NightGod said: Hi Michael,
Ok, I finally thought of a question... I'd read somewhere years ago that you practice close to 8 hours a day, is that or was that true? Also, when you practice, do you still work on fundamentals or do you make your practicing something more musical? It's something I saw Victor Wooten talk about, and I figure someone with your abilities has got to have a special routine to keep it interesting. Thanks again for your time and talents, Jace [Edited 3/13/06 18:24pm] when i was talking about the 8 hour practicing, i meant with prince.. rehearsing, in general, was a minimum of 8 hours a day.. i don't think i could keep my own interest for 8 hours straight.. i don't really practice alone, at least not in a conventional sense.. alot of my musical growth occurs away from the instrument. i will sometimes visualize playing something i've never played before, hours or days before i actually sit down at a set of drums.. i guess i DO practice, but mostly in my mind.. i keep it musical by keeping it spontaneous. i never wanted to be one of those cats that knew every single thing he was gonna play before the gig even started.. also, i keep it musical by keeping my emphasis on listening to the players around me.. i concern myself with the drums, lastly.. prince used to always say, "be more interested in what your neighbor is playing, than what you're playing..".. and he was right.. listening is the key.. or maybe "practicing" listening.. michael b.

Of all the drummers Prince has had in his band, you are probably my favourite. I love your playing style. That heavy drum sound is so cool it makes me want to learn how to play drums properly (guitar is my main instrument, though I've played drums in concert 2-3 times).... I also hope to be able to go to MPLS one day (maybe later this year) and see your band live.... Anywho, I've got two questions for you: First, how would you rate Prince's drumming skills? Secondly, do you think your playing style has influenced Prince's drumming? The reason I ask this is because the beat in the song "A Million Days" (from 'Musicology') has a kind of "Michael B feel" to it, hard to explain.... however I have to say the drum sound in that track is bit "muddy" compared to your sound from the NPG days.... Peace, David G. i think prince is a great drummer.. he's not very powerful, but he's really inventive, has great feel, and great time.. his drumming has had a lasting influence on how i play, and most likely, vice versa.. the track you speak of, i'm not familiar with.. thank you for your kind words, man.. michael b.

Yes those must have been pretty crazy times for all of you, the whole name change period. Do you think this deterred a lot of people (not talking about the fans here 'cos they were gonna listen anyway) from actually paying attention to the music that Prince was creating at this time, it got to crazy for some.
You know 'Diamonds & Pearls' to me is a very uplifting album, come away feeling good after listening to it. Even songs with a serious topic like 'Money Don't Matter', every time I play that song is just like the first time, still get the same feeling. This in a way I guess defines a classic tune, if you can get something new from it everytime you listen to it then you know the lasting power is there.

The tour guide noted that it was the only photo of a former band that Prince had on display in the entire studio and he kept it up because he said it was the group that he had the most fun with. I must admit, there was a certain "aura," or personality that surrounded that particular group of players.

ebonyrhythmbuddha said: babynoz said: Wow, thanks for the cool stories Michael B. It's such a refreshing change from the "I want Prince's ta-tas" threads. 2 more questions if you don't mind. What type of books do you read? I've heard you say a couple things that the average person doesn't and that led me to think you might be into philosophy? What's the one thing you learned with Prince that you couldn't have learned anywhere else? I wish you were coming to Miami, but I suppose I'll just have to make my way to Minnie instead. i did read alot of existential literature and philosophy, from my junior year in high school until my sophomore year in college. i liked dostoevsky, and friedrich nietzsche alot.. hard reads, though.. i didn't realize that remnants of that were coming out in my meanderings, here on the org.. one thing i learned with prince hat i couldn't have learned anywhere else.. he used to say "don't be sorry.. be sure.." whenever we would make mistakes and try to apologize.. some people in other musical environments i've encountered have been alot less hostile and less serious about their craft... prince taught me that excellence is chess, not checkers.. whenever i sit down behind a set of drums, i'm expecting something spectacular to happen.. i don't know if i could have learned to expect so much from myself, under anyone else's tutelage.. michael b. Ha! I knew it. Actually it was something you said in an interview awhile back and it stuck with me because it was out of the ordinary. Hard reads? That's an understatement. I haven't dealth with existentialism since college. I got A's in Philosophy though. I can totally visualize the Prince you describe. I imagine it must have been challenging, exciting, exhausting and fun all at the same time. The results speak for themselves. You guys remain my favorite Prince band of all time. Thanks. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY 7 i speak to barbarella all the time.. we have worked together on a few records, since the npg days.. and we both have worked on and off with giorgia, an italian artist.. so, we even travel the world together still, sometimes. my favorite time with her was during 2002-2003, when the band was me, sonny, mike scott, and barbarella.. it was like old times, a bit.. the hanging out, the playing, the traveling.. we had alot of fun. as far as getting no credit, there's just no real legal protection for that sort of thing.. the kind of intellectual property that i bring is considered accompaniment, and not composition.. i have no preference for a particular size of venue.. either way, something is a problem.. on a big stage in front of a gigantic audience, you can have trouble hearing, because of the reflection of the sound off the back wall, and also the audiences can get really loud, as well.. with a smaller venue, the sound is more in focus, but usually the places were packed to the gills, and the temperature would be really uncomfortable to perform in.. plus, the degree of technical difficulty may go up.. power problems, tuning issues because of the humidity, bad or unexperienced perssonel running monitors or front of house.. different things.. but always fun. which is why i still play at bunker's every monday.. i did, the whole time i was working for prince. quite often, i would leave rehearsal at paisley park, sleep during the drive downtown, and play a full three sets. and yes, it was my birthday on tuesday.. thank you!! michael b.

Songs like 'sarah' are probably easy for Prince to do but does that make it any less exciting? I love the drumming in that BTW...it's so energetic. I thought Chaos was refreshingly raw (some of it). I hated that Scrap D guy...but I thought stuff like 'The Same December' was just incredible...but missing some serious bottom end..bad recording in my opinion.

Ronny I think you may have not read my post properly or in the way that it was intended.
I just merely state that those albums did not contain what maybe one would consider Prince capable of. As I mention both albums contained some Gems and yes amongst them I would include She spoke to me as I also included 'Old Friends For sale' and 'When The Lights go down', just really talking about the two albums as a whole in a general picture Still I guess that is the beauty of music and in fact most art in any form we all can hear/see things differently, would be pretty boring if we didnt
