Hello Abrazo. How are you sweetie? All the hymns in our songbook are written and composed by JWs. They are contibuted. They are not standard hymns that you would find in any other songbook. No names are mentiones as to honor the contributor. Many times we get together and sometimes we sing kingdom songs or musicians may play them. Larry Graham has done similarly...as well as lesser known musicians. But the compositions belong to the WT Bible and Tract Society. It's good to hear from you.

You are right that if the hymns were written by JW's, not so long ago, they are protected by copyright . But I was actually referring to old hymns, those that are too old to still be protected by copyright, like original Bible texts are. JW's could also claim to own the copyright to the Bible texts of the "New Translation", if they are sufficiently original enough to constitute a new work. You can see then however that the new text must differ substantially from the old, which is probably not a good idea. Nevertheless the collection of works that is a newly published Bible (in whatever translation) is also protected by copyright. So JW's don't have to "own" all the newly translated texts; it is sufficient protection to own the copyright of the new collection. As for the "no names are mentioned to honor the contributor" of hymns; that is okay when the contributor has agreed that his/her name won't be mentioned as author. If they did not, it's not okay. Nice sentiment. But freedom of speech/religion has nothing to do with the NPGMC. Those freedoms just mean that the Government can't restrict your speech or religious beliefs. You are saying that constitutional rights only work "vertical" (i.e. government -> citizen) which is not entirely true, because they also work "horizontal" (citizen -> citizen). NPGMC is a private entity and it can censor your speech however it wants. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be upset though.
That's true if the NPGMC clearly states it reserves the right to restrict speech on their privately owned website (which it does, so no discussion about that). There was a brief moment this spring where the club was kind of fun and diverse - I think it was a reaction to all the activity going on with Prince being in the mainstream media so much again - but now that things have died down a bit, the "usual suspects" have driven off all the newbies and it's business as usual back at the NPGMC ranch again... | |
