Hey you, don't be so quick to worship.. hammerlol The thing is, no fan is required to go to a show where they constantly complain about the same artist playing some of his hits, they don't want to hear. It's the fans that made those same hits, classics. So always expect you will hear some of those songs played at his shows. Besides, most of the time, many of those classics are not played the same way, when he does perform it.

I don't get some of these fans who complain to no end about the same thing, but next thing you know, they're running out to buy a ticket to his next show. Kind of defeats the seriousness of their (your) complaints when you do that.

That's kind of like someone complaining about a weekly tv show, but will still turn the channel to watch that same show, on a weekly basis and sometimes even taping it, so they won't miss it.lol Guess we'll see you on the 29th at his next show. I mean you did say you were going to be there in a few posts up on this thread...right? teddylol (Just messin' with ya!)

i haven't seen prince live since the musicology show 4 this one reason (and all props 2 estelle 81 while on the phone with her reading this post and i quote what she said) "if i made 2 pitchers of kool aid, one with less sugar and one with more sugar, is it still the same kool aid?" but i have heard almost every concert he's done since i have seen him tho so my musical ears are more open than the visual one. now yes musically a different arrangement can spice a song up or flatten it, but it's still the same song. Classics are not just "hits" there are classic songs like crucial, electric intercourse, still would stand all time, the question of u, and so forth that mean a lot 2 his fans that he doesn't do but instead he will constantly do 1999. the song that really made prince was when doves cry and he hardly does that song. if there are fans that can go 2 every show and never get tired of hearing him do let's go crazy, god bless u, it's just not me. i like 2 have spaghetti every now and then instead of my steak. i understand ur analogy of the tv show and u have a point, but not every episode is a masterpiece tho.

bow

Just because you don't agree with Prince's setlists doesn't mean you don't respect him as the great musician that he is. I made a comment in another thread on the non-Prince board about how much I love Janet Jackson. I said that if I ever met her I would cry and probably pee myself from the excitement but if someone was to tell me, "You know Janet isn't a good vocalist", my reply to them would be, 'You're right. She's not.' That doesn't mean I love her any less; it just means I'm not lying to myself and anyone else about what's so blatantly obvious. Sometimes the truth hurts and nobody wants to hear it, but it's still the truth.

Sorry, but I don't want to eat the same thing everyday and routines annoy me in general, so why the hell would I want to go to more than one Prince show and hear the same songs over and over again when I know that he has hundreds of amazing songs that he can choose from besides those. More power to all those who don't like change and love the same thing over and over again, but I'm just not that person and never will be. Change equals growth and if you do the same thing all the time, you aren't growing.

I look forward to a Prince tour like the One Night Alone tour or even another Musicology. Sure, he played the hits on the Musicology tour, but he also played a nice amount of songs from the Musicology album and some rare gems that he hadn't done in a while. The Musicology show I went to was in a smaller venue than MSG and wasn't completely sold out, yet it was 10 times better than this show JMHO. Still love that little man. He knows I can't stay mad at him for long. giggle

So even if he played the songs you mentioned, you don't think some other fans, would not complain that he doesn't play his other clasiics, not usually performed at some of his latest shows? lol I'll be honest, even if Prince played his rare tracks, sang new ones, like he did back in 2006/2007 with '"3121" and "Planet Earth", how many of the casual fans actually knew some of those songs, other than his diehard fans? At Bryant Park, it was the diehard fans, that was singing along to "3121", not the casual or new fans. I could see that happening at an arena show with fans there looking lost, like I witnessed at Bryant Park in 2006.

Remember when he played "3121" on a BET award show, and some of his diehard fans complained he should have played "something familiar" because, it was obvious many in the audience, at that show was not familiar with his new stuff? It actually would have been better if he played a song many in that audience was familiar with, then he should have broke into a new track from the 3121 album, a bit later during that performance. Let me repeat this though, no one said that everyone has to like every song Prince sings during any of these shows, I think that's where you got sidetracked in the conversation. I believe the tracks you mention are appreciated more at the smaller events, like aftershows, private shows where most of the diehard fans show up, who are more familiar with the classics you mentioned.biggrin

clapping Bolded part. Very good point about how to introduce the new songs that way to the crowd, something a lot of artists do.

