It's his PERSONAL HOBBY. It's not a public service website.

To compare the NPGMC, a commercial entity which CHARGED for membership to Housequake.com is quite frankly ludicrous.

It's a "personal hobby" that had thousands and thousands of members in it. We deserved better than this because he got us involved in his "hobby". I compared the end of HQ to the end of NPGMC, not the sites as a whole so relax.

I'm sorry Cam, I think you're being unfair to compare the closing of the two.

Yes HQ closed very suddenly, in fact I didn't even know myself until someone emailed me, however it was always within Aaron's right. When the NPGMC closed, there was largely outrage due to the "lifetime membership" statement that had been made and the money that had changed hands.

Maybe some may feel they deserved better but I think Aaron deserved even more than that for staying with it for so long in the face of adversity.

I never said that Aaron doesn't deserve props for doing the site. I respect him for keeping the site up but I still think things could have and should have been done differently, as a form of respect to us fans. That's all.

So if the banner didn't lead to problems... then Gav fed us all a line of BS. And I simply don't beleive he did. Could there be more...? Sure... but it was still a logical conclusion, supported by the explanation given. Case closed.

Otherwise.... just ignore me. I'm only here getting the scoop on the Who's Who. I say welcome to the Org former HQ'ers. But to a couple of you....
brick
you know who you are... and you definitely know why.

P.S. To a Mod...
Wouldn't this topic be best served in the General Discussion forum as it relates to members...not to Prince.org itself. Also it may get the visibility the OP desired.

As I said, the banner was a MINOR issue that caused mails to go back and forth.

We'd previously been given a guideline that we not use prince' face or any copyrighted images in the header. Regardless of whether the "symbol" is legally copyrighted (a whole issue in itself) then from a LEGAL standpoint, the banner used was within the law (it used the soapstone alchemy symbol with a flower on the top - not "Prince's" symbol).

We then received an email TELLING us to change it from one of his staff who has a habit of not working WITH the fans to solve things. This was quickly jumped by a member of staff who does have interpersonal skills and we were discussing what would and what wouldn't offend P - actually to good effect and we were resolving things.

However, as I've stated on this thread an others, Aaron had been feeling pretty down about HQ for some time and had been thinking about closing the site for over a year now. When I started to discuss the latest issue at hand, I think Aaron asked himself the question "why do I do this?" and couldn't really answer the question - a fair call if you ask me.

So to answer the question - was this about a header ? The blunt answer is "no" as it was about Prince's many many requests (trust me, you don't see 99% of the issues that come up on a regular basis), however the banner was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

You know the most annoying thing about this ? People that say "I told you so" when it achieves nothing - it just makes them look like a smart-arsed 10 year old. If that's how people get kicks then fair enough but me - I just try to look out for fellow fans, that's all. I guess some people just have empty lives, oh well.

Anyway, it's nice to be "fully" back on the org - please pardon my temporary departure for a few years lol

I think many of us understood where you were coming from. And the fact that a lot of things go on behind the scenes is completely understandable and expected. This was not a 'one situation' incident. But an accumulation of many... but as you inferred it was indeed the straw that broke the camels back.

The only aspect brought up was that Serge (and I'm sure he wasn't the only one) thought that there may have been trouble after using the header... and there was. It may have been a 'minor' issue.... but it was 'major' enough to push Aaron over the proverbial edge. Regardless.... no one is asking the question on how and why right now. If they don't get it at this point... they never will.

But on the simple aspects of was there trouble from using the header.. and did members like Serge predict there may have been trouble by using the header.... the answer to both are yes. The issue doesn't need to escalate past that.

okay, enough said about it.

It's time to move on .....

Housequake will be remembered as a massive information site about everything Prince has done in the past, with members who gave as much information as needed on subjects such as previous concert tours, recording sessions, released albums, downloads etc.
That will never happen at the Org, as it has too many members, too may threads etc.

A great documentation site is lost, hopefully some of its contents will be exposed somewhere else

So, big question, is the Org allowed to use the name prince in prince.org ??

Thanks for bringing that up again. I think we were making great stuff with the resource guide. Thanks again to all members who added information. It is a shame that it got lost in the form it was (developing) in.

If it will help to stop the arguments over who did or didn't do what and who should of done or not done that but did do and now wishes they hadn't, then I take full responsibility for the downfall of HQ and insulting our master - his royal purple highness and emperor of copyright enforcement... PrinceĀ©

Anyway, I really do hope another similar site can rise from the ashes of HQ. One that features all that excellent reference material, and also one that features all those great people who I enjoyed reading the posts and thoughts of... oh and I suppose it wouldn't be the same if we didn't have a few of the nut-jobs back as well.

Wherever you are Aaron, I hope you're enjoying a well earned break and the freedom that comes from not giving a f**k what P thinks or does from now on! Thanks for all your hard work over the years and fighting for the rights of fans to be fans.

i have always wondered why Prince was cool with that. If anything, i would think he would want to take down a site that has his NAME in the title (not that i hope that happens in any way)

That's what i just don't get about the whole web control thing. I can do a search on aol for Prince and pull up a video and yet the wrong avatar somewhere can cause him to go loco.... it's so random what seems to go against his "rules" confused

Its not that hard really. the term... the name... the title... PRINCE... has existed since... well... before the dawn of time. And Prince did not make moves to secure the 'internet' domain name 'Prince' when he could have.... like when the net first came up. He can copyright and/or trademark 'Prince' only so far. In the context of an American entertainment icon... he has tried to cover as many basis as possible. Also his likeness can be copyrighted and/or trademarked. His prince is definitely trademarked. But inspite of his desires to control his name and image on the net.... it is much bigger than him and his influence can only go so far.

He can issue 'rules' about his image, his likeness and his trademarked symbol... most of which a court would be the final say on fair usage and such.... but the domain Prince.org..... he can't say squat because Ben got it first and legally. This in fact gives the site the right to use the name Prince with less prejudice because it IS the name of the site.... nothing Prince can do about that.

But.... if he wanted... he could pay the owners of the domains related to Prince (com, net, org, etc) a significant fee if he wanted it bad enough..... they may sell. I always wondered if Ben would sell Prince.org to Prince for the right price.

I still have to adjust to the org. I just wish HQ didnt have to close so sudden. Aaron couldve at least give a warning, so members could adjust to the idea. Besides that I fully respect and understand Aaron's decision. It's just a hobby after all and who needs the constant hassle.
Somehow I still hope HQ or something similar will return. After being 7 years on that site on a daily basis I feel like ready for rehab razz wink

Better still, Ben has always made it clear that the "P" in prince.org is not capitalized. It's just the word, "prince".

So prince.org is NOT violating anyone's copyright.

Pay no attention to it being purple in color! cool

The resource guides where the best! But I'm sure a lot of Quakers have copypasted huge amounts of that information somewhere. I'm sure a lot is saved among the members of HQ.

Same here.

I'm better at visual identification than remembering names so it certainly helps me spot HQ refugees if I see a familiar avatar. I'm also wondering where Modernaire, Cateto and a few others are. I always enjoyed Modernaire's take on things and although I often disagreed with Cateto's opinion on P's recent output, I still enjoyed reading his OTT opinions on it.

No offence to the Org (whose members have been very friendly and accommodating, give or take a couple of idiots) but I do hope 'someone' is as we speak constructing a replacement or rebirth of HQ.

Hopefully Gav (Turnitup) and the other HQ Mods* are thinking about this possibility.
