btw there was a group of about 30 people right behind the celebs doing the electric slide to one of the songs. i just know that if prince noticed that he would have certainly said something interesting. lmao.

he was on the opposite side of the stage for that moment. lol

I went Wed night and that show was nowhere as good as any of the 3 Musicology shows that I attended. At times it was great but not being on stage for 2 awful songs kinda put a damper on things. Also I think he was better on the last tour with a second guitar player and the horns feat Maceo. I miss the acoustic portion and also the sets were longer. That being said I'm still looking forward to going to the next 2 shows at MSG. I hope Sheila shows up again. As for Kanye West, and any other celebs, who cares?

mike scott was the 2nd guitarist. i missed him too. it fills the sound out. i miss candi, maceo and greg boyer as well. i loved that horn section.

i thought the bassist tonight was fantastic, but there is only one rhonda and she is funky!!!

Was tonight's show shorter than the other nights so far?

Was there a tour book given out?

Best show ever. Prince at the top of his game. Brought the 80s Minnynfunk with updated sound. SYNTHS!!! SHEILA!!!! C..O...O...L!!

The outfit for Kiss was genius. Evoked the video (red sequins even tho technically that's not what he wore in the vid)

The acoustic horn section from musicology was schmalzy. SynthBrass plus Eric is the best H-O-H-E-N Section smile

Interestingly the rhythm guitar lick on Kiss was triggered by John B on a drum pad. The extended section ruled. It was one of the best versions live but the key sounded strange.

And Larry Graham was good. The jam with P on everyday people was fun b also kind of a mess. If you paid attention, at times some folks on stage didn't what they were doing LOL!

I loved the show, I thought it was fantastic.... something was missing tho... And I was upset that it ended at 11 and not 11:30 or so like the Jersey shows did. I wanted more Sheila. And I could have cared LESS about all the celebs he dragged up on stage. Who cares? They always get prime shit anyway, he shoulda gave that moment to the fans.

That red outfit he wore for Kiss??? LAWD have MERCY!!! I hope someone somewhere has some still shots of that cause I ... just... WOW. Too much!

Bria was indeed there. She was also with him at the afterparty.

Overall I enjoyed myself and had a great time, I guess I was just expecting more. I dunno. I'm not knocking it tho, it was a great experience, I'll never forget it. I was considering buying tickets for the Jan 18th show, but I think I won't. Once was good enough for me.

Yes tonights show was shorter
There was a tour book avail 4 purchase $30
As far as which show was the best thus far IMO I could take certain elements from each show - Wed night's duet of If I was your girlfriend with Esperanza Friday night song choices the surprise of Sheila E especially the 3 encores tonight I enjoyed Sinbad and Larry Graham his entrance alone just hyped up the evening even more (they entered the Garden as a drum core and marched around the stage first awesome)and P joining in on Everyday People up the crowd to a frenzy then the main show was good (tell me COOL wasn't hot!?) but like everyone is saying I felt cheated with one encore( I looked like a fool telling the people in my section not leave yet, even though it truly was over sad)I have to agree that I enjoyed Musicology more I was hoping Maceo or Candy would just surprise us all. The celeb thing is a guarantee for any top performer performing at the Garden usually turns into a who's who... it saved a Jay Z show when R. Kelly went crazy on stage and the Improv performances by the celebs in the audience made the show unforgettable

That's very strange. I wonder why he didn't do more than one encore...Someone said something about the fact that you have to leave Msg by 11 or something like that. Considering that this show was the first to sold out, I wonder why it was the shortest. I kinda wished I went to the opening show now because it seems like it had the longest setlist. sad

i think the garden has a strict 11 pm rule. it's run by the union and if you go ot oh my god the money ot costs.

then again he could have always worked out a deal.

i would venture to guess that for the future shows he will work a deal out with the union.

even with the minny synth sound he always had a 2nd guitarist. whether it be wendy, jesse johnson, mike scott and so on.

blackwell did trigger the guitar part for kiss by hitting the top right pad on his roland, but that was just for the beginning part.

no matter going to a prince concert is an experience that shouldn't be missed by anyone.

Everyone here pretty much gave a good report of what went down. In the beginning of Prince's segment of the show, Prince and the band opened with a song called "Welcome2America", which is apparently a track with a socio-political tone. I have to say though, that Prince kicked NYC's ass last night at MSG with his performance, as he mopped, swept, waxed and shined the funk out of MSG last night, while seducing and teasing the audience in that red hot, sexy outfit he had on, and the moves he made in

it--lawd have mercy ladies and gents--I'm just sayin' lol It kind of felt like he took us back to the Lovesexy era for a minute. I also loved the version of "Kiss" he sang during the performance.

Prince worked every corner of the stage the entire night, as well as, the back part of the stage, where some fans had concerns, that he may not frequent that location during the show. He was definitely in high energy at MSG. He had the majority of the audience on their feet most of the show. I loved the black cape he had on when he came out to jam with Larry Graham, during Larry's performance. It was similar to the one Janelle Monae wears when she performs. His performance of "The Beautiful Ones" was awesome and ballet dancer, Misty Copeland dancing while he sang that song, helped to top the performance.

