i sound smuggle in my digital recorder to the 18th show. but if its in my pocket and im dancing the whole time like i said its gonna sound all crazy funny...so maybe coat pocket...idk

Mine is little so I just held it up the hold time. Almost forgot I was holding it and almost dropped it when he started playing 'Do Me, Baby'. I have from the beginning of "Kiss" to the end of "Sometimes is Snows In April', but the songs before the Piano medley are all distorted because the speakers had soo much feed back and the drums and crowd...have to lower the volume down to 5 to avoid deafening myself lol . U can hear large amounts of the songs but it's really distorted. Maybe I can figure out a way to clean it up... hmmm

I'll just say that this show was waaay better than the 18th show. I'm happy now. Prince, you're forgiven...for now. lol

OKAY:

Mint Condition only played one of THEIR songs, 'Pretty Brown Eyes', which was the only song I sang along to because I don't know what the hell all those covers were about. They were good and had a good performance so much respect to them. biggrin

Janelle Monae was very good. Great energy, sounded great; but whoever chose to do that foggy/shadowing imaging on the monitors should be slapped because it made Janelle look like she was 4 months pregnant. She did a very nice Moonwalk though. Loved 'Tightrope' and her guitarist was gettin' it. headbang

I totally thought Prince was in the audience and got a little pissed because he was in the 21 section which was the section we had been in on the 18th so I was excited to find out later it was an impresonator. ohgoon

Prince didn't change outfits that much this show which was good because he doesn't really need to. I loved his purple frill shirt - he looked really suave and sexy. He was great and seemed more rested than he did on the 18th...back to back shows like that obviously aren't a good idea for him IMO. Take it easy Mr. Nelson, you aren't 21 anymore. giggle

I NEEDED MORE JOHN BLACKWELL!!!!! mad

From the '? of U'/'Gingerbread Man' to 'Sometimes It Snows In April', I was beyond thrilled...great setlist right there with the exception of PR (boring). OMG! When he dedicated 'Uptown' to Teena Marie mushy . He opened his shirt and wore the heels drooling. His red pants seemed a little tighter than usual so his butt looked even better and he had no problem showing it off to us. That man's ass is like an onion...brings tears to my eyes touched . I totally thought he was going to hump the gold guitar when he put it on the stage, but he didn't. He should have because it would have gotten more money for the auction...the chillens are important Prince so hump the guitar next time. nod

Still can't understand his not changing up his first few songs because for a while there I totally though that I was going to have to sit through the 18th show again but then he started doing '?of U'/'Gingerbread Man' and the lineup changed at the end so I was excited. Tired of '1999'; extremely tired of 'PR'; and I've already stated my opinion on 'Raspberry Beret'...just let me get that copy of sheet music and it's soo being set on fire hmph! .

I got some great second hand weed smoke from someone in my section so I didn't have to buy that $9.50 beer because I was super high for free. Thanks Potheads. biggrin

He did 'She's Always In My Hair'! The moment that riff started, I went off! Love this song and soo nice to hear him play it. bow Janelle dueted with him on 'If I Was Ur Girlfriend' and she didn't know the lyrics because she just scatted through her verse...the scatting was nice but learn those lyrics, Janelle. no no no!

The fan he pulled on stage was cute...so glad he didn't throw her purse into the audience like he did with a fan during our Musicology show. Still makes me laugh watching all it's contents go sailing into the first 3 rows...leave your purse in the chair and just grab your wallet next time lady. lol

The Piano Medley was fantastic!!! OMG! When he went into 'Do Me, Baby', I almost slapped the two people sitting next to me. They were trying to crush my little ass at the beginning of the show....those seats in the 400s are mad close together; I was getting all claustrophobic for a while there. The girl on my right side was all ozzing into my personal bubble and the guy on my left had his back to me so his butt was rubbing on my leg a little too much for my comfort. Once I started singing all the song that neither of them knew, they both gave me lots of space and when a song came on that they didn't know I noticed they would glance over at me because I know them all. lol One idiot in our section kept yelling how he couldn't believe Prince was real and he stopped because everybody stared at him like they were going to jump his ass...didn't hear his mouth until the end of the show (probably was him smoking all that pot). Then, 'I Wanna Be Your Lover' and 'Sometime It Snows In April' love . Someone above posted a link to the piano medley from 'One Nite Alone' and this medley really didn't sound like that one...trust me, I have that one on repeat and they aren't alike; similar songs but not the same delivery at all. Both medleys are great in their own different ways IMO.