When Prince sang "The Beautiful Ones," he had Misty Copeland dancing as well (soloist with American Ballet Theater). She's just fabulous.

nod That was an amazing performance. She and Prince looked soo nice together. I loved his chemistry with Sheila too and when him and Shelby started breaking it down...WHAT!!!! I was yelling, 'Get It! Get It!' They did the damn thing.

Seems to me that if he is shortening his performance time due to these multiple opening acts, here is an idea, CUT THOSE BACK! Or start earlier and maybe on time. From previous posts, there are people out there who are excited to see some of these folks that he is promoting or whatever, but most of the folks come to see a Prince concert so if the fact that Lala whover and Maceo are having opening sets which are taking up too much time then cut it to one per night and give the folks who and what they really came and paid for.

As far as fatigue about the setlist, congrats to him for doing full versions but I think most folks understand the staples that need to be played but some of the other choices of secondary hits could be adjusted. As dramatic as SHHH is, why is that a concert standard now over even say The Beautiful Ones of some other powerful ballad. I don't believe the casual fan knows SHHH so if that is the case and this kind of song is for the hard core folks then mix it up, play Empty Room or something, you have full creative license if you are playing this for us "freaks". Maybe take some time to introduce a couple of songs from 2010 and play those, but verbally introduce the new songs to the crowd and they may adjust their ability to hear something new and it may spark some interest but don't just blindly play brand new stuff as folks won't even know what it is of where it came from. There are very easy ways for him to make this tour and any tour maximally enjoyable for the hard core folks as well as the casual "Purple Rain" fans. Also, I thinks shows in NYC, LA are always tough on us fans cuz I always feel like he goes out of his way to impress and cater to celebrities who many are there just to be seen.

For those who completly enjoyed this show, I could not be happier for you and the time you had but it just seems that some of the concerns voiced were valid. Hope he is listening, haha and tweaks the show and prepares to take it across the country!!!

yeahthat What really surprised me with last nights show was how Sinbad's routine seemed almost longer than Larry Graham's. I felt bad for them because there were soo many empty seats during their performances and they were both good opening acts. sad I definitely am not saying he shouldn't play his hits because that would be a little nuts but a equal amount of hits to new songs to rarities would be nice. Like someone posted above, he should just announce the new songs before he plays them so people will know what they are called. It has the potential of making the casual fan a more dedicated fan in the long run. nod

The Musicology show I went to was in a smaller venue than MSG and wasn't completely sold out, yet it was 10 times better than this show JMHO.

I have to agree that last night's concert wasn't fresh or new and I'm a little disappointed. I paid for $200 tix. I didn't have the benefit of meeting up with any folks from the org before or after the show, which it seems a bunch of you had fun doing. sad

I've seen a number of Prince concerts in the past several years -- Vegas, Musicology (twice), private party in NYC (4 hrs of perfection). I'd say that last night's was only better than the Vegas show but only b/c MSG has so much damn energy which is great.

As has been said, adding new songs, when they're actually GOOD, is something we should be expecting from an artist as prolific as Prince. That worked on the Musicology tour b/c that was a good album. I don't think it would work if the new material is from albums like 3121 or LotusFlower, which aren't very accessible to people (or very good, in my opinion). It seems it could work with material from 20Ten. On that note... does anybody know why the 20Ten album wasn't released in the US and why this tour wasn't used to promote it? I understand it got great reviews in Europe where it was released.

That said, I'm debating if I should go to the 29th show since I've got the tix. I do recall that Prince stated at his press conference that folks should come often because each show would be different. I don't hold my breath for that one. Frankly, I'm having a hard time summoning up enthusiasm for it. If I do go, I'll try to see if I can meet up with some orgers to increase my chances of having a good time!

Come here, babe.. yeah...

