man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The author of the article seems to take issue with that, pointing to the practices of other artists and noting that we're in a recession (with regard to the price).

Yes but they dont realize what it comes with. Live streaming videos, hookups on concert tickets, unreleased music for the collectors, 10 albums worth of material, all well worth the price of admission if u ask me.

Again, if all of that comes to pass as you've described it, that all will be worth $77. But, I don't know that membership costs of $77 will deliver all that.

Nowhere does he say anyone is getting those 10 CDs worth of material AT ALL - let alone any of it this year. All he says is that they've organized it.

You know how Prince is, he could call them at 4am and want something uploaded ASAP and they have to be ready.

The good news is that they have organized unreleased material, so at least Prince has an idea of what he "might" want to release thru the website. When . . . that remains to be seen.

A smooth move would be to offer some of the previous Musicology downloads free to anyone who purchased them before.

Besides the music the best thing that came out of the NPGMC was the early access to tickets, premium seating, and soundchecks. If he brings that back I don't give a damn if he shows old episodes of the Smurf's..I'm paying!

The Detroit soundcheck alone was worth the $100 membership fee. That is one of my greatest concert experiences ever.

So for basically what boils down to less than $6.50 a month... I'm getting the three new albums, new videos from the albums, concert footage (like Coachella which people have already seen), the potential for other un-released music and videos, etc etc etc

$6.50 from my monthly entertainment funds.....

Hmm.. Prince's site or a bucket of popcorn at the movies.... hard choice.

until it happens, it's nearly a myth.

I recall being told I was getting some albums that never ever surfaced back in 2002.. after my credit card was charged.

EXACTLY! if all of this is at the expense of Prince's whim (NOW PRINCE YOU KNOW YOU AS GUILTY AS A WHORE IN CHURCH), its not worth the cost of maybe I'll get a hamburger next tuesday for 77 dollars today!

Fuck that, just give me my happy meal and if you throw in a toy cool, but give me the damn happy meal!

He obviously has more than 10 albums worth of unreleased tracks, so maybe will get another ten everytime we renew the membership.

sorry, don't believe that

well that's because they won't be lol the vault material or other new mp3
files of recent/brand new material will be up for sale on the site if they
are ever released at all.

no one strictly said all this stuff will come for free.

the way i read that quote, we might expect a streaming live concert at some
future date (probably a one off thing) and lots of streaming footage from
older concerts and videos.

everything beyond that will appear in time, over the course of the year or
even next year and will be "outside" of the initial membership fee. so you
have access to the site but exclusive content will still have to be dished
out for.

which makes sense.

it's slightly alarming that people are now already thinking they might get
10 albums of unreleased material for their membership fee

Thinking they'd actually get them at all, after all the carrot dangling, baiting and switching Prince has done over the years, alarms me. In that battered woman returning to her abuser after he says he'll never do it again for the umpteenth time, kind of way. neutral

Neither do I unless its the stuff already released such as the 4 cd set Crystal Ball and Choclolate Invasion, NEWS material.

Defintitely not a 10 cd set of never released material.

Hell, I wouldn't believe a 5 cd set.

Prince knows that his old unreleased stuff is worth more than that. 10 cd set of of his vault material? thats the definitive collection for any prince fan, he is well aware of what he holds in that.. that won't be touted from some subscription site.

oh well, hopefully something will come out of it

He also claims a colleague has organized 10 albums of old Prince music never released in any form.

I find it difficult to believe any artist would release ten albums of unreleased songs along with live broadcasts, video documentaries, archive concerts - not to mention three new albums - for $77. I'm just judging by precident and past experience here. If these compilations exist, we'll have to pay. And pay I probably will. Gimmie that ten minute Kirky J reggae remix of Tell Me How U Wanna B Done.

I agree, and here is why. Prince is of the belief that his only competition is himself in the past. As blinkered as it is, Prince believes he has no equal in modern music. To release vault material would be to release a monster on himself - it would produce damning evidence to the popular claim that Prince was 'better' way back when. Once this legendary material is out there in the public domain the question arises 'what more does Prince actually have to offer?' - another Mr Goodnight? That great body of unreleased work we all yearn to one day own in pristine sound quality is Prince's dangling carrot for us bunch of NPG donkeys. We will never get it. Just pay your 77 sheets and serve your time.

Read carefully:
But the deal-sealer, he concedes, is the potential for streaming live, VIP-only concerts from Prince's Los Angeles mansion. "There could be a live chat going on with members watching a concert, and Prince could actually play requests," Clay says. He also claims a colleague has organized 10 albums of old Prince music never released in any form.

The only reference to the 10 lps is in the last sentence which makes no explicit reference to them being offered on the site.
And everything above that is tentative.

i nearly always refrain from nay-saying etc, but in this case I feel it's necessary to help out with the old caveat emptor.
