And Prince is dating white women or non black women as usual. I think Halle Berry is darker than he appears to like his biracial women that seems to be the only type of black woman he dates(biracial) and he doesn't even date biracial women that often. I am a big Prince fan but it is obvious that he seems to stay away from black women.

NOT. Halle is not Prince's type. She does not even have sex appeal - in my opinion. There's a difference in being beautiful - which she is a BEAUTIFUL woman - & having sex appeal. Everyone just doesn't have it - sex appeal that is...but she's absolutely GORGEOUS.

I know Halle is biracial that is why I said in my response that she is darker than he appears to like his biracial women...by saying that I acknowledged that she is biracial but she is to dark for him... I also agree with the earlier post that she is to old for him.

Marvin Gaye's daughter... well according to her he did not treat her well and I think her mother is biracial, and probably the fact that she was Marvin Gaye's daughter was a big attraction, I don't think that anyone can find any other black woman who is not biracial that Prince has dated or was rumored to be dating. I am not hating on Prince but I just noticed that this just seems to be his preference and it is a free country, and I think you should be with whoever makes you happy...

I don't think that either Robin Power or Susan Moonsie are bi-racial. Prince also reportedly dated Cat, who is clearly not bi-racial. If U look hard enough, U will find a few sistas in his history.

Isn't Mani biracial? I think he's tended to date biracial or biracial-appearing women more than anything.

Although, Prince has dated or tried to date some black women. Is Susan from Vanity 6 biracial? Kim from Purple Rain wasn't biracial. Neither was Nona Gaye. Also, I don't recall Nona saying that Prince treated her poorly during their relationship, other than the end being jacked up. Why do people need to find a reason for Prince to have dated Nona other than her being a stunning woman?

And we all know he had a thing for Patrice Rushen who is not biracial either. Kenya Moore mentioned how he called her to tell her how beautiful he thought she was. I think he has mixed it up - Latin, black, bi-racial, white, but his preference tends to be biracial (black/white) mixed women who resemble him. Although, he is not biracial. I can't knock him, because I tend to date men who resemble me also.

Oh and to respond to the OP, I would NEVER want to see Prince with Halle. She's just annoying to me. Besides, I think he likes to find his own women outside of the public eye. Kim Bassinger was really the only well known woman whom he dated.

What is a traditional African American?

Also, many black Trinidadians share the same mixed racial heritage as African Americans. They just ended up in Trinidad instead of America.

Lastly, I thought Robin Power stated that her mother was mixed, not her. Maybe I am mistaken. Regardless, because of the history of racial mixing in the Americas and the Caribbean, it is not always easy to discern whether a "black" person is mixed based on physical attributes. Prince, himself, exemplifies this. People accepted the story of him being biracial based on his appearance, but as we all know he is not biracial. However, as is the case with most blacks in America he is simply the product of generations of mixing. This is why people who think that there is a "traditional African American" based on physical attributes are often mistaken about whether someone is biracial or not.

Gosh, I don't want to start a dialogue about this subject... but accepting that THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS TO EVERY RULE...
when a "traditional African American talks about "perming" their hair... they are talking about permanent relaxer (straightener), not a "tony" perm (curly).
Most would trace their roots back to the interior of African continent, not a tropical island, northern tip of Africa (really middle eastern region), and most would not be closely related or associated to anyone from an island, south america or non African. People who come from or are closely related to from those excluded regions would rightfully clarify their distinction... Jamicans, Haitians, Trinidadians... etc don't refer to themselves as simply African Americans.. for the most part they will retain their identity with native country and culture. If the "traditional" African American does have other ancestory (such as european) they would identify that they are "bi-racial" acknowledging that they are a mixture of "traditional African American" and something else.
African Americans are for the most part African with varying degrees of mixture from European (from slavery era) and Native American. Makes sense because these were the major races of people in early United States. (Imperial Great Britian, the natives of the land ...Native Americans, and the slaves from Africa that the British brought with them to help "settle" the new land.

Jamiacans, Haitians, and other islanders may also have strong racial mixing from Spaniards. Makes sense because many of these islands were at one time inhabited or ruled by Spaniards.

Please don't flame me because you know of an isolated case of your cousin, or yourself who have 2 black parents and have blond hair blue eyes... We all know what went down during slavery. We all know how genes can be unpredictable. I am talkning about 80% African Americans that I know or come in contact with.
And back to the my original statement....
Susan Moonsie although may have identified with Black American (what we called ourselves back in those days smile ) came from some island or South America. Maybe Brazil... I just remembered how surprised I was because although her hair was thick, long and naturally curly, her skin color was darker than what I expected from the island.

(note:) I just looked on the internet... her family comes from Venezuela. I don't know about you... but that is not the "traditional" or average African American.

i know i probably missed this somewhere in previous posts, but can we even substantiate that he dated Robin Power. with that body, i'm not in the least bit surprised, but just never heard that. same for Cat, i hope we're not assuming just because she was his dancer he dated her. he probably DID her, but there's a difference.

Robin herself stated on this site that she dated Prince for 2years and I remeber and interview with Sheila E where she was asked if she dated Prince and she stated "No, he likes Cat." Why is it always questioned when Prince dates black women???

And as far as Susan Moonsie being from Trinidad or wherever.....I remember having this same conversation with a Mexican friend about whether or not Sammy Sosa was black. She was adamant that he was not black, but Latino. I told her that Sosa is a black man with a Spanish accent, like I'm a black woman with an American accent. Our ancestors got scooped up from the same place, they just ended up on different boats. There were actually more Africans taken to Brazil than to north America, however many choose not to identify themselves as black, whereas in north America, most folks that have any amount of African blood will identify themselves as black. I don't care what part of Latin America Susan Moonsie is from, she is still black and always looked like a "traditional african-american" to me....whatever that means.

I really don't understand your point. Of course Jamaicans, Trinidadians, Haitians, etc. would not identify themselves as African American, because they are not American. What does nationality have to do with race?

Also, I don't know what skin color has to do with hair texture or anything else. Trinidadians and Venezuelans range in color from the lightest to the darkest just like folks on any other island. My hair stylist's family is Trinidadian and they are dark.

Finally, I don't know what the "80%" of blacks you know look like, but my black family and friends vary in skin color, physical features, hair textures, etc. and we all identify as black. My family is Barbadian, African-American (black), Scottish and Native American. Some people who have a myopic view of what blacks look like question our heritage, but that is due to their limited exposure or ignorance. At the end of the day, the vast majority of African Americans, Afro-Latinos and Afro-Caribbeans are a mixture of different races and it reveals itself in different ways. So, I am confused as to why someone would be surprised at a dark-skinned Trinidadian or Venezuelan with long, thick naturally curly hair. But now I know why so many people ask me if my hair is real. rolleyes

I am not flaming you, so please don't take it that way. I am just confused by your assertions.

Note: There are black Venezuelans who share a similar African/Indian/Eurpoean mixture as many "traditional or average African Americans," as you define them. The only difference is that the European component of that mixture is typically Spanish for Venezuelans while it is British for African Americans. So again, your point is lost on me.

That is my point... most AA that I know have different degrees of color due to the mixture of African, Native American, and European.
But not as many are mixed with Spanish descent. and THAT is the distinction I was talking about.

As far as people asking if your hair is real... with so many high quality weaves out there, it is no wonder people ask if your hair is real. biggrin
