I suppose it was for a charity crowd....but it's true, the spark definitely seems to have gone.....

The spark is still very much there. You have to be there to be a part of the experience, and at this point, it surely doesn't seem like that spark is ready to burn out anytime soon, especially if you're not part of the flame that keeps the spark burning.

Hmmm was there for London.....if the real spark was there he'd have some good new songs to serenade us with .....

Still love him anyway!

I was Purplecam's guest last night. I want to than Prince.org for making that possible for us to attend. We had a great time. I will not post the songs, because others did it very well. I was in the front for both shows. The band was great. Prince looked fabulous and he was having a good time, as were we. I wish those who weren't there would stop calling it lame. Prince played 4 and a half hours worth of music for us last night. If he played unfamiliar music or new music, then the haters would be complaining about that. It sounds really petty, when people on HQ and the org, that weren't at a show are injecting negativity into such a great experience that we and the others that were there had.

I hung with Purplecam, the other lady that one the contest here, and her guest(I am too tired to go looking for their user name) Vysyons, Devoted Puppy, Rsp, Revelationsunshine, Utopia7, 2Elijah, Flicktyt (thanks for giving me the towel that Prince threw out), Lovenharmony, Largerroom, Porsche, Stephane (the lead singer from the Days of Wild), and others that I may be forgetting. Not one of them are on either site trashing what they experienced. Thanks to all for making this one of the best nights of my life. Now if only my feet and knees would stop throbbing....

Also.. a shout out to the other winners that said hi to me.... Partyman76 and Milton. I hope you both had a great time.

Hi funkteer! Did Prince not work us or what??? Awesome Aftershow. My knees, legs and feet were in pain after the show. Wish I brought my comfortable shoes with me... lol The show was fun and I loved seeing Prince and the band members smile all night and soaking up the vibe. Pay no attention to the naysayers or the haters, do like I do, I say "Hi Hater!biggrin " with a smile and keep it moving. lol

One would have to be right there to experience a live show, especially in an intimate venue. Prince could play the same song 5 times a week and each time it will sound differently. I loved the covers he played and also some of his classics. I look at it this way. If you want to hear songs Prince hasn't sung in a while, put on one of his cds and indulge yourself in the song you want to hear, that's all.

I loved all the oovers. He played Ohio players, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Doobie Brothers, Billy Cobham and just to name a few. He said he gave us "Real Music by Real Musicians" and I think that is the point of why he plays a lot of classic covers, so people won't forget what real music sounds like and sounded like back in the day, and to honor those artists' songs. Also, for the younger generation to pick up on that too. Even if Prince puts out new music, some fans are going to still criticize it if they expect too much. Not that no one can criticize his music, but there is no way any artist will please all fans. I loved when he played Billy Cobham's 'Stratus", now I want to go out and purchase the cd it's on if I could find it.

It seems to me that Prince is enjoying just playing music and appreciating the music of other artists, especially the real musicians of the past, and sharing that with his audience while schooling them at the same time about real music.

This is not the 80s Prince, it is the Prince of today. If you noticed last night, even Kathy, that turns the lyrics pages for him was bopping her head to the music he played last night.lol Everyone seemed to be having a great time.

If I want to hear a Prince song he doesn't play live in his show, I just look for the cd the song is on or get out my mp3 player with the music I downloaded from one of my Prince cds, and just listen to it. Prince will be around for a long time, and I love that he injects covers into his live performances. If you notice the crowd had no problem with him playing those songs last night, as a matter of fact, they seem to love it, were vibing to it.

