It's a cute little album, very yacht rock/70's AOR with a heavy dose of R&B.

"Crazy You" is probably my favorite on there, although "Just As Long As We're Together" is solid as fuck.

It's amazing that David Z. was around during this time, and actually gave Prince advice on some things and helped with some production stuff. At one point, Warner was going to list David Rivkin as the executive producer, but they went with Vicari because he had worked with Santana (among others).

Warner had set up a photoshoot for the album cover. Prince balked at that (as much as he balked at Vicari was exec. prod). The guy Prince hired for the cover shoot ended up taking a photo of Prince in his (the photographer's) dark room, only lit by candlelight. That became the cover.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

lol lol Someone on Instagram called it "so prolific".

I was like ....uhhh, that's not that that means. Prolific means characterized by abundant production in a short time. One album isn't an abundant production in a short period. I don't know if the person meant that "For You" itself, the song, was prophetic in that he would end up sharing his whole life with everyone through his music, or they were just a dumbass. LOL They blocked me after the correction.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Love the album! It is just as diverse as the rest of his career. It really seems constrained at the same time there is this energy underneath that seems to tell of the greatness that will be!

I just listened to the album from start to finish (which I have not done in at least 6 months). It's a very respectable debut album and clearly showcased Prince's immense musical talent, at the age of 19. If I had to give it a rating versus other artists' debut albums, based solely on a listening test, I give it a 9 out of 10. Compared to the rest of Prince's catalogue, I give it an overall rating of a 6.5.

.

There are three songs from For You to which I listen regularly: "Soft and Wet", "For You", and "I'm Yours".

.

His strengths on this album are his vocals, multi-instrumental repertoire, and the ability to "do it all" --- sing, play instruments, produce, compose, and write. For You establishes that Prince could create a coherent album of his own material. The album flows; it opens, quite appropriately, with "For You" and ends with the masterful "I'm Yours" and its outstanding guitar work. Prince demonstrates that he can play percussion, keyboards, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar, among other instruments.

.

The advanced nature of the guitar work on "I'm Yours" is, to me, the most impressive aspect of this album because "I'm Yours" remains among the very best of Prince's/prince's studio electric guitar performances in his entire catalogue. "I'm Yours" absolutely is among his top 20 studio electric guitar performances, and this song is from his first album.

.

For You establishes that Prince has a GREAT voice, as well as an impressive vocal range. While most of his singing on the album is in his higher register or falsetto, he also displays his lower register on "Soft and Wet" and "Just As Long As We're Together". His voice is clear and has a lush quality to it.

.

His composition (of the actual tune of songs) is decent and promising, but there clearly is room for improvement. I feel that his weakness on the album is the songwriting. Overall, the lyrics are pretty average and I think it's fair to describe his songwriting (for lyrics) as an emerging skill. I think that "Baby" has the most best lyrics of any song on For You, and demonstrates that Prince definitely has room for improvement and development in this area. The songwriting on For You showed that Prince could take a lump of clay and form it into a smooth round ball, and with some additional coaching and practice, he had the potential to craft some really nice peices of pottery.

.

Overall, For You is a very good first album and a great starting point to his illustrious, legendary 38-year career as a musician.

Imagine if his estate had its shit together enough that they could craft a strategy of releasing deluxe versions of each of his albums during their actual anniversary years?

Imagine it. Then remember the shit show we're dealing with & have always dealt with when it comes to Prince releases.

We need to put down the Purple Kookaid when people say this is a masterpiece; give me a break. It is a solid album, 3 and a half to four stars.

What is even better is the lustfull amount of outtakes. Those songs in some ways are even better: Make It Through The Storm, We Can Work It Out, Donna, etc.

Wouldn't You Love To Love Me love I hope it makes it to the deluxe version if it ever gets released/remastered.