Loved that he brought 'REAL FANS' on the stage to dance in the end this time around and LOVED Cyndi blowing the roof off the Garden. I didn't know who she was so when she started singing I was like eek Damn, who is she?!?! Than I looked at her face on the monitor and realized it was her...uhh, Prince, I want to see Ms. Cyndi Lauper be your opening act on 1/18...thanks! I loved that she just blended in with all the regular fans...shows that unlike the celebrities on the 18th, Cyndi knows that she has to put her pants on one leg at a time like everybody else. What a great lady she is! bow

'Jungle Love' was fun but really wished he had just done a song from one of his newer albums instead...uhh, Prince, still waiting for 'Dance 4 Me', 'Box O Chocolates', or 'Sticky Like Glue' at least.

Love 'Uptown' and was happy he did it again because I love watching the fake 'fans' not know what the song is as I yell out all the lyrics to educate their asses. I was in Section 407 this time around and nobody in my section or Section 406 were singing along to the song so I made sure they knew if for next time. razz But, all those mofos sure know 'Raspberry Beret' and '1999' word for word. rolleyes

Seriously, once people buy the tickets, why does it matter if they get to hear the hits? Nobody knows Prince's setlists until the day of the show/during the show most of the time and by that point what are they going to do if he plays songs they've never heard? Tough shit for them if they don't want to follow his career past 'Purple Rain'. He needs to make them see his new material because you can't ask for a refund if he shows up. He could sing the Manhattan Yellow Pages and nobody can say shit about it because he showed up and performed now didn't he? I know a large amount of Britney Spears' catalog but I'm definitely not a fan of hers so I'm seriously sick of him trying to please these fair-weather fans and sick of real fans sticking up for these people. Anyone with a radio back in 1984 knows most of the Prince POP hits from that era just like they all know Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' and MJ's 'Billie Jean'...doesn't make them fans just makes them trend followers. Sorry, but he needs to do his newer material and less popular songs for at least one show for me to brag about this 'tour' to anyone.

At the end of the night, we the 'Org 6' (my name for our little group last night...love u guys! kiss2 grouphug) went to Banks' house and had a blast. Honestly, I think I had just as much fun at our personal after party than I do at the show. At least, I got to hear songs that I like that Prince doesn't seem to want to play. Heard he did an aftershow at Butter, but saw the setlist and don't think I missed anything special, but that's JMHO.

All in all, a very good show and a great night that ended at 8 this morning. Thank God I was off today. lol

[Edited 12/30/10 19:34pm]

Love that paragraph of yours when you are talking about "Fake Fans" hee hee lol

And the paragraph after that....For Real!

[Edited 12/30/10 21:38pm]

biggrin highfive Gotta tell it like it is. U don't please people who stopped FINANCIALLY supporting u after 1986. Just doesn't make any sense to me. I don't mind him doing his hit songs, but every show is a little overkill to me.

