Why would he want to spend time in Australia!!??

hmm

The Aussie dollar is quite strong at the moment. Something like 103 US cents.
And besides, last I heard he was down $4 million coz of the perfume ordeal so he'll probably want to do quite a few shows here.

Something majorly weird is happening with this tour.

Yes it would've made sense to hold it on the 19th and then just pack up for the last Melb show.

Now is seems like he might be taking a (wait for it.......) holiday up north!!!

If I was a Brisbanite i'd be jerkoff over the thought that he'll be "killing" time in their city!!

Just think of all the suprise aftershows or appearances he'll be making!!?? eek

Why would he want to spend time in Australia!!??

hmm

eek Uh, because Australia is a huge, beautiful, and diverse country?!! Is that a good enough reason?

Prince is playing the 26th and 30th so that Janelle Monae and her troupe can join him on stage. She's playing in Sydney on the 27th. ... that is just my hope, but I have confidence in this happening.

She is indeed.

I have a ticket to her second show on the 27th - given that they're both playing in different states on the Saturday night, I'm hoping that if any sort of aftershow action is going down, it will be later on the Sunday night.

That said, I've all but given up on second guessing. Trying to make sure I'm in the right place at the right time is near-impossible with someone as mercurial as Prince. I'm just going to make my plans and hope they coincide with a surprise gig or two - particularly one that involves Ms. Monae biggrin

I have tickets for Janelle on 26th. When Prince announced tour, I had my hopes on him getting up on stage at Opera House for a song or two. Then the 2nd Brisbane concert is announced....Hopefully for anyone seeing janelle on 27th he'll make an appearance.

Funky,

Janelle Monae. She is a young funkster-2 albums-Metropolis and ArchAndroid. Prince and Janelle are mutual fans of each other. She has supported him on some US dates, and performed songs on some tributes to Prince.

There are rumours that they have worked on something together.

Check her out on youtube-the single Tightrope is probably a good place to start.

I would kill to see Janelle Monae in a venue like the Sydney Opera House. She is great but the venue where I saw her at was not right for her and her show. The sound system was too loud and overwhelmed her voice, plus I was standing (it was standing only) right next to the speakers and Janelle had to compete with the teenyboppers screaming for Bruno Mars, who followed her. rolleyes I would love to see her again in a better venue, where she alone performs. I hope all who get a chance to see her in Oz appreciate her talent. biggrin

Melb - Rod Laver Arena - aprox 15,000 seat capacity

Sydney - All Phones - aprox 21,000 plus seating capacity

I will ay add the numbers and we must have at least 100,000 tickets to sold, I never knew that so many Aussies and Kiwis were into Prince, even if we take scalpers and lucky fams going to Multiple shows, there must be at least 30,000 unique purchasers. Thats a lot of fans, I would have thought by now his fanbase in Australiasia would be short of 1000 or so. There must be some sclaping and stuff going on. Most people I know either hate him or have little idea of him. Where are all these fans.

I get my numbers, Sydney all phones arena 21,000 x 2 =42,000

Melbourne, Rod Laver 15,000 x 3 = 45,000, and Brisbane (I will guess at least 10,000) so x2 = 20,000. That means 107,000 tickets sold.

Thats pretty amazing for a guy who last troubled our charts back in 2004. Anyone else suspicious

Not everyone are fans to the extent that we are.. I went to see see police at western springs because they are classic and I know and like their hits though dont own one of thier albums It's these people that sell out shows not the "1000" obsessed fans like us. remember prince was an 80s icon, a megastar. People are coming to hear neufteen neufty neuf (I'm learning french) and corvette petit rouge not mutiny, mountains and chambre sans hommes.

Adore, There will be a lot of the older fans but I predict there will be a lot of younger fans. Prince is namechecked by many of the current artists as an influence and as an inspiration. Some that I know of that are Australian/NZ only are Birds of tokyo, arhitecture in helsinki, gotye, kimbra, art v science, bluejuice, missy higgins, sia, miami horror. Triple J play a these artists and many of their DJ's are Prince fans-Zan Rowe, Nina Las Vegas, The Doctor etc. Not only do i think there'll be a lot of younger fans but there will be a number of musicians in the crowd.

I think it sometimes it appears that Prince isn't "big" in Australia, and for all intents and purposes, he's certainly not as "big" as he is in Europe or The USA. But don't underestimate just how big he was in the 80s and early 90s. He was an absolute superstar back then. He sold out 5 shows in Sydney, including one at the SCG, back in 1992. So even if a lot of those fans who went to those shows have moved on, lost track, didn't buy his latter albums, etc. there's still a very big fan base to draw from. The last few years especially I get a lot more positivity from the general punter when I say I'm a Prince fan. Back in the late 90s/early 2000s, it was really a no-no. But now, most people, even if they haven't the foggiest idea what he's done since Diamonds & Pearls are more open to him...

Melb - Rod Laver Arena - aprox 15,000 seat capacity

Sydney - All Phones - aprox 21,000 plus seating capacity

Prince – Rod Laver Arena

Purple Circle – 200 @ $450 = $90,000

Purple Reserve (Floor) – 714 @ $350 = $249,900

Purple Reserve (Lower Level) – 540 @ $350 = $189,000

Gold (Lower Level) – 4909 @ $180 = $883,620

Gold (Upper Level) – 6696 @ $180 = $1,205.280

Silver – 1200 @ $99 = $118,800

Total 14,259 = $2,736,600 Gross

Numbers (Approx.) taken from floor plan I posted earlier showing seating numbers per area.

I believe at the time Prince toured in '92 his appearance fee was $3.5 Million.

Anyone have any info as to what it might be this time?

Also at the time 2000 of us Tasmanians bought Diamond and Pearls tickets.

And whats is with the Van Egmond Group releasing videos having dates that are incorrect and also unannounced.

What if someone saw these and planned flights, accomadation, travel etc. around them?

No its not suspicious. He may not have the huge hardcore fanbase of Lady Gaga or the sheer popularity of Beyonce but the name "Prince" resonates with alot people for alot of different reasons. There are so many people, now in their 40s, who grew up in the 80s when Prince was one the biggest names in music. They watched "When doves cry" on the earliest music video TV shows, bought Rolling Stone with Prince's face on the cover, saw "Purple Rain" at the cinema, danced to "Let's go crazy" at the Blue Light Disco. All at a time in their lives when they probably felt most alive. Seeing Prince now is a chance for them to revisit some of that, just for a couple of hours.

Prince also has alot of respect among younger people who are interested in music for music's sake, rather than as a fashion statement. When the Concerts were announced, there was a huge amount of enthusiatic talk about it on JJJ (youth radion station in Oz). It really warmed my heart to hear how excited these 20-somethings were about seeing Prince. They know he's a great musician. They know that so many of the artists they admire, admire Prince. They know he's something special, even if they're not always quite sure why. In short, amazingly, after all this time and all the silliness with name changes etc, the musicianship shines through and the guy still has cred.

But, above all that, alot of people are buying Prince tickets simply because alot of people still appreciate great music played by great musicians.

Na not suspicious, but i have that feeling like "well where have u all been the last 15 years?"haha

i think a headline act like P brings all sorts of people out of the woodwork, and most of these numbers will be fans that are coming to see him sing Kiss, when doves cry, and cream,.. not much else. there is no point in resenting them tho as they make him a sell out. it makes it all the more special for me when he sings tracks that half the audience have never heard yet we will all be screaming at the top of our lungs
