Was going to be there during this time... to do the whole "Prince experience" in MPLS... Paisley, the other sites.... Dakota Club to catch Andy that Saturday.... was hoping for something special. Kinda gutted now. No interest in dropping that kind of dough x 3 (GF & Son joining me).... hope they sell single day passes soon.

I sent a message to Mark Brown:
Hey Mark,
I'm writing to you to express my disappointment regarding the ticket prices for the upcoming Paisley Park Celebration. I realize that The Revolution probably had nothing to do with it. I also definitely understand that artists should get paid, but these ticket prices are above and beyond what Prince himself charged for previous celebration. It's beyond what festivals charge for VIP tickets to see 100 bands over the course of days. Also, this event is being held on the anniversary of his death. Consequently, the high ticket money aspect has a particular vulgarity to it. I feel like it's exploitive of Prince, and exploitive of the fans. A day of mourning and celebration should not be a giant cash-in.
I don't hold it against you and the band for playing this show. I imagine you are locked into a contract or something now that tickets have gone on sale. I just wanted to say something about it. Prince's first death anniversary gathering should not be encumbered by these kind of greed issues. I do hope you guys have the the opportunity play more shows than just this.
I really love The Revolution. I feel like I have connected with each one of you personally. I'm a performer myself, and I've realized recently that that is the magic of music, where individuals can connect in intimate ways to thousands of people. It truly is a magic trick. When Prince died, I felt like somebody I had actually known had died. I did have some very minor run ins with Prince, but I didn't know him. I felt like I knew him completely, though. I felt very weird about this until I came to that realization: that's what art does.
You guys are the keeper of this legacy. A legacy built not just from Prince's labor, but your own. I know that you want to take the best care of it. I have confidence you understand what it means. I hope in the future you are able to keep yourselves at a distance from the money grubbing of the Prince family lawyers, (or whatever is going on). It pretty much is my life dream to see the Revolution play. I was 13 when you broke up. If I had the money to goto this, I most likely would go, even though I feel funny about the issues surrounding it. I hope there are other opportunities to celebrate his and your legacy in the future.

Prince had a lot of people play with him, and work for him. No one does something at that scale alone. And he worked his bands particularly hard. They dedicated their entire lives to him. Take out Matt Fink and Mark Brown from The Revolution, and you have a completely differrent band. No one plays like Mark. Mark was like Prince's Clyde Stubblefield. He brought tremendous energy and excitement to that music.
I realize that this is a political issue for a lot of people on the org. But it's not for me. I don't really want to argue about it.
I don't want Mark Brown to do anything. Just wanted to express how I felt, and encourage the band to do other shows. Maybe I will write to Paisley later. I doubt their lawyers give a fuck, though.

Remember when Prince and 3EG played at the Myth? One ticket to that was $259 !! So he did do some pretty pricey gigs from time to time. However this does seem pretty steep. Even so I bought myself one ticket cause I live half an hour away from Paisley, don't have to pay for travel and lodging etc. I was going to do a VIP tour soon but may hold off on that now and see what I get to see during this event! If you don't want Mark Brown to do anything, then why bother with the letter? You don't have to knock Prince, you don't have to knock the Estate down to Mark Brown.
Prince's legacy will live on forever. The revolution was only a band that worked for Prince and only 1 of many. In fact when you hear 'The Revolution' you automatically think of Prince, but when you hear "Prince" you don't automatically think of the revolution. [Edited 11/28/16 12:33pm] |

Not everyone is coming from out of state. I see some people on FB are upset because they already got plane tickets for that week. I don't get how anyone could book plane tickets without knowing the situation with tours. Right now the PP website is only showing ticket availability through mid-February. I get that people need to book flights well in advance but there's no way I'd buy a plane ticket if there were no GA or VIP tickets available yet. One can't assume anything. I highly doubt they're going to be offering regular tours on the days of this celebration event. Paisley Park is in your heart

I've got nothing against the estate making money, not at all, but I really wish they'd do something for those of us who don't have that sort of disposable income and live quite far away. Why not embrace 21st technology and do some sort of streaming? They should have streamed the tribute for sure. Even their merchadise isn't available for oversees shipping yet.
This does seem a little steep in price, I hear that the previous celebrations that actually had Prince there were cheaper? Factor in travel and accomodation... wow. |

Prince let the Revolution go in 1986, hardly dedicating your entire life to him is it? Mark has bills to pay and things like this are going to help pay them. I'm sorry but I think your letter to him was an exercise in futility. Oh well. [Edited 11/28/16 13:17pm]Baby, you're a star.

Glastonbury is $300, and has the biggest bands in music. The Moneyapolis music festival $500 minimum? The estate are out of their fucking minds, This is what it sounds like when fans get purplepsychedelicpimpslapped.
Exclusive VIP merchandice... Why is would someone pay $500 just for the option to spend more money? Why would the estate limit the number of people they can sell to?
They might want to put together better packages with local hotels and resturants. I can appreciate what they're trying to do, but they need to get real with the pricing. Especially for a once a year thing like this when people are going to be coming from abroad. [Edited 11/28/16 13:29pm] |

Yeah, I don't either. It does seem steep, though. But, this is a different era. The building, estate, etc. has been monetized, and business is different now. $999 seems like a lot. Militant is right that you're looking at a lot of money with hotel and airfare.
Perhaps fans see it as more too, because the star won't be there this time, and it's exceedingly more than it ever was when he was alive.

I actually don't have a problem with the price. That's about $125 a day for both the events and concerts. I think that's reasonable. It would be nice to offer day passes, tho.
What worries me is the clusterfuck that was the tribute. People dropping out last minute, it seemed like the left hand did not know what the right was doing, tickets on sale last minute, etc. I truly believe that Morris Hayes saved that tribute because NPG under his direction was damn near flawless. With all he had to deal with and the last minute changes- well, I hope boyfriend got the thanks he earned and deserved from the estate and family. I am just hoping and praying that this celebration does not go the way of the tribute. If the same people are organizing it, I fear that it may.

My problem isn't so much with the price (as if you look at it as per hour it's relatively reasonable) but the fact that this was offered as an option at all. And if there are no single day passes I'm going nuts because I was planning to visit that weekend! My only opportunity until probably many months from then. 999 upside down is 666. Seriously though, I normally don't make a fuss about the cost and I have been fortunate enough to never let the cost keep me from attending a Prince event. With that said, I'm going to have to sit this one out. |
