Prince and no eye contact, I have had this with him twice. Both times speaking with him face to face. But then there wasn't a crowd around, just his guards.

Everytime you pay for a concert ticket to see Prince, you have hired him to entertain you. NO? Yes, I think so.

Wow....a musician getting paid to perform his music..What a shocking concept! Its not like he was hired to juggle monkey's nuts.....

when I was at Ani Difranco's poetry reading earlier this year, she was talking about how artists need to be paid just like everyone else, and a large amount of our society has yet to recognize the arts as REAL WORK that needs and deserves compensation.

I think the difference is that true artists have to find a way to make their art and make money, while staying as true to themselves as possible. Starting an independent label? Cool. Writing SLAVE on your face? Why not?! Giving away your CDs with Concert Tickets? Brilliant.
But whoring yourself out and exploiting your own music for as a clown for some bajillionares birthday party is a little strange for him. not that it's necessarily WRONG.
It's just that Prince has always been so innovative and dignified, it's kinda like a bad joke. confused

Now add that to the LA parties, the $3121.00 Roosevelt gig, the Vegas shows, the 21 London shows, those other Prince for Hire parties he's done recently, the demanding that fansites compensate him for having his pictures on them and you've got someone who never had to do any of that to get rich as hell, seemingly in desperate need of money. There is something very wrong with that.

Well he did do a private charity gig for uber rich folks. I think it was for Clinton and Madonnas foundation while he was in the UK. If I was filthy rich I'd try and hire him as well, wouldn't it blow your mind to have him playing at your birthday? I wonder if he sang Happy Birthday, I thought JWs don't celebrate them.

Ok, so now we've officially seen it all. And heard it all, thanks to Jeffrey Soffer, heir to the Turnberry throne, who threw himself a 40th birthday spectacular (to the tune of $2 million, we hear) in the Turnberry Aviation hangar last night at the Opa Locka Executive Airport. Besides the elaborate open bars, constant flowing Veuve Cliquot, and gourmet food served in that inimitable, over the top Karla Dascal way, Soffer hired Prince--the Prince, his purple highness, to perform a private concert for a few hundred of his closest friends. But it wasn't just a quick sampling of Prince's greatest hits, either. It was a fan-*ucking-tastic full blown concert (he sang Cream, Purple Rain, 1999, U Got the Look, Controversy, Let's Go Crazy, I Feel For You, Nothing Compares 2 U, and several others), featuring marvelous backup singers, dancing twins, brass band, and a legend who seemed to be in his element, happy to perform for such an intimate crowd. He also spoke to and made eye contact with the crowd--a rarity, saying that even though we should all have a good time, there is still a war going on out there. At one point, Prince invited dazed and dazzled audience members to join him on stage for a group dance. Spotted plotzing in the crowd with the rest of us: DJ Tracy Young, movie director Brett Ratner, who told us that he was working on his next flick--the story of Playboy titan Hugh Hefner, Ingrid Casares with A-Rod, Rony Seikaly, Jorge Perez, and Soffer family friends James Caan and George Hamilton, who joined the elder Soffer, Donald, on stage to wish Jeffrey a fab 40. There was no need to wish such a thing. It was beyond fab, and at least for one night, 40 was the new 20 and 30.

And PS: We showed up late. Soffer also had K.C. and The Sunshine Band as Prince's opening act.

http://blogs.herald.com/s...e_tropics/

It seems he's been doing a lot of these gigs .... since moneypennypa got ARK (http://www.arkonline.org) involved with him to do their charity event this past may, 07. hmmmm...just giving credit were due. http://www.moneypennypaliaison.com.

its the hypocrisy...for a man to run away from his CONtract because he wanted his artistic freedom it just comes off odd that he is playing for the ultra wealthy who really don't give a damn who is performing...

in other words, he is whoring himself out to the highest bidder.

kinda sad when you think about it.

Call me crazy but here's the thing:

It's not that serious.

