Thanks for the setlist!
Looks interesting.

But: Hasn't he been doing sets like this for at least a year?
I mean: the songs that flow into each other are the same as in London.
A few 'new' songs but nothing ground breaking from what I read?

So: yes, nice but time for something fresh?

True, for a man who has such an impressive catalog of songs (& claims to have even more unheard of cuts), he hasn't changed his setlist much.I'm glad I stayed home & watched a freaking Star Wars cartoon.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I updated the setlist in my second post on the first page (I can't believe I originally forgot to include Partyman, one of my favorites from the show). I hope I have all the songs in there now, even though I still don't have them completely in the right order--that's tough to do from memory. If anyone sees I'm still missing some songs from the show, let me know. Thanks.

thanks for the reports every1. In total I've been to 5 Prince gig (London;88, 90(twice), 92 + +07. i've never been to an after show, i'd love 2 go, 1 day hopefully, the New York shows sound like heaven. I agree with what some1s said previously; Prince's fans are like no other Artists; constantly debating/anylising everything he does.. perhaps people should lighten up a bit + not expect so much.. and if your not happy with what you see then purhaps you should go look somewhere else musically. by the way i think the Indigo c.d. is great + has some lovely moments, again this coming from some who doesnt get to many of the live gigs,or who has any live bootlegs, but i know good music/ performance when i see/hear it. thanks again for sharing your experiences.. you lucky people X

I was right in front of the stairs 1st row again. Got pushed around a lot especially when the security was diving into the crowds trying to stop fans taking pictures. Again when Shelby was picking people to dance onstage.

Totally agree with that part. lol People kind of went just a wee bit out of control, when Shelby was calling people on stage, and a few people were pushed out of their original spots.I didn't want to stand near the steps at the front of the stage, because I knew that once people saw Prince entering/exiting the stairs they would have been excited, and I wanted to avoid any squashing, pushing/shoving, since the space near the entire front of the stage from left to right, was very small.. But other than that, the show was great, and after about an hour, I had enough space for dancing and having fun in the area I stood. I thought it was cute though, when after the fans were finished dancing, Prince said "Y'all got to get off the stage now" and was laughing when he said that, but he said it in good humor.

And really the majority of these appearances/shows have come after the wb era ended. The reason i say appearances/shows, because i am counting the Today Show concerts in that total, and the "new power soul" listening party at the Spy Bar here in NYC that he held back in 1998 that i got into too, though he didnt play i met him for about 10 seconds at about 3am that morning as he was walking towards the stairs with a bodyguard and had to pass me to get to the stairs, i had my back to him, and instead of saying "excuse me" he put his hand on my back i turned around and he said "damn, dont you sleep"

so??? How did you answer the question??? I would have replied "not when you are in town" and bat my eyes at him. boxed Is that a "hooker move" or what?? lol

I just remembering being stunned that he was right there, and i have been close before at shows and instore appearances, but at this point he was in my face practically, it was crowded at that point because people started leaving, i hung around because he was still there, as were the rest of the npg and mayte at that point, so i wasnt leaving. I think i said "not tonight" to him because i remembering him laughing

nod That's the funny part, lol and the thing about it, he did some of those songs on that list at other shows. When he does an aftershow, you can't expect him to do a full version of too many songs. The variety he gives is better, even if it's the short versions. I like how he switches from one song into another, it makes the party better. I suggest if people complain about what songs Prince should play at his concerts, then they should go into their Prince catalogue, pull out the songs from those cds they want to hear, get out their earphones, chill out and listen to those songs.

When Prince does these aftershows/concerts he doesn't send out a bulletin asking fans to create a setlist and he shouldn't have to. The man has over 30 years of experience, has been all over the world, done thousands of concerts and if he wanted to right now at this stage in his career, could retire and not do any shows or invite fans period, to hear him play. There's nothing wrong with being critical about an artist's music, but why come to a thread where you didn't even attend the show to witness the vibe in the room, and criticize the setlist when you weren't even at the show?

We can all appreciate and be grateful, that Prince allows any of his fans to attend his shows. I am not a sheep when saying this and couldn't give sheep's a** if that's what any other fan thinks of me, especially seeing how not one of these fans, pay my bills anyway. Sure there's nothing wrong with criticizing an artists' music, but telling an artist what he should and should not play or how he should play it, is a bit ridiculous.

Right now at this stage, if Prince wanted to, he could just play for celebrities and private functions and keep the average fan out altogether. Then fans will really complain that he shut fans out and we'll get nothing from Prince. Prince is apparently enjoying playing real music with real musicians, instead of some manufactured, lip synching crap with no real creativity or musicianship, that doesn't come from the heart, soul or hard work, like some artists actually think is music.

