And if anyone is bitter, it sure isn't me.

How about a serious, rational reason why he wouldn't give permission to sell recordings of the for charity?

I was talking about the overall theme of folks banging on Prince because he won't let xxx past bandmember, or xxx old girlfriend use his music to promote whatever it is they're doing now. It matters not if it's a charity, especially since in the Angel Bunny event or whatever Sheila was doing he donated cold hard cash. Which in the case of that charity that's what was needed --- $$$ not a dvd that may or maynot sell.

And frankly just because said old friends or bandmembers participated in playing on the songs doesn't mean they should get an automatic pass to use his material. If they actually helped write the songs then shame on them for not suing his ass years ago for their share of the copyright entitlement. If they were employed as session musicians at that time their participation was employer to employee end of story.

I'm not familiar with former bandmembers wanting to use his music to promote themselves.....

But I still think the Family Jamm thing was just spiteful. Yes he donated cash which is why it's crazy he wouldn't let Sheila release the DVD. I mean....why the f*ck not??? What is the point other than spite?? Yes, as the copyright owner it's his legal right..... but what is the point??? It seems petty and spiteful.

No one has yet to give a rational reason why he wouldn't want Sheila to be allowed to sell those DVDs. Saying "it's his music he can do what he wants" is true but it still doesn't answer the question.

And in terms of people performing his music, he actually cannot control that. Anyone can cover anything as long as they pay the performance royalty. the problem is when you then try to sell it as a recording.

Maybe there's a lot of beef behind the scenes with all those involve. Perhaps slurs and insults were thrown back and forth and maybe Prince said fuck it, let them sell their own music. I know its charity but I get the feeling Prince's relationship with his past associates are very strained and that could be the reason why he made that decision (and didn't show up either). shrug

I put the question out here to the people who keep defending his every move.

No one has yet to suggest a rational reason why he wouldn't let the Family Jamm be sold on DVD etc.

I've already stated it is his right to not allow it. The question is why not?

Your reply is just yet another example of a lemming-like fam just defending without actually trying to provide any logical, rational reasoning to the discourse.

You're probably the type who sent in his bootlegs to Paisley Park when he asked you to do that too. Oh wait, you probably never had any because he told you not to get them.

What is a rational reason you could think of that Prince would not give permission to sell DVDs of the Family Jamm? I'm serious. The reason I ask is because the only one I can come up with is pettiness and spite and I'd prefer not think of hi that way

So..... seriously.... what is a rational answer?

Reply #131 you just repeat what I already state..... "it's his music". I already stated that upfront. That is not in question.

The question is, given that it's his right to not allow, WHY would he not allow it??? WHY choose not to?

I'll just say this about the Family Jamm dvd or whatever they wanted to do. I don't really think it had anything to do with people involved per se. As far as him owning the Time moniker, it doesn't seem so cut & dry since those guys were together(Flyte Time) before his involvement. At least that was my understanding of it

No it is not a typical fam response. Some people on this board seem to think that former associates and protegees have carte blanche to do what they want with this music. They do not and would not if anyone else owned the copyright.

P is really no different than companies that own copyrights. If they do not want you using the material you can't use it. End of story.
