With many on here, like obsessed fanboy KCOOLMUZIQ, Prince can do no wrong and they do not like to hear any criticism whatsoever. Many of these people never saw him when he was at his peak, early/mid 80s - early 90s or even on The Musicology & W2A Tours. These recent shows pale in comparison. Back then, there were no sampler sets, no nonsense about how many hits he has, great new albums that everyone wanted to hear played, way more dancing with Prince on top of his piano, playing backwards and then jumping off, themes with lots of sexual tension vs religion, great, versatile bands that jammed out and shows that were at least 2 1/2 hours long. Even the show that I saw back in Dec of 2013 at Mohegan Sun blows away these recent shows. At least they played a few more obscure tunes, jammed out and played over 2 hours. Having Damaris Lewis on stage dancing the entire show was pretty cool too. He did do that sampler set with the same exact songs as I heard the other night in DC, which was and still is pretty lame.
U know the irony of those obsessed fanboys like KCOOL? I can totally understand why uber Prince super fans would come to A PRINCE FAN SITE and praise Prince til the cows come home. After all, if you can't full blown gush about Prince on A PRINCE FAN SITE where else can u show your praise for the man without feeling like u will be attacked?
I'm not much into hero worship. Not my bag. But I have more respect for the Super Fans on a specific artist site than trolls who continually have to scream continually about how much they dislike said artist or whatever direction said artist is going on a site dedicated specifically to said performer.... |

I'm what you would call a hard core fan & I'm really hoping this isn't the setlist he brings to the Bay Area if & when.. If he was still into doing aftershows it'd be one thing but a by the #'s set is not what I'd pay to see at this point. [Edited 6/18/15 15:22pm] |

The days of Prince diving off pianos are over , thank god. Who whats to see a nearly 60 year old man jumping across the stage trying to relive his youth. You only have to look at Madonna and her recent stage antics to know that Prince is going down the right road as a life performer. There are plenty of tours and videos out there for people to watch prince in his youth jumping around and humping his guitar. Hes been there, done that and read the t shirt. The sampler set I can understand the criticism. But the casuals at the concert do seem to enjoy them. I think prince started doing the sampler sets with good intentions, getting as many songs out there as he could at a concert, even if it was a snippet.but now it has turned into its own beast, and feels he has to do them as they seem to get a strong crowd reaction. The fact is prince is at a different place now. His belief's have changed for a start. |

He's always done that but he used to use actual mucians, not pre-recorded tracks and vocals. No I don't expect nor did I insinuate that he should still jump off pianos but it would be nice if he still put on shows for everyone, not just people that are willing to spend hundreds on tickets having never seen him before. I think most on here will agree that he has more great songs than just about any artist alive. I just wish he would play more of them. For a while a couple of years ago, when 3EG first started playing live, he was playing Purple Rain without any guitar. He made such a big deal about putting out two new albums and then he hardly plays any of the songs off of them, instead playing the same songs over and over in a different order. Kind of strange but I guess that's Prince. |

I have my doubts about this... first, i find it hard to believe that any forum on the internet doesn't have people complaining about something. Second, at least in the case of Madonna, it seems like she puts on a whole new big production show every few years, with setlists that vary (from tour to tour) more than Prince's*. My guess is that if Madonna's fans aren't complaining, it's because her shows are actually different from tour to tour.
.
* yes, i understand that within a tour, every Madonna show is the same, but Prince's 'new' setlists every night are so interchangable and they've been that way for a long time.