The impersonator fooled a lot of people! I was sitting in section 21, so he walked right by our section on the floor. I screamed and jumped up and down and ran down the stairs to meet him. I only stomped down one stair when "Prince" motioned me to stop. And like some kind of dog, I did! Crazy fan moment. At one point he kissed a woman's head. But I was too through when I looked closely at him, his mouth was different than Prince's. But he worked hard at that costume! White pants and jacket, glitter in his hair, dark shades, and he smelled like lavender (didn't check the shoes). Ah well. It was funny, but the chaos that ensued when he appeared kinda overpowered Mint Condition, who might have had another song. They didn't get their props because of him, which was kinda messed up. But they kinda bored me anyway lol

amazing cool stunt! i love crazy people like this, he must have created a stir, bit of excitement. from a distance u could be forgiven 4 thinking it was prince taking a chance & crowd walking/kissing!

falloff when he stole the limelight from mint condition.. not difficult. i saw them in europe & they bored me to death,

i wish this guy had been at that show! love him! well done to him!

Great show.

Opening acts:

- Mint Condition had a solid set.

- I was not familiar with her before, Janelle Monae is off the hook. She has serious vocal chops and I will be checking out her music. Thanks, Prince, for showcasing her talent.

General comments:

- Comparing tonight's show to the 12/18 concert made me realize how much more prominent the back-up singers were last time. They worked the crowd more and spent more time time alone onstage. I'm glad that wasn't the case this time around, though his duet with Shelby was good last time.

- As for tonight, the crowd was very high-energy and Prince got down. Sold out venue. I would say it was less of an old school audience, though... not so much of a traditional funk vibe --- the audience wasn't really feeling Uptown or Let's Work as much as the other songs.

My highlights:

- New Little Red Corvette arrangement. He's slowed it way down at the end so that there's a haunting "slow down" sing-along from the audience. Very cool.

- The Gingerbread Man song (sung to what started out as the Question of U) -- it was genius. He had the whole audience eating out of the palm of his hand.

- The dance solo at the end of Kiss. Leave it to Prince to come up with his own interpretive dance number --- letting it all hang free, literally.

- SAIMH. So glad he did this song, though I think most of the audience was a bit lost. I love that he brought Janelle Monae up to sing on it with him. They had fun together.

- Piano medley for encore. I'm a sucker for Prince on the keys. I just wish it were longer. He began with the instrumental of Condition of the Heart. I was shocked when that morphed into Do Me Baby. I thought his religious beliefs forbade singing that song. And I Wanna Be Your Lover, for that matter. But I'm not complaining. lol

Sidebar:

During U Got the Look, I believe, Prince unbuttoned his shirt to expose his entire chest and stomach. Now, mind you, I don't know when he last did that. He has made comments in the past about "no one wanting to look at old skin." He looked very good, but it seems he thought better of it and buttoned back up to expose only his chest, as usual. I thought that was kind of funny, though.

Final verdict:

I'm glad I went and am considering taking my sister with me to see the 3rd show as well. razz Damn, I guess I'm giving him all of my $$.

1) if janelle can sing that good why was she just screaming so bad at the bet awards?

the highlights were the same for me.the guitar solo for the question of u is my fave of his and i thought my heart skipped a few beats for that. i jumped up and down like a little kid freaking out for that. i really loved the gingerbread man lyrics for the blend of ?of u/the one. omfg? i thought the jehovah witness took away from his 80' s wild side alot but here he is singing about cum puddles... cloud9 excited that was vintage prince at msg last night!

when he laid down that gold guitar did anyone else think for a second lay ontop of it and hump it? i know a few of you said that too afterwards!!

that purple shirt is my fave so far.faint it looks just like my pillowcase! and then he unbuttons it !!! eek whoever says he's 52 is dyslexic! hot damn! what a tight little body he's still rocking! him and johnny depp both found the fountain of youth.. nod

then he get the red outfit again. after his set when i checked twitter its all girls swooning over that he had no drawers on. i hope there was someone who got a video of the kiss dance cause he was jerking his hips and you can see everything swinging around down there...i was evil joker grinning ear to ear giggling mush. there was no way to miss that. and that ass! booty! oh god i wanna rush the stage and squeeze it.

