This show was really mindblowing, especially the first hour. I was so happy he didn't play Purple Rain and other hits for the 1021st time, but instead went on a trip down to mellow & funklane.

I was standing first row and the sound was perfect. Heard from others that there was a lot of reverb in the harder parts of the show.

Andy Allo is off course not the most virtuosic musician, but the joy & freshness she brings on stage is really delighting. I got goosebumps on the songs she did the lead vox. Her vox were great on Burt Baharach's "The Look Of Lofe" for example, brought tonight in a crazy disco version with Maceo freestyling over it. Very sexy and uplifting and for me one of the highlights of the set. And she was great on "The Love We Make", too.

The rest of the set was also fingerlickin': JIR, Mountains (with Seal) Dear Mr. Man...

All in all a very nice show and one of the best I've seen yet. Great he did take some risks tonight and not played sa

Keep in mind it's a Jazz festival, it's an opportunity to play something different then on a regular concert. If you're a greatest hits fan, that's cool. But keep in mind that these three concerts are being played on a Jazz Festival. Most ticket owners visited the festival earlier that day. They are music lovers and can appreciate music and songs that they haven't heard before. And I think Prince did a great job for providing an awesome setlist with one of his greatest music (don't read hits).

English please!

I couldn't disagree more. There's absolutely no neccessity for first timers to hear purple rain, it's the overalll package they should get into, and there was enough compensation with other great songs to get it done. I went to see Prince my first time in '87, didn't have a clue of any song then, he just got to me that night, and I believe it was with Housequeke/Can't stop...those are the songs I remembered and got me to buy the album and made me a prince junkie. Last night he treated everybody to a hell of a party with a bold and strong setlist.

You having 300 shows at home is irrelevant.

Yeah, Seal really messed up. In the Prince catalogue, "Mountains" is probably one of the hardest songs to perform, due to its rhythmic displacement of phrases in the chorus. There's very little room for improvisation, so you really have to know 100% what you're doing.

Seal didn't - he came in too early or too late or whatever. That in itself is not necessarily such a big deal, the problem is how the band handles it. Should they continue playing the song as it's supposed to be, and hope that he will eventually correct himself, or should they jump in to save the vocals, meaning that they might have to skip a couple of bars or so, with the risk of it sounding awkward.

One thing that makes it even more difficult in this case, is that Seal isn't the bandleader. If it was Prince who made a similar mistake, the musicians' "rule" would be to follow him, even if he's wrong. But now it's the guest soloist who's messing up, with Prince the bandleader also on stage, so who does for example Ida decide to follow - Seal or Prince?

The risks are much higher than people might think. Since musicians are trained to react spontaneously, their impulse is usually to "fix what's wrong". But when 10 or so musicians get this impulse at the same time, they might execute it differently, which could make the situation even worse. The whole song could actually fall apart, even with such high-level musicians as the NPG.

Prince knows all of this, of course. So when he saw it coming, he quickly decided to get Seal off the stage, to avoid any further confusion and possible embarrassment. Not for him, but for the band.

Prince showed us what he's made of: FUNK!

It was amazing. I love Joy in repetition and him opening with that beautiful song was mindblowing. Had the whole audiance captured and in awe. He sure loved us, however not as much as he loved his guitar. He truly went loose and played and cherished his guitar, getting sounds and tunes out of the instrument that were from outerspace.

Unfortunately, I stood near a tall guy with a huge camera+lens. Prince shyed away from him (and all his innocent fans near that evil guy), so I didn't get to see much of his guitar play or performance up close. I enjoyed seeing what he did with the back of his guitar.....

And as soon as he did go near our area, everybody got their camera out, so he left that side of the stage to themselves. WHAT PART OF NO CAMERA'S DO YOU PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND?

Please, for those people obsessed with recording a concert on your camera, why don't you just buy a DVD, go and see that at home? leave the people who like to see a concert and be present at the concert enjoy the experience. I get fed up standing behind somebody who is having their camera in the air, blocking the view for people behind. If you really need proove that you have been at a Prince concert, buy a poster. mad mad mad mad

Back to concert:

It was mindblowing! The purple hippies around me were so happy not to hear something about rain, snow, looks, kisses or red cars. The rest of the audiance was impressed and blown away by his guitar skills and the way he truly showed us he actually is a great musician. After the concert, in line for a taxi, I heard there were a lot of people who didn't know most songs he did, however, they got inspired to listen to his music beyond the songs about the weather, what year it is, what hat to wear or what car he likes.