It's his choice and his career. So what if he wants to do someone's birthday party? It's not like he burned someone's house down with the kids in it. It's just Prince doing what he does. It's his job and he's doing it, regardless as to whether or not you are down with how he's doing his job. PERIOD.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

It is called making a living doing something you love and lot's of performers are doing it.

I think Prince has always been in it for the money and I do not why this is so shocking. You should be upset that you could not go to the show not about how much money P is making.

There's not a damn thing in my post that says I'm "upset about how much money Prince is making."

I'm upset because he's gone from a phenomenal musical genius to what equates as a peddling musical whore in just the last 4 years of a fabulously illustrious career and only a few seem to be able to see that for what it is...ODD AS HELL!

A lot of performers are doing drugs, beating the shit out of women and abusing little kids too, let's just hope he doesn't start doing that as well! rolleyes

Wow. Prince is now officially simply a cartoon of his prior self, making all the $$$ he can off it. Yea, more power to him blah blah blah

perhaps he is going to channel some of his £sss earned from these gigs to his charities e.g. in Vietnam from which I have just returned and which needs loads more help especially in education -
"C'mon y'all - let me hear you sing, c'mon y'all, shake, c'mon y'all, jump" - Yes Prince -
"London do you feel for me what I feel for you"- yes Prince -
"Can I play my guitar now?" - yes please

eek You ARE kidding right? The show was incredible after that - the whole thing, The Beautiful Ones? The screaming?!! If I was your Girlfriend, Black Sweat, Sign O the Times, When Doves Cry, Sometimes it Snows in April, Controversy, Nothing Compares to U, and on and on and on..... Are you MAD? I was in Row B, section 110, practically on the stage - and don't even get me started on the aftershow lol

could it be possible that one can be wealthy and into prince's music? why does one automatically cancel out the other? anyway, any musician that is somewhat successful at making a living from it has to be a hustler at heart.

It's been his job for damn near 30 years! Until about 4 years ago, there wasn't enough money in the world to get Prince Rogers Nelson to be a damn party favor! Whether the folks camped out on that isle called denial, care to believe it or not...SOMETHING IS AMISS!

Shawn Mullins "Twin Rocks Oregon" Lyrics

I met him on the cliffs
of twin rocks oregon
he was sittin on his bedroll
lookin just like richard brautigan
I thought he was an old man
he wasn't but 37
he said he'd been ridin trains
for 15 years
drawin portraits
to keep his belly full of beer
and it looked to me like he'd died
and missed the plane to heaven

but he was a nice ol' guy
for a younger man
he had a bottle of mad dog
he held in his hand
that he waved around a lot
to make his point
and I listened as he told his tales
of wine and women and county jails
and we finished off that bottle
and smoked a half a joint

he said "I came here to watch the sun
disappear into the ocean
it's been years
since I smelled this salty sea"

he turned his bottle up and down
and I saw him lost
and I saw him found
he said "I don't know
what i've been lookin for, maybe me..."

Well, I told him I too had been
travelin around livin out of my van
from town to town playin for tips
and whatever records I could move

I said "I don't reckon i'll be
makin it big,
you know it's hard to get rich
off a tour of coffee house gigs"

and he said "yeah, but ain't it a blessin
to do what you wanna do..."

and I told him "yeah, I pulled off here
to watch the sun disappear into the ocean
`cause it's been years
since I smelled this salty sea"

and he turned his bottle up and down
he saw me lost and he saw me found
and I said
"I don't know what I've been looking for, maybe me"

I said "it's getting kind of late
better be heading down the interstate
can I give you a lift
to san francisco bay?"
he said "nope, I think I'm just
going to sit here and rest
and maybe wait on the
tokyo-montana express
I might just lay here
and dream my life away
i'm going to sit right here,
i'm going to watch the sun
disappear into the ocean
`cause it's been years, it's been years
i'm gonna turn my bottle up and down
you can see my lost
and you can see my found"

I met him on the cliffs
of twin rocks, oregon
he was sitting on his bedroll
looking just like richard brautigan
just like him