so glad to hearshe's always in my hair again. my favorite prince song!!! headbang woot! and what a tease! he did a longer little red corvette new arrangement.that's been in my head since the 17th! he was just about to say about taming your little red love machine and stops to the "slow down" LOOVE THAT VERSION

the piano medley was probably the highlight for all 4 shows so far.do me baby and i wanna be your lover!!!!!! omfg! faint

2) so i hear cloreen baconskin and joy in repetition were played at the butter aftershow. i really wanna see a aftershow cause when it first started it was pissing me off alittle cause it was all the same songs again pretty much so i see what you long time fans who seen him a billion times are coming from. but no i'd still never be sitting down with him onstage. i will forever be up dancing.

surprised he only has that one big ballet thing with misty for beautiful ones. why not rehearse at least 2 shows for a full thing like that and switch it up a bit?

3) then the great time hanging out at banks's place ! sorry i nearly nodded off the last hour or so! we played prince and his proteges till 8am!

1) Exactly! The BET performance totally undersells her talent. I had basically decided she wasn't for me after that, and I'm more open-minded than the typical BET viewer. After the concert though, I'm totally feeling her. She is mad talented.

2)CORRECTED: My original comment referenced the 2006 Butter aftershow I went to -- I didn't realize he did one on 12/29 where he performed Cloreen Baconskin. But apart from that, the setlist there wasn't too fabulous either. The bigger deal would have been the experience of being in such a small venue.

3) I'm so sad I missed ANOTHER org hangout. It sounds like you had a lot of fun together. I came and left by myself right after the concert was over, not knowing where to go. I had a good time, but would have liked to have shared it with the *kids at the cool table*. I couldn't find anything posted here. Maybe next time. biggrin

so if the artists decide 2 do a whole show of non hits ..woah ..it's the artists decision right? lol

if some dig janelle that's cool by me and totally get that perhaps new fans were made cause i sure became one of victor wooten after seeing him open up 4 prince at paisley

(Bolded part) lol Well who else's decision is it? Unless fans were invited behind closed doors to decide with Prince, what songs he should perform during a concert; and even if that was the case, I guarantee some fans would still complain about the song choices. It would be a miracle if every artist, satisfied every fan with their song choices presented at a concert. I have my faves too, that I have never heard him sing live, but who knows, maybe one day I'll get to hear him sing those favs at a show. I must say that I was satisfied with his performance of "A Question of U" with the "Gingerbread Man" lyrics. At least I got to hear the music of one of my many favorite tracks of his. Awesome performance indeed!. We may disagree and agree on a few things about his song choices/performances, but in the end, it's all good.biggrin

my review:

i was disappointed that the first act were my boys mint condition cause i really like this group and their energy. stokley playing the drums was a highlight!! and when they started singing u send me swinging i was hyped!!! pretty brown eyes bow

i am not a fan of janelle and from her performance last night i won't be either. she is a visual artist and even discussing with the gentleman i was sitting next to during her set, he even felt she was disconnecting from her audience due 2 the screens not being clear 2 see her. the sound issues during her set also left a lot 2 desire, perhaps too much reverb in the mix and echo caused this cause i couldn't understand one word she was singing.

now as 4 prince:

i was at the december 18th show, i have listened to so many of his concerts and even tho i was never there, there is the music side of prince that is unmistakable cause really it's the music that gets ur body moving and toes tapping, so all arguments of "your not there u don't know what ur talking about etc" are plain garbage. cause now i have seen this tour twice and can truly say, causal fans CRACK ME UP!! twice now i have sat in sections when prince did songs and they didn't know shit!! how the hell can u sit during uptown, let's work, and even tho i don't appreciate prince doing time songs (morris day and the time don't do computer blue now do they?) it goes 2 show that the casual fan only knows 2 albums by prince and one song from around the world in a day. this is what his long term fans are paying 4?