This show was off the chain!!! I only sat down for 2 seconds and this girl beat me up and ordered me to get back up! I was down in VIP (Section B, Row D, Seat 11). This was an excellent seat and gave me a good view of everything. A multitude of celebs in area as well (Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Sheppard, Naomi Campbell, Spike Lee, ?uestlove, Sinbad, Larry Graham & his lovely wife). The energy was off the meter in our section. We were dancing our asses off. I had 4 Bria Valente sightings and she's a very beautiful woman indeed razz . Prince ruled over us as he knew he would from the first note of the evening. There was this beautiful young lady behind me who was crying during 'Purple Rain'. It was her birthday(she turned 30) and this was her first Prince concert ever. She told me she never thought she'd get to hear him sing 'Purple Rain' live. I put my arm around her and we sang the ad libs together. I told her that this was very special because Prince very rarely plays the entire song as he did last night. Happy Birthday indeed! Prior to the show I had dinner and drinks with fellow org members and it was great. We all connected instantly and wound up hanging out after the show! It was definitely a beautiful night.

4 the past couple of years all i have been told was 'oh l4 u weren't there 2 know how it was so i don't know why ur "hating" so much"

WELL

I WAS THERE LAST NIGHT AT THE GARDEN AND I CAN TELL U NOW THAT I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN PRINCE SO MUCH LAST NIGHT!!

now this isn't just a slam or "negative" review cause there were some nice moments

HIGHLIGHTS:

prince has always had a nice lighting system 4 his shows and last night was no exception. THE STAGE IS HOT!!! I LOVE IT!! the lighting design was HOT!!! and from where my seats were in the so called "nosebleeds" i was able 2 see everything happening on that stage prior 2 a lot of folks at the garden, including when during graham central stations set, i saw prince hop up b4 the lights hit his area. and the same when sheila e came out during u got the look, clear as day could see her about 2 pop up.

graham central station and larry's bass playing was HOT!!

hearing the new song Welcome 2 America was HOT!! just wished that the lights weren't out during the song or that prince could have been on stage visible

Shhh ..JOHN BLACKWELL bow AND FINALLY A prince song!! John's drumstics were either laser, LED or glow in the dark..HOT!!!

Hearing uptown live finally ..HOT ..tho it sucks that many didn't know that song but wanna scream 4 raspberry beret ...SERIOUSLY?!!!

Prince's energy was very high and it was nice seeing him dance more and have his "billie jean" moment during kiss

Ida looked HOT!! i swear prince must have pulled her 2 the side and said "look ur funky on the bass but the jeans and t shirt thing..AIN'T HAPPENING in my band"

NOT SO HOT MOMENTS:

seriously ur gonna invite just celebs on the stage and not ur true fans? tho seeing alicia keys on stage was a nice treat

seriously ur gonna play disco heat but not dance 4 me or even the dance electric? ur gonna play that shit? wow!!

what happend 2 the days of prince having his band members have a spot light and say their names through the course of the show?

and the rest of the setlist ..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz damn is this the same prince that i grew up with?

BONUS MOMENTS

meeting up with banks ..yo bro 4 blocks down ..u should have said 4 blocks across as well lol

estelle81 ..finally!!! hug

bbq's!!! damn i want some wings now lol

meeting up at the apollo afterwards seeing pri, newpowersoul

and last but not least ..seeing my girl npggirl77!! Mwah!! get home safe hun!!

what i take from this experinece is the joy of seeing old friends and meeting new ones, but prince seriously ..u need 2 step up ur game again son and go back 2 the prince that belived in the new music and took it by the horses mane and rode it and didn't give a shit what anyone else thinks about it

lol hug I know right! I must say that it was a pleasure being in the presence of soo many gentlemen last night. Thank you guys soo much for looking out for us ladies. grouphug I had a ball all night despite being a little less than impressed by the setlist. It was a fun show and the energy in MSG was off the richter scale. NYC welcomed Prince with open arms and he obliged us nicely. My throat still hurts from all the screaming and I'm just now able to have some sensation in my left big toe (damn sexy boots lol ) Did I mention my second hand high from all the potheads in our section? I had contact high like a mutha for a hot minute with my $10 beer. Musicology was better but this was a magical show as well and Prince knows I love his ass...seriously, I love his ASS. That man has the ass of a 20-year old. drool okay, straying off subject but yeah, great life experience that will stay in my heart and memory recesses for the rest of my days. mushy

