hey - I posted a question over on a studio site, asking about compression. I've used it for years, ALMOST cluelessly. I know what it does, but didn't understand the ratio thing, or other things about it.

All I ever knew about compression is that it manages the volume really well - caps the high volumes, boosts the low volumes, but beyond that, I knew very little. That link really helps to understand what I'm doing.