Now as I just typed that, I still can't believe I was actually there. If it wasn't for the contest here at the Org, I would not have been able to go. I have to pinch myself to make sure it is still not a dream. I thank the Org again for giving me that opportunity, and thanks to Anx for putting up with all those hotel lists I posted when trying to solve the puzzle..... lol

nice story! super nice perk 4 the security guard!
i know there's nothing like live music, but sometimes i wish prince would be cool with the mainstream/music industry
i'd love 2 hear him back on radio with his new stuff...he's gotta reach the kids cuz they dunno what they're missing

And really the majority of these appearances/shows have come after the wb era ended. The reason i say appearances/shows, because i am counting the Today Show concerts in that total, and the "new power soul" listening party at the Spy Bar here in NYC that he held back in 1998 that i got into too, though he didnt play i met him for about 10 seconds at about 3am that morning as he was walking towards the stairs with a bodyguard and had to pass me to get to the stairs, i had my back to him, and instead of saying "excuse me" he put his hand on my back i turned around and he said "damn, dont you sleep"

i think u r allowed 2 count the today show/listening parties etc in the grand total of 75 gigs!
that has 2 be a prince fan record, surely?
i've seen him once lol
thanks 4 sharing 'damn don't u sleep' story! crikey, you're part of the scenery!
u must have seen him in london then?

no actually i havent gone outside nyc too often, a few shows in new jersey, a few in phillie and conneticut south carolina and 1 trip to minnie for the last celebration held. Its really strange now because i get recognized on occasion by fans that have seen me at other shows.

I agree nod definitely one of the more smaller more intimate shows he's done here, it was a night to remember! loved how he took time out to give some handshakes and hi fives before calling it a night. THANKS TO PRINCE AND THE WHOLE GANG FOR A FABOLOUS NIGHT AND PRETTY COOL GIFT BAG!

What was in the gift bag? They were all gone by the time I left. But I got one of the wax symbol ornaments, so I'm happy with that.

me too, did you get the large like 8x5 one that changes color? I got the big one! lol

gift bag has a large mini preview version of 21 night book its about 6 pages of photos, Versace crystal candle holder, VIP H&M purchase card , 21 nights promo cards that were on display, Saint Berry Lip stick and the latest Essence with Beyonce on the cover

Just to add to what 2elijah said, we were both right by Kathy who puts the lyrics up for him. There were literally two big boxes full of pages of lyrics, I mean big boxes like the kind you store stuff in. So I am sure he has many many more songs he could play if he were to choose that he wanted to, but it seems he is comfortable playing these songs at this point in his career. You could see that he changed the set list quite a few times, especially in the second show because she would have one song on the stand and then have to change it. In fact, one time I felt bad for her, he decided to do Purple Rain, I guess out of order, and it took her a minute to find the lyric sheets. She finally did (although I am sure he knows the words).

In addition, I am sure that we would all be complaining if he really did keep his word and decide never to play his hits again. Songs like Purple Rain and Let's go Crazy are kind of like a spouse, you take her for granted, but when she goes away for more than a few days, you miss her.

I'm curious, did he sound serious, like he meant it, when he asked if anyone wanted to interview him, or did he sound like he was joking?

Just woke up still a little tired. Only see one forgotten song ...the show started great with:

Crimson & Clover followed by
LET's GO ! (Cover of the CARS tune) Great combination.

Also don't forget MUSICOLOGY!!!!!.

Between both shows....5 hours of Pure FUNK.

One funny note..during the first show, Prince walked briefly into the crowd and
asked if anyone wanted to interview him. I quickly replied "Who's Fluffy?"
He immediately started to laugh and then went back on stage and repeated the question to Josh Dunham who also started to laugh. This is proof positive that Prince is in tune with what goes on on these boards. So when you read this Fluffy.....thank you for a great experience and 21 nights in NYC sounds great!

I was blessed to be able to attend the aftershow. I had an AMAZING time! That was one of my top five Prince experiences ever! Starting off with standing in line with my best pals and laughing our a**'s off all evening, to being right in front for the whole show and watching Prince doing what he does best. He was in such a great mood and he gave us everything he had. I love seeing him have a good time on stage! Many thanks to Prince and the band for a very memorable evening (well, technically morning!) cool

Ooh, sounds like there were cool goodies in the bag. I also got the smaller wax holder, not the large one. And I didn't know that contest winners got to go in first either! So I guess I missed out on a lot. But I truly couldn't care less. There was no bad place to be in that hall last night, and I'm so grateful that I got to step foot inside at all. I had such a good time that any of the other stuff couldn't possibly make me any happier than I am right now.

