Classic Sheila E., Time reissues due 7/29

Check out the upcoming releases on WB's Rhino Records Web site:

http://www.rhino.com/stor...ming.lasso

Hitting the shelves on July 29 will be the following releases:

Sheila E – Romance 1600 (Encore)

Sheila E – Sex Cymbal (Encore)

Sheila E – Sheila E (Encore)

The Time – Pandemonium (Encore)

Interesting that three out of these four selections are Paisley Park titles, eh? Could the likes of Jill Jones and The Family be far away....? hmmm

Cool (even though I have all of these except Pandemonium). I wonder why they chose Sex Cymbal instead of The Glamorous Life? I wish they would include the b-sides. I vote for reissues of Apollonia 6 and Mazarati.

i don't think glamorous life is out of print. it is in desperate need of remastering, but i think it's still easy to find in shops.

i would be surprised if these four titles get a fancy reissue treatment other than maybe a few extra pics in the liner notes booklets. if we get extra tracks, essays, etc., i'll be happily surprised.

Does WB have to work with PP to release these or did Warners "own" all PP releases during this time? I mean, they owned Prince even though he was released under PP. shrug

edit cause I think I answered my own question...

Does the "Encore" imply bonus material? I love the "Shelia E." album (disliked "Romance 1600") and if it has extra stuff I would buy it again. I look forward to picking up "Pandemonium" and "Sex Cymbal".

i think "Encore" is a division of Rhino Records - in other words, just another record label name.

i think "Encore" is a sub-label of Rhino.

I don't think these will be remastered nor do i think there will be bonus tracks. If they put that much effort into it, I would assume they'd put a little more promotion behind these releases. But I could be wrong!

Yeah, they haven't done any promotion. They haven't even put the album covers up, which is odd. If you look on Amazon, you can still buy a new copy of Romance 1600; the Rhino edition is listed there too, but it's blank, with no cover or reviews or anything.

Betcha this is gonna be another huge disappointment. Remastered? Doubtful. Liner notes? Could be, but IMHO probably lame an uninformative. Bonus tracks? Totally unlikely.

Let's see what Amazon knows:

http://www.amazon.com/Pan...001BPB1GU/
http://www.amazon.com/Rom...001BPB1G0/
http://www.amazon.com/She...001BPB1GK/
http://www.amazon.com/Sex...001BPB1GA/

Yeah. The lack of information speaks volumes.

Why just these albums? None of those are hard to find.

How 'bout the Mazarati album? Jill Jones? The two Madhouse albums? Eric Leeds' albums? http://en.wikipedia.org/w...iscography I've got just about everything on that list, but I'd really love good remasters and a bunch of extras, like remixes and outtakes and unseen artwork and pictures etcetera. Hell, what about entire unreleased albums?

Why can't someone talk sense into Prince and make him realize that he's got so much great stuff stored away in that pointless vault of his? And if it goes against his principles, then there's a simple solution: get rid of all of it, and send the profits to a decent charity. (As if these things will ever be profitable. It's not like there's a huge market for these.)

I agree. It's ridiculous that an artist of P's stature has such a shoddily handled catalog and that includes all his satellite work. I don't understand how some of these titles are out-of-print. You can buy an obscure album that sells 12 copies a year but not albums that sold 100,000 to 2 mil?

I know Prince's fight with WB has created this problem, and he does not want to became a artist dwelling in nostalgia and oldies, but give me a break!

There will be a proper release at some point (including remastering) of his entire catalog. Has WB ever commented on the tragic state of his past catalog. Why are his albums out-of-print?

If there really was a market, they'd be re-released. Who's going to buy these - no-one, that's who.

A smarter move would be to stick them on iTunes or something.

well, a lot of people weren't hip the first time around, so it saves them the ridiculous eBay asking prices. i think it's a good thing - "romance 1600" and "sheila e" are really good albums. thumbs up!

Im checking my cd's of these right now, but im remembering that Prince does NOT have any credits of writing on these albums? That may be the reason that only these are coming out, he has credits on all the other Time and Shelia records but i dont think he had any actual credits on these, though he is on "Love Bizarre"

Do you really think people are going to shell out money to see Prince in concert if he does not play any of his hits eek

I also think that the remastering and reissues are up to WB they own the master tapes not P.

Prince does have writing credits on "Pandemonium". There's tracks he wrote on there like "Data Bank" and "Jerk Out". I tracked this one down on eBay a couple of years ago, so unless the re-release has anything different, I don't need it.

I'll definately be copping those Sheila E re-releases though.

Ah sweet Laura, always defending her Princey. Yeah, let's ignore that other artists manage to ignore their hits just fine while touring. Radiohead is now touring and they're playing virtually nothing from their EMI years. And in the past years Bruce Springsteen has gotten major critical props for touring and playing not his hits but his latest album or instead handing over control to fans who can request just about any song from his back catalogue. And guess what? THEY STILL SELL OUT LARGE VENUES. But then those guys are actually artists, and not money-hungry weasels like Prince has been for over a decade.

sigh...

Is it so bloody hard to actually read the credits? More specifically, look at the publishing companies. Here, lemme help you: tunes that Prince wrote for Sheila were usually registered to Girlsongs. When Prince writes for The Time, those songs are registered to Tionna Music.

Lemme quote from something I wrote nearly a decade and a half ago:

But even if the band members are reluctant to admit Prince's involvement in the album, the evidence that he played a major part in it is all over the place -- especially in the liner notes. After all, why would The Time record their reunion album in studios like Paisley Park and Sunset Sound (one of Prince's favorite studios), when some members own themselves renowned recording studios? Jimmy Jam and Tery Lewis own Creation and Flyte Tyme Productions, and Jesse Johnson has Jungle Love.

Let's also not forget that the liner notes to Pandemonium claim all songs were "produced, arranged and written by The Time", and that could be a cryptic way of giving Prince credit. Doesn't he own the rights to the name "The Time", the group he created and molded?

On top of that, five songs are registered with Tionna Music, the publishing company Prince always uses when composing for (or with) The Time: "Jerk Out", "Donald Trump (Black Version)", "Chocolate", "Data Bank" and "My Summertime Thang". It is now generally acknowledged Prince has (co-)written these five songs, and was very likely involved in the recording and the production of them.

Prince's involvement in Romance 1600 has been documented by Per Nilsen:

http://www.uptown.se/2005...o_22.shtml

Prince's involvement in Romance 1600 was clarified in Per Nilsen's exhaustive article on Sheila E. in UPTOWN #20. Regardless of what the credits on the album say (or how the songs are registered at ASCAP), Prince did write all the songs on the album, barring "Merci For The Speed Of A Mad Clown In Summer," and he played most instruments and produced the album for Sheila. The album was recorded while on the Purple Rain tour, at studios in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Atlanta and Los Angeles (Sunset Sound). The only exception is "Merci For The Speed Of A Mad Clown In Summer," which Sheila composed and recorded with her own musicians after the Purple Rain tour. It was the last track added to the album.

It really isn't hard to figure these things out.
