Superstition, Stevie vocals and harmonica, now moving to take over Renato's keys.
Prince changes to bass.
Stevie goes under the stage with Mike Phillips as P started "Oh, Stevie Wonder' chant.

Fantastic show! My favorite of the five I've seen here in LA. Prince was in top form tonight, and, of course, Janelle, Stevie and Mike (that sax!) were hot. Will post pics tomororw after I sleep this concert off!

He also played The One with Mike Philips on sax.

Ahem... Prince "mounted" the piano and did a little slide on it during one song.
This is a tie with the 4/30 show, maybe it's a bit better. The combo of Troubadour and this show... best Prince week ever!
4/30 he had Chaka and Larry to inspire him. Tonight he had Janelle and Stevie.
Yes lawd. | |

Stevie played other songs in a medley with Superstition. After he was on stage, he started off playing harmonica, then he sang Superstition, then he sat at the piano and jammed, and sang snippets of 2 other songs (one was You Haven't Done Nothing), then went back to singing Superstition. At one point Ida handed Prince her base, maybe because she was trouble following along (just a guess on my part). It wasn't like Prince demanded the base, she walked over and handed it to me and stood there holding his guitar.

What a great show-- this is my 3rd LA show, and by far my favorite. Lots of amazing guests including Stevie Wonder, what a treat!! We held out on buying seats and got really lucky 2 hours prior to the show, dead center section 1 riser seats for $25 on TM!!! And the icing on my cake was the Insatiable/Scandalous/Adore medley <3 Hope everyone had a blast, we sure did.

I've seen him 15-20x and tonight's show is now in my top 2-3 shows. It was amazing and he really seemed to be having fun. My short review is that this show reminded me of the LoveSexy tour. He was amazing. Too tired to write more but seeing Stevie Wonder perform on his bday was the best! The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. Wow.
I don't want to post one of my usual in-depth reviews because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I know y'all are tired of hearing about how great these shows are, how great Prince is performing, blah blah blah. I get it. I'll keep it brief.
The Kid was in rare form tonight. Trust that. He was feeling REAL good...put on a heckuva SHOW. Prince appeared to be inspired last night.
The Stevie rumours have been out there for a while and with yesterday being his birthday, I had a feeling that Friday might be THE night. When I saw extra security posted around the VIP lounge entrance and watched patrons being aggressively sweated left and right for their passes, I thought that something might be going down. He received much love and respect from the audience and it was especially touching to see the affection and reverence paid to him by Prince, Mike Phillips and Sheila E. Prince is the star of the show and yet there he was helping Stevie, getting his mic right, paying homage...again, no hyperbole but it was a...humbling moment.
My setlist:
DMSR Pop Life Musicology/Prince & the Band Shhhh w/ U Will Be With Me Glamorous Life Take Me With U (Janelle Monae sings w/ P) Raspberry Beret Cream Cool w/ Don't Stop... Superstition You Haven't Done Nothin' (P exchanges instruments w/ Ida; she plays his Tele, he plays her bass) Inglewood Swinging w/ Fantastic Voyage chorus
Samples/Snippets:

It was a very special night. I probably had the biggest smile plastered to my face after the show than I have had of any of the concerts I've seen during this run.
P hit around 10:15pm and we didn't get out of there until after 1am. Janelle Monae deserves mentioning for being an engaging, very creative, special talent with a strong visual flair. Her set was for me very intense and theatrical. Not really my cup of tea but I understand now why she's receiving so much acclaim.
Special shout-out to saxophonist Mike Phillips...Prince featured him throughout the night and he didn't disappoint. Brought a soulfulness and something new to several songs that have been played throughtout this residency. He blended in really well with the band.
Funny moment: John Blackwell missing his cue on "Purple Rain"...he was late coming up the steps and tried to hustle but missed the downbeat. [Edited 5/14/11 3:08am]