And he was nailing it. I remember a few weeks ago I cried listening to 'the love we make' and

how I couldn't get 'joy in repitition' out of my head wink The setlist yesterday made me sooo happy.

Prince showed his Dutch fans that he does respect them, and doesn't take them for granted. When he asked if we were allright, I felt he was genuine. Actually, everything he did yesterday felt as if he was genuine and he valued his audiance. He didn't do his theatrical tricks and teasing bits that he knows that work every time. He didn't rely on any of those things, just to get the audiance clapping and involved. He showed us what he is good at, concentrated on making music in stead of a theatrical show and had the audiance captured with that.

Shelby also showed us why she is in the band. Prince and Shelby were amazing together on the Jackson cover 'I want you back'. I love her. She owns her place in the band. And she is very good at paying attention to the audiance when that is needed. She is not all about herself. She was challenged yesterday and delivered. She and Prince working together at a song, is just awesome! I respect her a lot.

Andy has great and enigmatic stage presence. The audiance loved her voice and reacted strongly to her. I'm still a fan of her, I truly think she has star potential. Note the emphasis on potential.

She is a talent, however, not a musician in the league of Esperanza Spalding, Janelle Monae, Joss Stone, Eryka Badu. Nor is she an independent, disciplined, hard working woman like Misty. She is the girlfriend of the boss, and therefore she is on stage. I hope that Prince and Shelby will coach her well. It's her first big audiance tour and she needs to learn to play the guitar now. It's not child play anymore. She also needs to realize she is on stage with Prince and he has a name and standard to live up to. The audiance is there for quality, not for childplay.

Her influence and addition is of good value for the band and the show. It's great she gets so much stage time. However, months ago, I fel for her fresh, innocent, youthfull, careless, spontaneous smile. There is a thin line between that kind of smile and a fake, self-indulgent, presumptuous and opportunistic smile as soon as the camera is around. I hope Shelby and Prince can teach her about containing her ego and stay genuine. She is young and is on top of the mountain now, however, when she doesn't do the hard work to deliver quality, a very steep, deep and painfull ride into the valley might wait for her. I hope she will not let that happen and will proove that she actually is a good musician and not just the boss his newest misstress. We know how most of his mistresses end up.....

So, Andy, get your act together and play the guitar a few hours a day. Practice, practice, practice! Play the guitar until your thumb and fingers are blue and bleeding (not literally). You'r on stage with Prince, not sitting around the camp fire anymore wink

And I love how Renata (right spelling?) is a steady, solid rock on stage. She plays the guitar well, loves making music, is not eager for audiance attention. Her calm, steady and quality play makes a solid base for the band to perform and show of. All props for her!

I apreciate Prince really pulling it off yesterday. People who want to hear his hits, can buy his 'The hits I and The hits II' cd. Watch Purple rain again, when that is your favorite song. Watch all his dvd's while he performs his hits. However, please, Prince is not a clown who has to do the same trick over and over. He is a well respected and legendary musician, valued around the world. Yesterday he was that class musician. Showing us his love for his guitar and music. He used his voice as an instrument, there is nobody who can pull that off the way he does. I hope tonight he will respect his fans and audiance and plays music. There is no need to manage the audiance, just play and the audiance will follow.

About the festival:

It's great. The atmosphere is awesome. There are a lot of parents with their teenage kids enjoying music. There are a lot of foreigners, international musicians who come here for the good atmosphere. Yesterday I met this really nice German saxophone player. He just finished music school and wants to go to a Dutch master in sax (conservatorium of Hoge School in Rotterdam). I saw a few gigs together with him and everything we saw was just great. And I love being on my own on this festival, because I'm meeting so many people, true music lovers and true purple hippies. I never want to go to a festival with others anymore, I just go to a stage where I want to go, drink or eat when I want to, don't have to negociate anything. Love that.