Many of the covers that Prince performs comes from many genres and from artists who put their heart and soul into the music, and the variety that he plays of those covers makes one more appreciative and respectful of real music. This current generation has been exposed for the past 10 years plus, of manufactured crap, this is why now many young people in my son's generation crave for real music from artists that actually played real instruments. I respect artists like Prince who reminds us of what that real music was like. All I can say is keep playing and bring real music Prince, because there are thousands if not millions of fans who appreciate his musicianship, and grateful he still allows many of his fans to attend his events.

(By the way Efan, great thread!)

Oh, okay. I read someone else's post after I posted that comment, where they stated that he actually cursed. I guess I didn't listen to that part too clearly, but I do remember him saying he can't curse at Prince's show because he respects him. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

That's what I'm saying!

Here's a basic point that is being missed: The purpose of a concert is NOT to provide a fresh set compared to the bootlegs that are out there. Its purpose is to provide a fresh show for the people who are actually at the show, compared to other shows they've actually been to!

Comparing listening to bootlegs with actually being at a show is like comparing reading a menu with actually eating the food. And new yorkers have never had a chance to eat this food before!

But that's not because of a shortcoming on Prince's part, that's because YOU are not using the product in the way it is intended to be used.

Good point...As stated in my previous post, the obessive nature of Prince fans spoil it for themselves in the case of unrealistic criticism of the New York show...

But on the real, I hope that we can all continue to have healthy debate about all things Prince...I think there are legitimate things that Prince fans can be critical of...I cringe when I read posts on this site attacking folks for being honest about Prince...I mean, there are actually legitimate gripes with the 21 Night live CD; there are legitimate gripes with the brazen dryness of "Turn Me Loose"...

But there is also the other side of the coin, which can be seen throughout this thread...It's laughable that folks are actually complaining about after hour Prince shows...I mean, come on...lol...Prince even did what sounded like a new joint and folks disregarded that...Like I said, folks just need to check their obsessive fandom at the door...

Folks that have seen Prince's "21 Night era" gigs 20 times, just understand that you are a highly obsessive fan...You are going to complain about the way Prince holds his guitar...lol...Fall back on this one guys and let the fans who have not seen Prince 100 times enjoy dude's performance...

Well, I found Purplecam when I went to will call, and also fickyt. I went in earlier and just waited to be taken upstairs. Then when we arrived at the penthouse, I just checked out the pool area, sat down, and a guy from the UK and I was conversating for about 10 minutes. Then I went over by the door where everyone was waiting to get into the performance area. That is when my son and his friend motioned to me that Ruth was calling people who won the contest to come in at the side door before they opened the other door for the other audience members. I almonst missed out, but then again once inside, basically everyone made their way to the area of their choice. All in all the atmosphere was great and lively the whole show.

There were a lot of contest winners from various companies and people on the guest list as well from Simon & Schuster. I also met the girl who won the contest on the Perexhilton site while at the will call line. I thought that maybe all the contest winners had to wait in a separate area, but apparently that wasn't the case, and you really just had to wait among the other attendees. I was able to wait inside the hotel lobby for while before going upstairs, but shortly after that, they let everyone else up. I did like the fact though that some contest winners were able to be let in first. I also got a purple, candle lantern with the Prince symbol on both sides. I love it! Nice gift for the contest winners. I still can't get over that I actually attended that show. I had no idea I would have won a ticket to attend, and I am still so grateful that I was there.

He moved around the stage effortlessly and with great style, although nothing looked choreographed to me. There was a time when Shelby was singing (and totally tearing up the joint) and Prince was just dancing happily. I like the way he moves on stage now; it's funky, spry, and totally spontaneous-seeming.

one doesn't have 2 b somewhere 2 say they dislike a setlist. prince is capable of providing his fans with other material than the hits. and nobody is hating on anybody in that regards of "not being" there. i chose not spend that money cause i have other responsibilities. if people had fun there, than that's a good thing.

If all you want are to hear certain songs then just set your ipod and go. You obviously don't care about the 'performance' or the 'atmosphere'.

And... I thought you could have went for free and choose not to do to health reasons?

All I know is that I had a lot of friends there.... they all said it was one of the better after sets they had ever been too. And I trust there opinion over that of someone who didn't even go. I just can't figure out why are you making such an issue trying to be so negative about what was obviously a great experience for everyone who was there. Complaining about a 'set list' makes you sound bitter because you wasn't there.