starting with the beautiful ones and every show so far contains this song mostly do 2 misty copeland and going through the same old lgc etc was interesting in seeing how the crowd reacts caus it's like all they know. I REALLY THOGUHT PRINCE WOULD SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE DEATH OF TEENA MARIE AND I WAS CORRECT THO HOPING HE WOULD ALLOW THE LADIES AND IDA 2 JAM ON SQUARE BIZ WOULD HAVE BEEN A TREAT AND A HALF! but i loved the dedication 2 her after uptown. hearing she's always in my hair was cool and so was if i was your girlfriend but having janelle pop up during that song ..smh!! she didn't know the song at all and i could tell that prince was hoping she would have busted in2 the second verse hence he grabbed the mic back.

something was off about prince and crew tho if one would compare it to the 18th show and others accounts of the jersey shows. he wasn't dancing like crazy this time around and the band wasn't as tight as previously. shelby, elisa and liv weren't as interactive as well, maybe because of the setlist material who knows but it was just off somehow. even the lighting of the stage wasn't popping as i have seen it b4. speaking of setlist material.. WHERE WAS THE FUNK? pretty much all the songs done last night were pop hits. i was waiting 4 that kick me upside my head moment that never came. maybe this was due 2 some speculation that Egypt was going 2 do when doves cry or just based from the songs in the back of the tour book that still have yet 2 be played but that could be saved for the 18th. and the comments about "it cracks me up that those complain about the shows and how it's crazy 2 think prince is playing just 4 u" well as a consumer do u not have the right 2 state if u enjoyed something or dislike something? a friend of mine pointed out this true fact about another major artist of our time, they did arena shows and showcased material of their latest project 2 the masses and has lesser cataloge material than prince, so why can't prince do the same and bring forth his more "leeser known material" 2 the general public? it's called BUSINESS SENSE!! where has that prince gone that took charge and played what he wanted 2 and not cater 2 the system?

in also hearing about the jersey shows that prince has played past 11 pm and even prince commented about the crazy curfew, i am hoping now that on the 18th there is no opening act so that he can do a 2 hour plus show.

another concern of mine is prince's use of a telepromter and what is baffling 2 me. he's done these songs so many times, why the need 4 the lyrics 2 be beamed onto his piano during the piano medley i don't understand why. if they contained lyrics 2 songs he doesn't do enough of then i can understand.

highlights 4 me wasn't so much about the show but really it was about seeing people i haven't seen since the xenophobia celebration. and how we wore the one night alone shirts unconciously. the friends i have come 2 know and hang out with b4 and after the show ..wow u guys are awesome!!!

all those great jams we were singing and dancing to at banks place till 8am!!he should play those jams live!

HELL YEAH!!

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Okay, first, the show was G-R-E-A-T!!!! I loved it. My first time being in Madison Square Garden, my 15th Prince show and a first for my honey who went with me. What was cool was there were a lot of my friends who are indie musicians that came to check him out as well. A few of them told me they wanted to see him live and study him. That's what I'm talking about. I'm telling you Prince inspires so many. Highlights for me:

  • The new version of Little Red Corvette,
  • The Beautiful Ones
  • If I Was Your Girlfriend-oh how I love this song live
  • Question of U with the Gingerbread man take on it,
  • She's Always in My Hair-first time hearing it live
  • COOL-always a party song, Uptown, How Come You Don't Call Me, the piano medley's of Do Me Baby and I Wanna Be Your Lover.
  • Prince opening his shirt-ALL THE WAY razz -YES!!!! And him being a little more sexual these days, telling that fan "can I touch you there" and all that. lol

Janelle Monae won me over, she is great and I want her CD, and as always Mint Condition, oh that band is sooooo tight!!!!! I love it.

I know a lot of fans complain about the setlist, but I went to the December 17 IZOD show and though some songs are similar the two shows feel different. The IZOD show had its own vibe and so did the December 29th show which is why I enjoyed and happy I went to both.

What was funny did you catch when Mint condition was performing and their Bassist was singing lead is it me or the Mike terrible or he can't sing Because I could barely hear him?