I LOVE IT!! the lighting design was HOT!!! and from where my seats were in the so called "nosebleeds" i was able 2 see everything happening on that stage prior 2 a lot of folks at the garden, including when during graham central stations set, i saw prince hop up b4 the lights hit his area. and the same when sheila e came out during u got the look, clear as day could see her about 2 pop up.

graham central station and larry's bass playing was HOT!!

hearing the new song Welcome 2 America was HOT!! just wished that the lights weren't out during the song or that prince could have been on stage visible

BONUS MOMENTS

meeting up with banks ..yo bro 4 blocks down ..u should have said 4 blocks across as well lol

estelle81 ..finally!!! hug

lol hug I know right! That man has the ass of a 20-year old. drool okay, straying off subject but yeah, great life experience that will stay in my heart and memory recesses for the rest of my days. mushy

It was our pleasure and privilege to have you ladies with us last night!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Good to see you too ol' friend. Shame there was no aftershow--would have been the perfect cap/complement to the evening.

And your review was not as brutal as I expected it to be LOL.

spit Yeah, some people seriously must have thought they were at their house the way they were smoking it up in there. They really refused to buy that over-priced alcohol and since you can't sneak bottles or containers in, pot was the next option. A security guy came to us before the show started and told us no pictures or videotaping and then aded, "It's Prince's rule" and rolled his eyes. My roommate looked at him, laughed and said, "Oh that little man" and the security guard was like, "Oh yeah, he is super little", laughed and walked away. Guess he got to meet Prince. I took pictures anyway even though they suck because I have a shitty camera. sad

You should definitely go on the 29th. He may surprise you with something different and Janelle Monae and Mint Condition are going to be there. I really want to go and if I can get permission to leave work early and can find a cheap ticket I may just head on over. Will be checking craigslist and ebay in the next few days. nod The showmanship was definitely there last night so he didn't disappoint at all in that area.

damn u really need 2 watch that tape again then cause then u would see that the stage at the superbowl was black and not the color it is now ..lawd u crack me up but that's what fanatics do always talking out their side of the ass ..next time try to take some exlax

dude you really dont know production, thats the same stage...

the stage has flooring that is removeable and changeable it can be black one day, blue the next or whatever color he chooses. why spend money on a new stage show when he can roll out the stage and add new elements to the floor of the stage.

i bet you didnt notice the monitors step up around the stage with the lyrics scrolled on them.

Not the same stage.

I was on the field for the SB and all of the rehearsals. The SB stage was longer and a bit taller. Plus the walkway is wider and the lights are above the surface instead of recessed into the floor.

The band area in the circle is deeper on this stage too. The MSG stage is more similar to the London stage.

Is that proper to stand up during Prince's concert?

I really pissed off actually! Didn't enjoy the 18th show.

There was 2 ladies behind me, and they were holding the binocle, and never stand up, even never clap their hands!

When I stood up at the song "uptown", One of them complained to me, said she can't see anything, and required me to sit down!

When Prince finished "Purple Rain", they left. And I was really glad they left! Because I know they will miss the most exciting song "Kiss".

I saw 15th and 17th show, I really enjoyed those 2 shows, even I didn't have good view(the big symbol stage in front me, and it's too tall), but there were no weird people behind me. I never thought about leave because I know Prince will sing "Kiss" after "purple rain", same as 15th and 17th at IZOD.

I'll go to 29th show also, hope this will never happened! It was such a bad area, not only me feel sick of them. We're not seeing a movie, We're seeing Prince. How can we sit and be funky. mad

You can't sit and be funky. My rule with any event is that if the people in front of me stand, I stand. If I'm in the front row and people are up dancing, I'll get up and dance. If nobody else wants to dance but me or if I'm the first one to get up I'll go and stand somewhere nearby where I'm not in the way.

Don't let anyone bad vibe you about dancing at a concert where other people are dancing. If the people behind you complain, politely tell them to go ahead and get security. You're not in the wrong. If security gives you a hard time tell them to make the other 5000 people sit down and you will comply. Otherwise, ask them to let you go to an area where other people are dancing. That has actually worked for me before.
