All us "mixed" girls are a little bit
nuts...( razz j/k..well..kinda)

confused You know, I'm always saying this even though I do know better than to make such a generalization. I think a lot of "mixed" folks may have some racial identity issues simply because you may be rejected or ridiculed on some level by either or both "races" of which you're made up of, like Bob Marley was. So it's like, "Where do I fit in???" It's uncool and unfair but true. And Halle and Mariah don't help the case against the "nuts" theory. sigh

Regarding our other "race" thread about Marianne Pearl I think she's a prime example of some of these "issues" and I'm basing that on some very superficial information. http://www.prince.org/msg/105/229029

Read the book "Mixed" by Angela Nissel. It was one of the best books I've ever read and sometimes it was hilarious, sometimes sad, insightful and well written.

I don't think it is a bad thing to recognize that children from parents from two different races might need a little different kind of understanding or sensitivity. I think we all can remember how cruel some kids can be and how improtant fitting in can be at a young age.

oooo, this reminds me of something my grandmother used to say... "wasted yella"

eek
Someone who has pretty cafe au lait complexion, wavy hair, light eyes, but horrible, bucked teeth or tiny rat teeth, or huge honker, or no chin.

& this is how it continues -- not digging @ you, just saying -- "pretty" as opposed to WHAT? wink

I know the "wasted yella" isn't yours (it's your grandmom's), but it's learned to describe that particular complexion as "pretty" - it IS pretty, but so is brown, deep chocolate & blue black! & if they're ALL recognized as pretty, WHY the description?? smile

twocents

shrug
I don't know why those folks were color struck. They were. Living in the south in the 40's and 50's my mom learned that light skinned was better... better opportunities, better shopping experiences... just better everything.
I think her and my grandmother, both the shade of a brownie coveted the lighter skin. caramel brown was considered a pretty shade... sort of like caucasians tanning, these people have that golden brown color all the time.
Pretty and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
My eyes doesn't think buck teeth are pretty, or tiny rat teeth, or a huge honker nose.
these are all features that are not in proportion. *I* don't find them attractive. If I had buck teeth, I would get braces, and many people do.

sigh

Oh and in my statement the term "pretty" meant no blemishes, no acne, no discoloration of the color. I really did mean pretty cafe au lait.
I have been told that I have "pretty" skin tone as well. I am pecan brown. I have even, smooth skin. I think this is what is meant by "pretty" cafe au lait.

Queen Latifah has pretty brown skin tone.
get it? smile

Wow,this thread reminded me of this show on Tvone I was watching "Black Men Revealed"...omg,I remember one episode that made me livid.Yo,I was pissed 4 days and I still get pissed about it.This guy had the nerve 2 say that he preferred lightskinned women over darker skinned women because darkerskinned women act different...in a negative way.He said something about darkskinned women having more attitude and being hard and complicated.Ummmm,So...all darkskin women act the same and all lightskin act the same 2.The thing I dont get is dude was black as night so Im pretty sure his mama and dad are darkskinned, and I think he even commented on his whole family being dark complected.

Girl, I watch that damn show & for the life of me I don't know WHY lol They piss me off SO MUCH sometimes. I remember the show you're talking about & I had this sinking feeling like, "damn, here mf's go reinforcing THAT shit again!" It's so fucking sad, I really don't think I'll see the end of it (or a serious turning of the tide) in my lifetime sad WHY do people buy into the bullshit??? wall

NOT. Halle is not Prince's type. She does not even have sex appeal - in my opinion. There's a difference in being beautiful - which she is a BEAUTIFUL woman - & having sex appeal. Everyone just doesn't have it - sex appeal that is...but she's absolutely GORGEOUS.
[Edited 5/22/07 20:33pm]

can I have some of what u r smokin? eek

lol I know what this person means though - Halle is gorgeous & I would describe her as sexy LOOKING, BUT she seems kinda stiff & cold for some reason... Maybe I'm just holding her bad relationships against her or something shrug

when you step "in it" you better be ready to go the distance or give the wrong impression.
More than anything I don't want to be misunderstood. So if it takes a few pages to get my point across and understand yours... so be it. cool

I think it turned into a great thread. Especially since Prince AND Halle have dealt with/discussed issues of race and color throughout their entire careers and personal lives it seems natural that the conversation would turn to those matters here as well. smile

Is that why not too many sistas have posted their picture in the "Prince's Third Wife, If You're BADD enough to be his next Wife post a photo!" thread? I guess some of us know we don't have a snowball chance in hell of being Prince's 3rd wife if we don't pass the test. lol

yep. Many posted pics look like Prince's type, caramel skin tone, long straight dark hair, dark eyes.

But I don't get the feeling that the brothas on the org have similiar discriminating tastes... maybe I don't know which orgers are male and female

I luv dark skinned women, always have, always will. What theyre saying about the backhanded compliments and general bs they go through is real.