I only had 3 hours of sleep, got home at 8 in the morning and woke up three hours later, at 11. I tried to find the boogie ball yesterday, however, was not lucky at all. Strolled through Rotterdam on my own, phone broke down, and in the end I just took the train back to Amsterdam at 6 in the morning. sad

After I posted this way to long text I will get ready to go back to Rotterdam, because I don't want to miss anything of Jan Akkerman. I missed out on Kyteman on friday and saturday, maybe I can finally see a little of his mindblowing genuis work at the start of the last day cool

I might want to go and see Snoop. However, he 3 years ago I got a ticket to see him in the Melkweg. Which is a good, small venue in the centre of Amsterdam. I got in early for a good spot. Then he arrive 1,5 hour (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) late. He was too stoned to perform and needed a chair to stay erect. Willy Nelson came in for a guest appearance, and he was actually the highlight of the evening. Snoop was okay at Lowlands, however, I do hope he realizes that he's performing for a music lovers today. He performs late, so I see a big risk of him being too stoned to give us his best musical side. Well, when he is able to leave the weed for after the concert, he might just show us where he is good at: improvising his lyrics and his good sense of humour.

I'm in a purple high at the moment, I do hope I can last till the end tonight. I haven't had that much sleep the last couple of days, eating is interfering with the concerts, so I only took some time to eat in the train to Rotterdam eek . My ears are beeping, because somehow the right side of the stage is my favorite spot (the speakers on that side have not survived Prince's fridaynight. Yesterday there were some awefull noises while P was doing his guitar, sound guy has to get his act together, I don't want to end up deaf)

I will stick to the right side of the stage, near the piano. I still hope for some piano songs, and secretly I wish for Prince to do "Solo". For me that is a pure balad and although probably not how is feeling right now, it still is a jawdropping song.

As for his hits: "Cinamon girl", "Play in the sunshine", "boys and girls", "Christopher Tracy's parade", "cream", "diamonds and pearls", I mean, if he is in need for a crowd pleaser, he truly can go beyond wheather casting, cars, hats and looks wink

true... but if I can sing the correct lyrics in the right order and at the right time (and I am not a musician at all) how come a pro like Seal didn't have a clue???

Hope this got recorded. I'm still mad that we haven't heard a recording of that guitar-heavy show he did a month back in LA.

If this one isn't recorded I don't know what will. There were no checks whatsoever. Also not on Friday.

Really hope this one gets bootlegged cool. If not I'll create my own cd with the youtubevids.

It's an awesome concert to get released on audio or leaked as soundboard, it won't happen, but still..........

Have a look at 'The W2A: Euro Tour Song Survey' http://prince.org/msg/12/362417

I have to get ready, because I'm late. I have another request. I would want to see him as a guest performer with Jan Akkerman. Now, that would be cool!

Mh...we´re y to Rotterdam...2,5h....

In my opinion....Mavis Staples, Snoop and Bootsy as guest performers....and Prince and Snoop doin´ something strange dizzl-shit.....

wink

Train delay: missing jan akkerman concert, have to hope he gets invited to play at prince gig tonight, I would really want to see him live!
99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Seal...he was a nice surprise guest, but unfortunately had some problems with the lyrics of mountains...

I just listened to it and he sang...tennesse instead of a land called fantasy wink)

too funny!

But i saw him yesterday on the festival and his concert was really nice, too...people loved it

and therefore it is all fine;)

Thank good, Larry Graham wasn`t there again! Same tired songs over and over confused

Setlist not complete.

Between Dear Mr Man and Stand! Prince played Sly's If you want met to stay.

This show was positively on fire and perfect. Hope tonight he gets the funk out with Bootsy guesting on stage smile

I thought there was a chance Chaka Khan or Candy Dulfer would make a guest appearance y'day, but they didn't. Anyone has an idea why not?

I have just seen the clip with Seal on youtube, falloff , love how Prince says "thank you brother, first verse, lets go" classic Prince humour...

Btw, there seems to be no problems with the sound judging by this clip, sounds really rich and I can hear all the instruments considering it is from someone recording in the crowd.

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.