Now do you really think if it was Prince, that he's going to like someone screaming, jumping and running down stairs at him? Yeah, he's going to sit there and talk to you after that. I get that folks get excited when they see him, but don't scare the poor guy! As soon as someone does that, his bodyguards come and wisk him away to keep him safe from the crazies.

The impostor

I'll admit, for a hot quick second when I 1st saw him, it threw me for a loop. After 2 seconds my brain kicked in and I truly saw. Can't blame a girl for wishing! wink

I gotta give him this much, the man truly committed to something and he followed thru. I was wondering where he ended up sitting after all that moving around the sections. razz

Actually, I believe the music overpowered his vocals at times, so there was quite a few sound issues during their performance.

Cool report. I also enjoyed the slowed-down version of "Little Red Corvette."

Honestly, I was wondering how Prince's concert was important enough for the Empire Sate Building... lol

My reaction would be the complete opposite; it should be lit for Prince because who the fuck cares about Syracuse and a stupid bowl game I've never even heard of? lol

The only reason it rated at all was because it happened at Yankee Stadium. rolleyes

Don't care about any kind of sports and in particular, any obnoxious NY teams or facilities. So to me, it's silly to light that building for anything related to a stupid game. rolleyes

Prince Performs Killer Show With Help From Janelle Monáe, Cyndi Lauper

Setlist at Madison Square Garden included big hits and deep cuts

http://www.rollingstone.c...r-20101230

Prince performed the second of three concerts at Madison Square Garden as part of his Welcome 2 America mini-tour last night — with a little help from fellow '80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper and the up-and-coming R&B star Janelle Monáe.

Monáe, who performed an opening set earlier in the evening, guested on the Sign O' the Times single "If I Was Your Girlfriend" in the first encore. (Afterwards, Monáe tweeted, "We played MSG w/ Prince And I have no words to describe. Hvkffkkfflkccnhjkfjlk Ghklgserolfdjkfh Chjffjfdhjggj.") Later in the show, Lauper joined Prince and radio host Egypt Sherrod for the night's closing number, a rendition of "Jungle Love," a 1984 single he co-wrote with The Time.

As with previous dates on the Welcome 2 America tour, the setlist was primarily focused on material from the artist's run of classic albums in the 1980s, including the huge hits "Let's Go Crazy," "1999," "Little Red Corvette," "Raspberry Beret," "U Got the Look," "Purple Rain" and "Kiss."

This particular show was notable for the addition of several deep cuts, such as the Graffiti Bridge ballad "The ? of U," the B side "She's Always in My Hair," and a piano medley featuring "Condition of the Heart," "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" and "Sometimes It Snows in April."

I have had such a fantastic time the last few weeks with Prince in town and Wednesday's show just added to the fun! I brought my friend Dean to the show and I was hoping that it would be off da chain for him and sure enough it was for both of us!!! It was great to see Prince change it up and start with The Beautiful Ones. It was different and I loved that. I really enjoy Prince's new arrangement of Little Red Corvette. That was just classy right there. I love hearing him do Uptown and the fact that he dedicated it to Teena Marie was just kick ass right there. The Gingerbread Man song was just FIYAH!!!!! I'm a man and I was excited as hell with that song! lol It was classic Prince. But my favorite part of the whole show was the Piano Medley. I freaked when he did Condition of the Heart. I just wish he has sang a lyric or two, but then he did Do Me Baby and that was great to see him do that again but then he went into I Wanna Be Your Lover and I lost it. I've never seen him do that song live before and when he sang "I ain't go no money" I nearly cried cause I've always wanted to see him perform this song and I finally got my prayers answered! Then he did How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore and Sometimes it Snows in April and I was on cloud 9! The whole show kicked ass. My friend Dean said that he was the baddest and that it was the best show he's ever seen and that alone was worth it! It was great to see friends and meet people from here. I hope to see and meet more people on Jan 18th. I'm leaving 2010 on a purple high and I'm going into 2011 with that same high. I just love me some Prince!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