"Hmmph... I didn't want to go anyway."
"I could have went if I really wanted to"

I'm happy every one had a great time... accept the tall dude who kept trying to stand in front of my GF. I think I know who it was too... grrrrr. lol

i respect prince's legacy as a artist and as a musician. i'm not bitter in any sense of the word when it comes 2 friday's per4mance. i c prince being limited 2 per4ming his material due 2 a variety of reasons and that's makes me sad. he has been a artist that has pushed the boundaries so far and needs 2 keep going in that direction imo. by continually per4ming his well known songs, whether it's 4 a charity or a main show is really sad. let him b all that he can b by per4ming songs other than the hits. ONA was the best tour in ages sans the gold experience tour that was really fun. he just xploded on that stage. constantly hearing about him doing the "80's" songs is not letting him b creative, it's retreading.

if people had a good time than that's cool i have no problems with that, my problem lies within the artist himself. period.
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I totally agree. Most artist play in boring stadiums churning out the same old hits. Prince give you the opportunity to see him in a small venue, most of the best musicians on the planet and you can party with him..almost! I think he should play whatever he feels like and we should all appreciate the show and atmosphere that we get to see.

I hope you all had a great time and I hope he keeps doing these kind of shows for as long as possible!! Katz

All in all the atmosphere was great and lively the whole show.Prince gave NYC love. It was funny because at one time, he was making the funk face like "Do you smell the funk of the music in here?" It was hilarious.

Despite this rumor about Prince having hip surgery, did he do any dance moves?

Are you kidding me? lol Prince was the one with the most energy in the entire room. He basically wore us out! Even Kathy the lady that turns the lyrics pages for him, was feeling the vibe and bopping her head and shaking her shoulders a bit, while he was performing. I was like "Go Kathy!" lol

Prince was dancing all over the stage whenever he wanted, showing us his smooth moves and smiling and having fun with us and the band members, and showing his funk face, especially when he sang a blues tune. He was toying with the audience, and even sitting back at times watching Shelby and Marva sing and he seem very relaxed and enjoying the atmosphere, and showing his own humor to us.

Even the band members loved the vibe and positive atmosphere of the audience, they were smiling the majority of the time they performed for us. Cora, his drummer got much love from us. She is awesome and so is Shelby, Marva, Morris and Josh, and the awesome Harmonica player.

The man was on superfire that night and danced when he felt like it. His positive vibe moved the audience. I've been to Vegas twice and saw 4 shows total, and was at the Butter show, and that was a great experience, because it was a very intimate crowd there, and it felt like he was in his living room partying with about 100- 125 people at a private party and having a good time, but on Friday, at the aftershow at the Gansevoort Hotel's Penthouse, his mood was so positive and fun, that he kept us all in a great mood the whole time until the wee hours of the morning. It was great and I'm glad he finally came to NYC again and allowed fans to party with him in a smaller venue.

how can a show that lasted that long b so lame with a setlist of songs he's been doing since 2004, 2006 and 2007 with no change at all?

True, for a man who has such an impressive catalog of songs (& claims to have even more unheard of cuts), he hasn't changed his setlist much.I'm glad I stayed home & watched a freaking Star Wars cartoon.

It is a jam session so you know the arrangments were changed around. I honestly think some of you are mental. No jam session with P is going to be boring.

Freddy, I understand u haven't been feeling well, but your negativity regarding Prince is getting old and annoying. You are the one that should sing a different song, or listen to the one that starts off with, "Shut up, already damn!" Stop trying to rain on our parade. We all had a great time last night. These threads are to share our experience, not to hear the hate and criticism from those that didn't or couldn't attend.

VERY WELL SAID. wink I wasn't there but reading the reviews and having the honor of witnessing a few of his after shows really brings back wonderful memories of my experience. All of u who got the chance of seeing Prince r very lucky and I’m truly glad that u guys came back with such a wonderful review with no negativity. Its funny the only ones who had something bad 2 say weren’t even there, yet they try 2 speak the loudest.
Hopefully, I will get a chance 2 b n his company like you lucky people.
Seeing Prince live is a wish that I hope comes true real soon. Witnessing Prince in a small venue is the best high one can ever experience.
Peace wink

My name is Amalia and u can start you own threads about your opinions. The threads on both sites were highjacked by you and your opinions, and I have a problem with that. That's my opinion.

Don't let the haters affect you so much. Sounds like the people that were actually there had a great time. The only ones complaining are the ones who weren't. That speaks volumes right there.
And remember, a hater's job is to hate. That's what they do. Prince has always had haters and he always will.
BTW, you are very lucky and I am very jealous. I will now be forced to hate on you. lol