Prince and Larry brought a double-dose of funk when they jammed together. I have to say, I was impressed with Larry's bass playing, and the appreciation he received from the audience. He kicked that bass' ass all over MSG last night. The funk was so dense from his bass playing, foot spray and disinfectant would not have had a chance in clearing that funk out. I have more appreciation and respect for him as a bass player/musician, especially one who played with Sly and the Family Stone, and was part of some great hits/classics from an era where so many socio-political events were happening at that time. Larry proved and is is definitely the King of bass and funk, no question.

One of the nicest moments of the show, was the duet with Prince and Shelby singing, "Nothing Compares 2 U" and how they performed it. It was not hard to notice the respect and appreciation among their friendship. I also have to give Shelby, Elisa and Liv a hand, because they too "worked the stage", every part of it, hyping the audience as well. I loved the large, gold fans all 3 ladies were waving while singing on some of the songs, as they stood by the piano at one point. Their harmonizing is so on point.

Sheila E came onto the stage like the beautiful Queen she knows she is, wearing an eye-catching, fitted, gold and black dress with a short train. She had the audience in awe when she graced us with her presence and performance, and naturally as always, NY gave her love. Always good to see Sheila E as part of Prince's concerts. One funny part, was when Sheila E came back out, after she changed into pants, and she handed Prince her jacket, and he walked away with it to find somewhere to lay it, and when he laid it down on the bench, (Edited this part thanks to orger "Efan" clarifying what Prince said-->) Prince said "Don't sit on this" to Renato:lol:

As for the celebrities, it was hilarious when Prince called Sherri Shepherd on stage, he told her to come up on stage, and then said "Oh no not Sherri Shepherd!", to Sheila E, and jokingly played like he was about to run away, but came back and said (paraphrasing) "Sherri, come up here and show us what you really want to do!" Earlier during his performance, he gave Sherri a shoutout during one of his songs, so those of you who were in the PM&M forum a couple of days back, criticizing her over that statement she made to him, it was apparent last night, that Prince appreciates Sherri Shepherd and apparently had no problem calling her on stage last night.

There was quite the celebrities there, Prince and Sheila E called up Dr. Cornel West, ?uestlove, Naomi Campbell, Sherri Shepherd . Then other celebs got up there--Alicia Keys, Spike Lee, AJ Calloway, and more. Also, Bria Valente got on stage to dance as well, and she looked very pretty, in a sparkling, black dress with an open back. They were all having a good time. I saw some fans complained that it was because of the celebs that he didn't do another encore, but I believe it was the 11pm curfew is why there was no second encore, and it was already around 10:45pm when the celebs were called on stage, so no I don't think there would have been another encore regardless. A friend of mine text'd me, who had a friend who worked there to let her know, that was it for the night.

Good show;good performance, high energy. I have to say that anywhere you sat, other than the VIP/floor seats, you had a good view, thanks to the jumbo screens, which although I was sitting in the promenade 100s section, the big screens helped a lot, and you were able to have a very, good view of what was going on onstage. Can't wait to see what they bring on 29th at MSG!headbang

He did it on the Roland pad throughout. It's just that one riff at the end of the 8 bars. Cassandra looked like she was doing a rhythm part on a clavinet like synth sound throughout.

Yes Madison Square Garden is a UNION House like every other venue in NY. 11pm all acts have to be off the stage. So thats why NJ shows got the 3rd encores. Fridays show at NJ set wise was better the energy at MSG was BETTER!! Fridays private after show in the suite was nice all friends & family. Small jazz club like vibe with the musicians coming in and switching roles. Shelby J sister sat in on drums after Sheila E. Cassandra Wilson and her band members played also along with Larry Graham. Shelby J sung D'Angelo's Chicken Grease, Elisa sang the Isley Brothers Living For The Love of You. Larry Graham did Hair. Prince did The One & Joy In Repetition.
Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Really? Sounds like it went down pretty good. I kind of figured with all the celebrities that was at the main show, that there was going to eventually be some kind of private event specifically for them. Thanks for the info.

Absolutely. It was apparent he took no offense to what she said on the view. He acknowledged her presence at the show earlier in the evening last night, when he called out her name, during one of his performances, and lly joked around with her at MSG when he specifically called her up to the stage to dance. Wouldn't surprise me if he heard about all the unnecessary flack Sherri caught from fans, criticizing her for what she said, when in fact, didn't seem to bother Prince at all and was no big deal to him. Anyway I had a great time last night at MSG. I'm still sleepy after the fun last night. My eyes are slantier than they normally are right now from lack of sleep. lol I had people texting me during the show, and after the show, up until 2 am, about any aftershow info, and I appreciate how well they kept in touch trying to find out or share that info, about a possible aftershow. I even heard from some Prince fans, I haven't seen in over 3 years, who still had my phone number, which I was so happy to hear from.