I've been to other artists' sites....And trust me, you don't get some of the ridiculous things we see on the Org....There are not a crew of folks bitching about hearing "Live And Let Die" for the 1, 000, 000th time.....They know the drill. Paul Mac and the like are not hear to turn water into wine. They are putting on a show for the fans....That's it.
Like I said, it comes down to super Prince fans being super Prince fans.....These r the same overzelous fans who are still pining away for a 20 something year old Prince in his prime to rock out onstage. These r the same fans that have witnessed Prince waaaaaaaaay too many times in concert to give a sensible critique of the Midget's show....Again, the irony is Prince, out of most of his aging peers, is revered outside of the Org for giving some of the most acclaimed live shows around at nearly 60 years old.
If I were a Martian who knew nothing about Prince and somehow found myself on Org I would walk away thinking that Prince was a lazy slob who has proven himself to be a joke....I guess we can kinda blame P for this. He has been a bit of a dick to us fans in the past. So I guess he now is getting the fans he truly deserves, if I was being cold and cynical about it.
Or maybe, just maybe, some of u guys need to find a new artist to follow to fulfill whatever hole that is in your life...Because this shit is getting ridiculous....lol
.
Ah, yeah, I hear you. I'm not sure why prince fans are SO critical of prince, but I have a theory...
.
The hype surrounding prince is not justified and it's frustrating. Part of the hype comes from the honest fact that when prince is good, he's really really good, and part of the hype is bullshit prince perpetuates like "real music by real musicians". Either way, fans like myself feel that he's not THAT good, and the hype just becomes obnoxious. And the forum has enough people on the other end of the spectrum, people who think prince is forever the greatest musician of all time, that the two sides can just grate on each others' nerves all day. |

Sad, but true.
People at the concert LOVE his sampler set, I can tell by the way they cheer him on.
It's probably the hokiest thing I have seen any artist do in many years, and I go to see a lot of music. Just play the songs. Prince is the guy who used to brag "real music played by real musicians". What happened? And he has also taken potshots at those who lip synch, rightly so. But what he does is pretty much the same thing. I love when he just sits and plays and sings at the piano or when he did the acoustic sets during The Musicology Tour. They were amazing! But sitting at a keyboard, hitting pre-recoreded (and some vocals) music of the same old songs and bragging about how many hits that he is going to play is pretty lame, especially for someone as talented as he is. I think that is what drives a lot of longtime fans crazy about him. We really do expect more from him than playing the same, mostly old songs, doing sampler sets and playing with an all-female rock band. He is just too great to be doing this. You missed the point about people liking the sampler set? Prince is not doing a show just for you he is doing what entertainers do entertain. |

Wouldn't it be even more entertaining if he had a band that could & did actually play the songs, tho?
A band going through a medley of hits would be more impressive than a guy doing karaoke versions of his own songs. |

Yes, that is my point. I do get the idea that for whatever reason he cannot stand for long periods of time. At the show I was at the other night in DC he sat down after 7 fairly short songs. Maybe there is something to all of those hip injury rumors. Anyone who I have been with at his shows recently or have discussed it with think that those sampler sets are just plain stupid, especially for such a gifted musician as he is. People that like them are probably the same people that go to karaoke bars or watch American Idol but are not real music fans. Has anyone here ever seen anyone else do such a thing, especially after charging top dollar for tickets? I really doubt it. [Edited 6/18/15 21:05pm] |

Nah...I'm going to go with the LOOK AT ME, I'M THE SMARTEST GUY IN THE ROOM option here. I mean, that's the only route I can go to when u r saying the hype surrounding Prince is not justified off of the output/performances of a damn near 60 year old artist/musician.
Like all the true greats (The Beatles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Bowie, Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Rakim ect....), when Prince was in his prime he was indeed worth the hype. But what Prince does in 2015 is gravy. His musical pursuits of the last 15 years is not what transformed him into a musical icon who is lauded as one of the greatest talents of all time. Most people are smart enough not to judge Stevie or the Stones on what they do in 2015 and come to the conclusion that AH HAH! SEE!!!! THEY R NOT WORTH THE HYPE...!!!!!
The irony is Prince at 57-58 is still revered as one of the greatest live acts on the planet beyond the fans u view as delusional. As a recording act Prince is no where near his '80s and early '90s prme. But I think what gets folks like u upset is that Prince still is held to high level status as a musician and live performer. This has to be a confounding reality for u. I feel your pain....