Yes, but you are on this thread seeking information on what songs Prince played at the aftershow on Friday night. So apparently the spark in the musician is still there or you would not have any interest or use your time to be on this thread seeking information on what songs he performed Friday night.

The Prince you see on stage is the Prince of today, not the Prince of 1980, so playing some of his classics mixed in with covers and occasional new songs, (the latter depending on whether he is promoting a new album) makes it a better variety. and more exciting because you never know what he is going to sing and play next, like rock, jazz, r&b or a blues cut. Prince sang and played a variety of all 4 last night.

LOL...Yeah, I was there for both shows...Prince basically just tore down that stage...This is a 50 year old man, yall...His guitar was talking to folks...lol...Insane guitar display...Zone like playing...And he had an harmonica player come on for a few songs...His current band was the tighest I've ever heard it: just a drummer, a bassist and a keyboard player...Very stripped down...

BUT: The second show was one of the best Prince gigs he's ever done...One white affluent cat turned to me and said "I think I just saw something historical..."

Hell, his first show was 2 and a half hours...and the second was 3!!!!.....He had those rich people going nuts, jumping up and down...

Girl & Boys, U Got The Look, Controversy, Purple Rain, Sexy Dancer, &, Purple Rain, Cream, Alphabet Street, Shhh, 3121, Musicology, 1999....And then there was the covers...

The Cars' "Let's Go"
Crimson and Clover
EWF's "Can't Hide Love
The Stones' Honky Tonk Woman and Miss U
Ohio Players' I Want To Free (Prince: "Sugerfoot messed me up back in the day...his Afro was and it leaned to the side! How could u compete with that?!"....lol)
Stratus
a little Chaka
Jimi's Red House (not Purple as he usually does...)

And then he had the nerve to do some Time and Sheila E songs...He busted out Jungle Love, The Bird, Love Bizarre, and The Glamorous Life....Just insane...

Prince: "You guys really don't want me up here!...I can be on this stage all night!...I keep telling yall I got too many hits!!!"

Man, I don't know what to say after this one...

the performances were awesome but i wouldn't say it was one of the best gigs he's ever done. of course now, it's all a matter of personal opinion. i enjoyed the encore much more than the the main part of the aftershow. it was so tight, i think something snapped.

i must admit i loved the setlist! it was a good mix of covers and his stuff. i think if he had done songs like Kiss, LGC, LRC, and NC2U, i probably would have been slightly disappointed but i'm sure i would have still had lots of fun. I mean, he played Sexy Dancer! how awesome was that?
not to take this discussion elsewhere, but i read something on here that it was a great display of his understanding of black music heritage and yes i agree with that. but he also embraced white rock as well. i mean, The Cars? awesome.

and speaking of covers, i found it interesting that he's doing A LOT of covers. i wonder why he's chosen to do so many covers and especially ones like Crimson and Clover and Let's Go (the Cars)

But: Hasn't he been doing sets like this for at least a year?
I mean: the songs that flow into each other are the same as in London.

Don't let the haters affect you so much. Sounds like the people that were actually there had a great time. The only ones complaining are the ones who weren't. That speaks volumes right there.
And remember, a hater's job is to hate. That's what they do. Prince has always had haters and he always will.
BTW, you are very lucky and I am very jealous. I will now be forced to hate on you. lol

one doesn't have 2 b somewhere 2 say they dislike a setlist. prince is capable of providing his fans with other material than the hits. and nobody is hating on anybody in that regards of "not being" there. i chose not spend that money cause i have other responsibilities. if people had fun there, than that's a good thing.

Actually the first show was barely over 90 minutes and the second show was just shy of 3 Hours!

The first set was saved by the opening song - which seems 2 be Brand New?
possibly called "Download" or Down low"

The second show was among the BEST eye have ever seen. A lot of people complain about covers at a Prince show - at an aftershow eye have NO PROBLEM because this is Prince playing what he wants. He was Happy and in an amazing mood. It was worth it 4 the Dave Chappelle comedy break ALONE.

