Dr. Funkenberry did say they changed it from an after party to an afterjam do we will see if that means anything. At the venue. Doors not open yet. Sounds like they are still doing a sound check. Was able to trade my Nord AA for Nord A seat 1. Will be right up there.

Concert review: Prince rules over 12,000 at the Bell Centre; Dec. 3, 2011
There was a fear – small but significant – in the back of this critic’s mind that Prince at the Bell Centre would never match the pair of epic concerts he gave at the intimate Metropolis this summer.
That fear was quashed exactly one song in to the funk-soul-rock legend’s set, Friday night. It was a dirty funk number, which Prince and his band we’re tearing into with such uninhibited gusto that the crowd jumped to its feet, a party instantly in full swing.
There was no warming up the room. At the tender age of 53, Rogers Nelson came out blazing – hips shaking, moves busting, all full of beans, talent and, again, funk. The song? Not even sure. It sounded like Jungle Love, but it wasn’t. Didn’t matter.
With the passing of James Brown in 2006, Prince inherited the title of the funkiest man in showbiz. His albums may not be what they used to, but on stage the man is untouchable. And as he proved Friday night, that is true whether he’s playing to 2,000 or 12,000 people. It is worth highlighting that this was the singer’s biggest Montreal show in at least two decades – i.e. since he last played the Forum.
He has performed in our city many times since, mostly at Place des Arts; and for about 5,000 at the Bell Centre (then the Molson Centre) in 2002. But the pair of now-legendary sold-out gigs at Metropolis last summer (as part of the Montreal International Jazz Festival) seems to have got people talking.
So it was to a rightful royal welcome that Prince took to his giant symbol-shaped stage (in the round) and plunged into the crowd-pleasing – and I mean that in the best possible way – sounds of his Welcome 2 Canada tour.
Last summer’s shows were full of funk jams and random covers, along with a healthy dose of hits. This was all about the back catalogue. He had a ball with Pop Life, before bringing us to the early 80s with Let’s Work, off 1981’s Controversy. Then on to Empty Room, written in the mid-80s but finally released on his obscure 2003 album C-Note.
Okay, so he was taking liberties. But his audience followed, and was rewarded. Take Me With U, Rasberry Beret and Cream came in short order. “I wish I had a bigger booty!” Prince exclaimed, shimmying up a storm.
The man has one-liners for days. Energy, too. He spent the entire show strutting around the stage, knees bouncing in the air as he got down to the serious grooves his musicians (including funk veteran Maceo Parker on sax) were dropping. He encouraged – nay, demanded – crowd participation. From other artists, that might seem needy; from Prince, it was downright impressive. The man knows another level of showmanship. He has no sense of entitlement; he’s ready to work for his praise.
He ended the main set in style with Purple Rain, introduced with the words: “I don’t ever want to stop singing this song.” Nor did the audience. A massive singalong/love-in ensued. There was confetti, a 12,000-strong chorus of falsetto “ooh-ooh-ooh-oohs,” and big-moment magic that comes from a great artist playing a classic tune, with feeling. The hits landed fast and furious in the encore – Let’s Go Crazy, Delirious, 1999 and Little Red Corvette, each delivering another flurry of great lines and irresistible licks. During the second encore, he teased with the intro of Darling Nikki, before stopping himself.
“I can’t play that!” said the Jehovah’s witness (and former Sexy Motherf****r), showing a sense of humour about his prudish turn. People began heading for the exits after I Would Die For U – an unfortunate move which may have ended things prematurely. There were still lights on stage, leading one to believe that Prince and his players were ready for more. But if you don’t ask, you don’t receive. And so we got a mere two hours and 20 minutes this time around. Not too shabby. But it was no four hours at Metropolis (sorry, couldn’t resist).
NOTE: We would have had a sweet photo gallery for you, but no photographers were allowed into the show. tdunlevy@montrealgazette.com

Carine, so having been to both Halifax and Montrael how did it compare in terms of setlist, crowd energy, venue quality of sound and Prince's performance in general? It sure seems like Montreal is the place to see Prince in Canada. I should have went to see him there instead. [Edited 12/3/11 6:16am]

Well, I have to admit, Montreal won the 1st place again! The crowd was on fire, I was in the front, the setlist was just grrrreat! Dang!!! Yeah, I love Graffiti Bridge movie, so what? ''Oooooooooooh Montreal, say it!''

That's what I thought. Did you notice improved sound quality?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I must admit I am a bit disapointed in the setlist ... Not enough newer songs ... But that's just me. And in the first half of the show, I thought that Shelby (is that her name) was taking too too much space ... Dont' get me wrong, I like her, but that's Prince I came to see ... Not her ... Nice show alltogether Chatou

Is it just me or was it uncool to wear the "Andy" shirt. It promotes one band member to the exclusion of others, and it puts her out front in a big way. The show is about Prince, not Andy. When you don't have a case, yell RACE!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I honestly think that some people didn't even notice it..
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
no it's not just u trust me and i had 2 roll my eyes at the one liners that's he's still saying since jam of the year tour about darling nikki, and the big booty reference since musicology. smh man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

unless i'm missing something, the only other time he had a shirt with someone's picture other than himself has been his wife mayte ..so what am i missing here? but anyway i'm more concerned with the music man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I was really happy about the Setlist. Come on guys, This is an Arena tour. If prince plays Hit after hits, the review and all the crowd will be dancing and happy. He if play obscur song, well. maybe the VIP section will enjoy it and that's all.
I much prefered the moment where everyone was standing and singing and dancing and stuff than those ''Obscur'' song where people went to buy a beer.
If he do a 1000 seats venu, we'll talk again though.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
HEY I forgot that he also did Get your groove on but not sang,. he 'talked' the lyrics.. it took me some time to recognize and after the first sentence ''I got some money cause I just got paid.''. I felt I knew this song and was searching for it..l then realised it was get yo groove on!!! One of my favorite on Emancipation!!!
Yeaaah!!
Yeah, I love Graffiti Bridge movie, so what? ''Oooooooooooh Montreal, say it!''