It's always fun to be at a Prince concert at MSG, because it's always high energy there. NYC was so congested with people traffic in the 34th street area, it was ridiculous. So many tourists here around the holiday, as well as , New Yorkers out doing holiday shopping. I swear you would think that we're not gong through hard economic times here, the way folks was out spending this weekend. It will be more people here during the week of the 29th show, so I'm preparing myself for that.lol

Everyone here pretty much gave a good report of what went down. In the beginning of Prince's segment of the show, Prince and the band opened with a song called "Welcome2America", which is apparently a track with a socio-political tone. I have to say though, that Prince kicked NYC's ass last night at MSG with his performance--he mopped, sweeped, waxed and shined the funk out of MSG last night, while seducing and teasing the audience in that red hot, sexy outfit he had on, and the moves he made in it. Lawd have mercy ladies and gents... I'm just sayin'.lol It kind of felt like he took us back to the Lovesexy era for a minute. I loved that version of "Kiss" he sang as well. He worked every corner of that stage the entire night, even the back part of the stage, that some fans thought he would not come near or that they would not get a chance to see him. He was definitely in high energy at MSG. He had the majority of the audience on their feet most of the show. I loved the black cape he had on when he came out to jam with Larry Graham, during Larry's performance. It was similar to the one Janelle Monae wears when she performs. His performance of "The Beautiful Ones" was awesome and the Misty Copeland dancing while he sang that song, helped to top the performance off.

I have even more appreciation and respect for him as a bass player/musician, especially one who played with Sly and the Family Stone, and was part of some great hits/classics from an era where so many socio-political events were happening at the time. Larry proved and is is definitely the King of bass and funk, no question.

One of the nicest moments of the show, was the duet with Prince and Shelby singing, "Nothing Compares 2 U" and how they performed. It was not hard to notice the respect and appreciation among their friendship. I also have to give Shelby, Elisa and Liv a hand, because they too "worked the stage", every part of it, hyping the audience.

One funny part, was when Sheila E came back out, after she changed into pants, and she handed Prince her jacket, and he walked away with it to find somewhere to lay it, and when he laid it down on the bench, he told the camera guys (paraphrasing) "Don't film this part".lol

As for the celebrities, it was hilarious when Prince called Sherri Shepherd on stage, he told her to come up and then said "Oh no not Sherri Shepherd!", to Sheila E, and jokingly played like he was about to run away, but came back and said (paraphrasing) "Sherri, come up here and show us what you really want to do!". Earlier during his performance, he gave Sherri a shoutout during one of his songs, so those of you who were in the PM&M forum a couple of days back, criticizing her over that statement she made to him, it was apparent last night, that Prince appreciates Sherri Shepherd and apparently had no problem calling her on stage last night. There were quite the celebrities there, Prince and Sheila E called up Dr. Cornel West,

?uestlove, Naomi Campbell, Sherri Shepherd . Then other celebs got up there--Alicia Keys, Spike Lee, AJ Calloway, and more. Also, Bria Valente got on stage to dance as well, and she looked very pretty, in a sparkling, black dress with an open back. They were all having a good time. I saw some fans complained that it was because of the celebs that he didn't do another encore, but I believe it was the 11pm curfew is why there was no encore, and it was already around 10:45pm when the celebs were called on stage, so no I don't think there would have been another encore regardless. A friend of mine text me who had a friend who worked there to let her know that was it for the night.

^^great review.

Thanks! Also, they had some nice tshirts and posters. The one with Prince in front of the controversy album pic was selling like hotcakes. I had to go across the room to the other counter to pick up two, because they sold out of it at the first counter. It's an awesome image. It definitely displays the message of the "Then and Now" Prince. Beautiful pic of him.

Wow! I can't believe this is actually my first post here even though I've been registered for over six years. Anyway, I just wanted to comment on the 11:00 pm curfew. I've gone to quite a few concerts at MSG that ended after 11pm. Most unions have rules as to what time overtime kicks in, so I'm guessing for the MSG unions, it's 11. It's not like the police would have barged in at 11 to clear the place out. I know for some venues (e.g. the Metropolitan Opera) overtime kicks in as 12. My guess is that Prince would have been responsible for any overtime costs so it was his choice to end the show early.

Agree, but for all those that thought there was going to be another encore last night, according to a friend who has a friend that works at MSG, she was told by that worker by a txt msg she sent him at the ending of the show, that there was no plan for another encore and that the show was done for the night. biggrin

princeGood review! I wasn't there and knew that the curfew was the reason he didn't have another encore. People here all they think about is themselves and the Sherri incident is totally blown out of proportion. Prince knew Sherri was a fan and didn't take offense to her reaction. People always create unnecessary drama. Anywho I wish I was there lol

[Edited 12/19/10 8:49am]

[Edited 12/19/10 9:21am]

princeExactly! Also people been complaining here about the same & short setlist."Uptown" & "Cream" he rarely performs live. "Cool" is new to the setlist. Didn't he perform the full versions of each song?

Prince rarely does that which brings the songs out more with adding new arrangements to them.Which cuts the setlist. Plus the big arena shows are for the casual fans that like to hear the classics not the rarities.........Most here don't recognize that or even care to.prince
