not to mention many, many heated political discussions we've had in there over the years. the P&R forum has never been a place of peace, nor was it ever intended to be.

but we had more moderators and they seemed more effective back then.

the reason i rarely visit P&R today anymore is that it seems to be mostly inhabited by people who hijack threads and disrupt discussions, for the sake of disruption, and - as you correctly point out - i've had many a thread and discussion ruined in the past by just this type of behavior. in fact i know a lot of folks who have bailed from the P&R forum, for these reasons.

TBH heated discussions are not the issue....I realize that's par for the course. I was speaking specifically of the issues that I outlined in the OP and the bolded portion of your reply.

Pity that yourself and others are discouraged from participating due to so much clowning...that's the problem with allowing a free-for-all.

Most threads in P&R do not stay on topic past the first three or four replies and there are threads there now that have nothing to do with politics or religion....they are just regular news items.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a heated debate but when it turns into bullying, lying, trolling, and baiting just to grandstand for attention, there's no way a decent discussion can take place.

Mach was the last person who was able to be present enough to effectively moderate that forum and my suggestion is that until someone else is able to commit the same amount of time, it should be shut down.

I keep having to repeat over and over that my OP suggestion wasn't to shut it down permanently. For the umpteenth time, I said....

"THE P&R FORUM NEEDS TO CLOSE UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THERE ARE ENOUGH ACTIVE MODERATORS TO ALLOW SOMEONE TO MODERATE P&R FULL TIME."

I don't know how much clearer I can be but at least you didn't call me names, so thanks for that.

Actually, based on my experience over many years, it is currently operating better than normal. There is far less personal abuse of people than before, many of the long term baiters have moved on, the rolling conspiracy theory threads, climate change threads, religion baiting threads etc are far less often. If anything, the problem with the forum is a lack of participation and passion. Too many OPs post a thread and walk away without replying to anyone, let alone simply asking the hijackers to stop. The best way to improve P&R is to promote and participate in postive discussion. We are mostly all adults, if we promote and participate in positive discussion, we can police ourselves. There will always be threads like the one about the Australian hostage event that was hijacked by a single person to push their only agenda, but this occurs in other forums forums as well.

actually, those were some of my fav topics. i enjoy the farther out side of reality. i was sorry to see that side of the P&R forum go.

Are you looking for more moderated posts, or are you simply looking for posts to be moderated more to your liking?

If your goal is to see the P & R forum without certain members participating, or without certain opinions expressed, then that's not a very valid reason to request more moderators or shut down a forum.

I suspect the moderators we do have are being kept busy with issues that have little to do with moderating the actual rules. All message board forums have weird vendettas, and people making a hobby out of getting members banned, essentially shutting down dissenting opinions, discussion tengents, so that's standard, but the P & R forum rules seem pretty clear, and worth following. Worth moderating too.

Meanwhile, some not so subtle, or vague instances of racism and bigotry have been allowed to stand. I'm talking about links to supremacist sites, holocaust denial that verges into hate speech, blanket statements about entire races with supposed intellectual discussion backing up the theories, etc. These strike me as being in clear violation of the forum rules, but I don't fault moderators for erroring on the side of free speech or maybe just drowning in all the petty fights and missing it.

I also think topics that are brough up excessively should perhaps just have their own sticky. Not every topic should turn into a Racism in America, or Israel/Palestine discussion.

I rarely post in P&R anymore. I see an interesting thread, start to read it, and after the 5th post when I see certain orgers completely derail it, I leave. When I say derail, I don't mean a differnence of opinion. I mean the obvious and deliberate lying, mis-quoting, baiting, and childish posting...there is a difference.

no, let me spell this out for you: you are derailing the thread because you object to ONE link that was posted, which was been deleted.

and instead of actually reading the OTHER links posted, and discussing the topic - which topic is disinformation by the way, and not how 'treehouse' takes offense at links it doesn't approve of - instead of staying on topic you have been ranting about that particular link for several pages.

stop whining about the link, and get your head into the discussion of the actual topic
