How I ended up visiting this site

I've been out of music, movies, tv, etc for the past almost 9 yrs, because I've been raising kids. In April my youngest turned 3 and I now have more time to get back into my own interests. In April I see Prince on Lopez Tonight, totally dumbfounded, "what?! he's still doing his thing, and so brilliantly too!" So this summer, I've been catching up on things I'd been missing, but especially P b/c there's just so much amount of stuff to catch up on since 1992-93 (1993 is around when I completely forgot about P - I was very young in the 80s, so my memory of him then is vague and complicated, and actually not too much b/c my older bros were not fans and they were the source of pop culture for me when I was that young).

Anyway, I could be listening, appreciating, and never visit a site like this - many do. But here's why I got here. When I tell people I've been getting back into music, and we talk about different artists, songs, etc., it's all cool - but when I mention Prince, it's like "Prince?! ewww..." It's even a joke for my neighbor that I'm a "prince fan." I'm volunteer scooping ice cream at my kids' school and he comes by and says, "so are you gonna make a prince flavored ice cream?" Say what?! This guy mentioned Taylor Swift about 5 times to me, I don't think he's out to make "Swift flavored ice cream," whatever that means. I mentioned Prince to him once, and now it's like it means something about me. Maybe it's the 80s image of Prince, perhaps people are uncomfortable with him/his music, for various reasons. Anyway, it can't be just because they don't think the music's good b/c we can discuss that. But we can't discuss Prince. So that's how I got here, just to get a little Prince conversation sometimes b/c I can't have a conversation w/ any real live people around me. Also some of the posts are very funny, and the arguments b/t those who think he can do no wrong and those who think he can do no right are...interesting.

Move to Holland...nobody makes fun of Prince here wink

Serioulsy, your post surprises me, I never had anybody around me that was uncomfortable with Prince. Of course not everybody is a fan, but they all respect him.

Same here!

I mean about the fact that it has been difficult for me to talk about prince( I've been raising kids too, but stayed in touch with Prince stuff).I have been living in Mexico for 15 years and came to France last year. In Mexico it was always : eeewwwww, Prince?Really?

Here in France they are more respectful but my close "entourage" still makes fun of me. (family)