A detailed Setlist will follow 4 those interested
thanx 2 Prince and his staff and the staff at the Hotel - it was ONE (of 21)
AMAZING nights

one doesn't have 2 b somewhere 2 say they dislike a setlist. prince is capable of providing his fans with other material than the hits. and nobody is hating on anybody in that regards of "not being" there. i chose not spend that money cause i have other responsibilities. if people had fun there, than that's a good thing.

If all you want are to hear certain songs then just set your ipod and go. You obviously don't care about the 'performance' or the 'atmosphere'.

And... I thought you could have went for free and choose not to do to health reasons?

All I know is that I had a lot of friends there.... they all said it was one of the better after sets they had ever been too. And I trust there opinion over that of someone who didn't even go. I just can't figure out why are you making such an issue trying to be so negative about what was obviously a great experience for everyone who was there. Complaining about a 'set list' makes you sound bitter because you wasn't there.

"Hmmph... I didn't want to go anyway."
"I could have went if I really wanted to"

I'm happy every one had a great time... accept the tall dude who kept trying to stand in front of my GF. I think I know who it was too... grrrrr. lol

Thanks for the setlist!
Looks interesting.

But: Hasn't he been doing sets like this for at least a year?
I mean: the songs that flow into each other are the same as in London.
A few 'new' songs but nothing ground breaking from what I read?

So: yes, nice but time for something fresh?

In the case of an after hours show, not really...

First let me start off by saying that I think that what makes the Org so cool is a lot of folks refuse to play the role of sheep...They speak their mind about Prince; On the real, I find it refreshing that we can call out Prince for his asshole tendencies or give a thumbs down to certain albums such as the 21 Nights aftershow CD, which is indeed weaksauce...There were better shows he could have used for that live CD...A LOT better...

But I think peeps need to chill with all the Monday morning quarterback stuff with the New York show...

The main problem with some of the posts in this thread is most of the folks that are shitting on the show were not there...Even for the fans that saw Prince in action at the 21 Nights gigs have to understand in certain cases a gig takes on a different feel and different arrangements even when it seems like Prince is doing the same setlist (which in the case of the New York show, it was not exactly the same show...He even did what sounded like a new song at the beginning of the first set...)

Furthermore, the highly obsessive nature of Prince fans on this board works as a huge roadblock...I mean lets be honest folks...Who memorizes the setlist of Aftershows?...What other fanbase judges an act by the songs they do in a private party?...Do you see Bruce Springsteen fans saying dude does the same ol after hour setlist?...Or complain that he may do some covers like "Mustang Sally' or some Woody Guthrie? No...Because they understand that after hour shows represnts the artists' chance to cut loose; to have fun; to jam...Nothing more, nothing less...

Again, we can all have our opinion...But just try to realize that it may be based off of some weird fascination with memorizing afterparty setlist that were performed overseas for the most part...A lot of folks that attended those two New York shows had no idea that Prince did "Crimson & Clover" or did the Cars' "Let's Go" at a London nightspot..(I myself have been to a few Prince gigs over the years and have never seen him perform Jungle Love...Or EWF's "Can't Hide Love"...That was new for me and others witnessing those gigs)

All this to say is try to dial down the fandom and just use a little common sense folks...It's not that serious...Put yourself in the shoes of folks that are not obsessive Prince fans...

Let's save the criticism of Prince shows when warranted...

Yeah...u guys really had to be there...That shit was a party, not a concert...There was nothing to complain about...and trust me, I've been very vocal about some of the lackluster shows Prince has done...But this shit was just crushing...Especially the second show....Insane guitar....

Big hello to Chelsea Rodgers! she is so gorgeous and very sweet! loved the CR earrings!!

Hi-5 from Prince was awesome. Whoever said Prince hates his fans eat your heart out.

I was right in front of the stairs 1st row again. Got pushed around a lot especially when the security was diving into the crowds trying to stop fans taking pictures. Again when Shelby was picking people to dance onstage.

I have nothing to complain about, I would do it all over again. Simply amazing.
I also got a souvenir. (Guitar pick)

Sounds amazing, glad you all had a great time. I am from London and we were very lucky last year with the aftershows so its great to see Prince is out there enjoying it and doing it again - somewhere else!! Wish I could have gone though!!
